My big problem with all the structured gaming groups is that it incentivizes you to optimize your character for combat and due to the usual 4 hour window to complete an adventure and there is minimal role playing. It is great if you can't get in a normal group or if you use the structure but not the natural limitations of the format!
I love it how at the end when the guests are DM ing it out how Satine sits there and waits with anticipation to hear the story; and she partially covers her face too like "OMGoddnes." I love it. I'm going to start watching more just because of that.
I'm enjoying the new format that Satine is bringing and the discussion with other DMs out there. As a relatively new DM, I already knew a lot of Matt's tips by watching him and other D&D sessions. However, Satine's coverage is less bullet point and more in depth reflection. I always wondered a bit about Adventure League, what it was, how it was played, etc., and stayed away thinking it to be largely different than regular homebrewed D&D...but after watching this, I might see if local game community has an open spot for one. Thanks to both G&S and Satine for the great tips!
During my binge at 10PM in between a Gov Essay and sketching out character designs, seeing Satine Phoenix's giddy expression when the guest is DMing the outro makes me smile.
Pathfinder has an amazing organized play campaign called Pathfinder Society. It is now in its 9th season, with hundreds of available adventures. When they do their special events at Gen Con there are over 1,200 people playing the same adventure simultaneously. Pathfinder Society GMs are not encouraged to run cold, but usually put hours of prep into each adventure.
I came back into D&D with Adventurers League at my local game store. Now I play with most of the same guys every week, about every other week one of the guys runs his game, the opposite week I run my own game. There was not an Adventurers League in Tulsa until our GM had to move there for work, she organized her own and within a couple months they were out of tables. I participated in the epic at Soonercon last year, IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!!!
I really like this new style for the videos! Love hearing from different GMs and getting their perspectives :) And Satine's "GM us out" ending is awesome!
These are really fun to watch, and the longer interview-format leaves room for more interesting content. I can't wait to see and hear more from Satine (and her guests) about actual in-game GM tips. 13+ minutes should be enough time to have a nice discussion and get a couple of opinions and insights about a certain aspect of GM-ing. Maybe even on topics that Matt has covered before - I'm sure there are things that can be elaborated on further (especially in this longer format). Plus, getting a new perspective is always refreshing and, surely, helpful. (I hope this doesn't sound as anything else but the attempt at constructive criticism it is intended to be.)

I love it. I may be a little biased because I enjoy D&D more, but I enjoy such new and informative input from more than one face. Sure the context is AL-heavy, but if you can't take valuable info from one source and incorporate it into another, then it isn't the source you should get upset about. Just learn more. This is fine in general, but I don't think it should be called a GM Tip. There is no GM Tip here. It seems like just a long advert for "A.L." and an interview. As a GM, I learned about a knot. :)
I like these discussions. Sometimes, a list of bullet points doesn't really help, so having moments like this have encouraged me to think about things in an overall way. It's a bit more like the conversations I'd like to have about D&D, as opposed to short lectures. Very much looking forward to the next episode.

The first video on GM Styles was interesting and informative but this one was strictly about AL. It's not bad but not really GM Tips imo. More like "wanna play D&D? Here's how." Great for beginners and maybe a way of honing your DM skills but not really GM tips. Something I will always look forward to is creating engaging puzzles or something. A video on that would be sick! That said, the video wasn't bad, just not a video I would recommend to watch for new and aspiring DMs. The small descriptions at the end are neat though. I really dig them!
My thought every time i see the people involved into the community discussing about "roleplaying" but only covering D&D. I suspect Wizards of the Coast are involved in this by rewarding people speaking about it. Which isn't bad in itself, but counter-productive when wanting to grow the community (i know quite a few people not into medieval fantasy for instance)
I've always seen it as DnD is one of the largest systems and is therefore the easiest way to introduce someone to it. After you establish the community, it will branch out. But building the base has to be done first.
I agree. D&D is popular, easy to learn the basic rules and a great starting point. Other systems like M&M are really complicated but rewarding after the long haul .
You know what it could be really cool to hear Satine talk about? Mixed alignment parties. Having Evil and Good aligned characters together and roleplaying what it comes with such a diverse party: Conflict, fights and even combat. I myself love mixed parties. But would like to hear Satine thoughts of how to deal when the players start bickering among themselves because of the opposed alignment characters.
I am starting to despise the mention of Adventurers League as a great way to start. I do not dislike the League itself (the premise is great), but since it is not established everywhere, it is really discouraging for somebody from (just a random example^^) Germany to hear all the time how easy it is to play by just going to one of those games while there are no such games in your proximity.
I can't completely wrap my head around the concept of the Adventure League, i get it from an organizing logistical point of view, it's a great way to beginners to enter the D&D world but i cannot concieve why an experienced player would partecipate in a standardized adventure that everyone is playing, it sucks a bit the magic out of it.
I agree entirely. I never understood what it was supposed to be. This episode helped but now it seems to as you said "suck a bit of the magic out of it"

