  • By June 6th 1944, the Allies had landed 150,000 men in Normandy. The five beaches were secure and the troops were pushing inland.
    The Allies had gained air and sea superiority, however the landing forces were not as strong as they could have been due to limited landing craft and paratroop aircraft.

      Canadians were a great help, but you can’t put one country above another. The entire war effort was won because everyone came together to fight against evil and to liberate a suffering world.
      As for D-Day, you are correct in that the Canadians did a bang up job on Juno Beach, but as far as pushing so far inland they were ordered to stop is a myth. All allied forces went through the town of Carentan before pushing further inland, this town was taken by the 101st Airborne division. Everything after that was pretty even, the reason the war ended fairly quick after we (the allied forces) landed was because we were hitting hard on the western front and the Eastern Front was being obliterated by the Red Army (Russia)
      At the end of the day we won because it was an allied effort, everyone shared the load and contributed what they could, you can say the yanks should have done more because they had their largest population and the most man power but they were also fighting a war on two fronts, the European theater and the Pacific.

      As a Canadian, it's often seen the other way around. "[Y]ou can't put one country above another." Not trying to start anything, but that's rich. America is constantly the main focus of any videos involving anything (not just history/not just on this channel). Canada was barely mentioned except for a select 3-4 times.

    You forgot about the amphibious tanks designed by the Americans for D-Day. The invasion was supposed to happen earlier, however high waves meant the tanks couldn't be used, so they put it off. On D-day they just decided to go for it. Only 1 of over 50 tanks made it to the beach.

    • @jake5958
      @jake5958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      DD tanks were designed by the British, 4 of the beaches took relatively low DD casualty's but Omaha was the worst. The 741st Tank Battalion put 29 DDs into the sea, but 27 of these sank, the remaining two made the long swim to the beach. High seas and releasing them to far off shore was probably the contributing factor for losing so many.

    What the Canadian forces did during d-day, was send the troops out in