@TheComicBookAddict while playing on consistent schedule and steady stream of new friends is awesome. D&D is a game of imagination. And from what I can tell AL takes some of the story away from both the players and the DM. Now, some DMs prefer modules and premade campaigns but if a new DM doesn't have friends that are interested but doesn't want to run a module were only this happens and only this race/class would be a major turn-off to the system and community as whole. He can't express his imagination in that way. He'd be better off playing Pathfinder online.
Patrick Milner to me that makes zero sense because the whole time it's existed and never once has it felt magical maybe you just get really bad dungeon Masters. open dungeon mastered all of storm King's Thunder all of my players literally came every week to play because they just needed to know what was going to happen
Much prefer this set-up, felt like Mercer was struggling to keep it fresh (not a criticism), but the addition of guests solves that problem beautifully imo. Ruty and Satine's Maze Arcana has a really tight yet open community, would love to see them both talk about their experiences building that :)
I love Matt Mercer and his GM Tips, but Satine has already started to win me over on her format. The special guest makes every episode have a unique flair, the longer time frame allows a deeper discussion about topics, and the set and setup make you feel like you are having a personal conversation with Satine and her guest, rather than Matt's large table which made you feel like he was addressing a classroom.
I'll admit, I miss Matthew Mercer, we all probably do. And his obviously superior voice acting definitely was a great way of selling characters in his hypotheticals! No offense Satine, I still absolutely love you to death! Anyways, I think this might be better because of one main reason: Guests. While Satine could be a fountain of wealth for DnD, it's a really great idea to learn about a topic from different standpoints. So I'm still excited.

Ok, two points 1) I think the episode was miss named as it less about community and more about how to go about finding/building a group or culture. It maybe how I look at community. Over time it has changed (community) and now as I believe Mr. Mercer said "The Geeks and Nerds have won and have now taken over the world. Ha Ha Ha!" Evil laugh only Matt can do! The games/groups are part of he community but far from all! The games take place within the community but are not 'the community!' A good example is Critical Role - the game takes place but the community are the viewers not the player & DM. 2) The sign outs are great! This one was even better then the last. I have know idea how you do it but if each show builds on the last the DM being interviewed will be turning into some scary monster and even more will carry Ms. Phoenix (?) away! Talking about being blown away! Sometimes I feel really bummed to live in Ontario, Canada (then I think of your President and I am happy again)! Your all welcome here for a visit if you would like!

Roll20 is great, but I prefer Fantasy Grounds for Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG. Then way I have it set up makes my life much easier as a GM and I've never quite managed to replicate it in Roll 20... I won't go into too much detail right now otherwise this'll be a text wall but there are advantages and disadvantages to both platforms.
I have a game group, but decided to check out Meetup.com anyhow, just to see what's in the area. On the front page it listed a geek-tastic bar that I never would have found otherwise. Definitely check out that site if you are having trouble connecting in your area.
"You'll never be too weak and too strong" I honestly think it's one of the biggest issues with AL. It stops the players from having really ridiculous characters to have fun stories with. One of my favorite examples was a very intelligent wizard who had like 4 or 5 DEX and thus had horrible asthma and couldn't run for shit. He was horribly weak but he was so fun to play with. Don't you guys agree that over/underpowered characters can sometimes be really fun for the whole group?
I was worried (no Matt?). However, I've discovered I love Satine just as much as Matt. Hopefully we can get some solid Satine episodes (no guests). Either way, gotta love this series!

I feel like this reboot series is more of a "Story time with a point" rather than the "Here's an issue, here are different ways to fix it" that it was. It's not bad, just... A bit jarring with such a drastic shift in point-getting-across paradigm :P
In terms of the comments about the semantics behind the title, I think the current title is still viable; instead of being "tips for GMs", it's now "tips and advice from a GM"
This should be labeled as a new series if she's just going to have a long discussion about stuff that's not really related to DMing. Mercer's tips were clear and concise, but this is a completely different approach.
I actually met a guy from Ireland using Roll20. He wanted to learn about the new Star Wars, I needed more experience as a GM and also the use of Roll20. He ran all 4 characters (ppl and time zones), But he did just like the Ruty moment. Used all other skills to achieve the goal other than combat. All my gaming experience up to then was all about combat. As for Meetup - it would be up to me to try and create sessions that are NOT DnD. Same for Roll20. I am in 5 groups but the only RP events happening every week are DND. And oddly, most of the time are being held M- F in the evening and I work second shift so..I am in a Google+ group that plays the Super Hero RPG I like but they play on Wednesdays - so unless I have off or call in sick. There is a bar however that once a month does Adventures Guild. Any RPG can be organized. It would be an hour drive to attend. Local or closer meetups are based on Boardgames or Cards, Dice or Trivia. So for the time being, I am that person who has RPG books that just sit on shelves :)
I like the interviews, but really liked the previous format with actual advice and tips and whatnot. Everyone has their own flavor however, so I'll most likely watch the next episode. The interview was cool, but I also play Hackmaster, so outside of a Fantasy setting there isn't too much of a comparison.
In the video they talk about an "Epic" style of D&D with 40 to 50 tables all playing in the same world but when I looked into seeing game play of this overlapping campaign I found nothing. can any one help ?
... This really wasn't about community-building, or even community, just AL. I mean, some of us don't want AL, you realize, right? You've got prospective newbie GMs tuning in how to build a community for their gaming group, or even find them for their home games, and it's a 13 minute ad for Adventures League. Not against them, and a nod to would've been cool, but this went SO FAR BEYOND THAT.
Unfortunately I live in a part of Virginia where the social interest is mostly about fishing and hunting and trucking. Almost no interest in gaming. The closest game store is in a neighboring town and it is very grungy and dirty. There is always online services but theres nothing like meeting with other nerds across a table and playing.
I agree with the other comments. Something feels off about this set up. Hearing about different GM experiences is fun...but it needs to be separate from the tips. Maybe a recap at the end of the episode of all the tips they have to offer?
I have an appreciation for organized play because of how good it is for promoting games. I just can't get into them anymore. They just feel sterile in comparison to a GM who has the freedom to tell the story they want.

Great vid, I just moved to Portland and I use meetup for book clubs. I saw an AL group in the gaming section and had no clue what it was about.
I'm familiar with the Pathfinder equivalent of AL but I didn't know DnD had one too. I'll have to see if I can find one in my town.

Why use fantasy grounds when you can use roll20 for free?

I feel like this reboot series is more of a "Story time with a point" rather than the "Here's an issue, here are different ways to fix it" that it was. It's not bad, just... A bit jarring with such a drastic shift in point-getting-across paradigm :P

In terms of the comments about the semantics behind the title, I think the current title is still viable; instead of being "tips for GMs", it's now "tips and advice from a GM"
This should be labeled as a new series if she's just going to have a long discussion about stuff that's not really related to DMing. Mercer's tips were clear and concise, but this is a completely different approach.
I actually met a guy from Ireland using Roll20. He wanted to learn about the new Star Wars, I needed more experience as a GM and also the use of Roll20. He ran all 4 characters (ppl and time zones), But he did just like the Ruty moment. Used all other skills to achieve the goal other than combat. All my gaming experience up to then was all about combat. As for Meetup - it would be up to me to try and create sessions that are NOT DnD. Same for Roll20. I am in 5 groups but the only RP events happening every week are DND. And oddly, most of the time are being held M- F in the evening and I work second shift so..I am in a Google+ group that plays the Super Hero RPG I like but they play on Wednesdays - so unless I have off or call in sick. There is a bar however that once a month does Adventures Guild. Any RPG can be organized. It would be an hour drive to attend. Local or closer meetups are based on Boardgames or Cards, Dice or Trivia. So for the time being, I am that person who has RPG books that just sit on shelves :)
I have enjoyed this and the previous one with Ivan :) They are good introductory topics for players and GMs, so perhaps it could be subtitled :)

I like the interviews, but really liked the previous format with actual advice and tips and whatnot.
Everyone has their own flavor however, so I'll most likely watch the next episode. The interview was cool, but I also play Hackmaster, so outside of a Fantasy setting there isn't too much of a comparison.

I host games in a smaller community, I would love some episodes on meta gaming and world building.
In the video they talk about an "Epic" style of D&D with 40 to 50 tables all playing in the same world but when I looked into seeing game play of this overlapping campaign I found nothing. can any one help ?
... This really wasn't about community-building, or even community, just AL. I mean, some of us don't want AL, you realize, right? You've got prospective newbie GMs tuning in how to build a community for their gaming group, or even find them for their home games, and it's a 13 minute ad for Adventures League. Not against them, and a nod to would've been cool, but this went SO FAR BEYOND THAT.
Unfortunately I live in a part of Virginia where the social interest is mostly about fishing and hunting and trucking. Almost no interest in gaming. The closest game store is in a neighboring town and it is very grungy and dirty. There is always online services but theres nothing like meeting with other nerds across a table and playing.

I agree with the other comments. Something feels off about this set up. Hearing about different GM experiences is fun...but it needs to be separate from the tips. Maybe a recap at the end of the episode of all the tips they have to offer?

I have an appreciation for organized play because of how good it is for promoting games. I just can't get into them anymore. They just feel sterile in comparison to a GM who has the freedom to tell the story they want.
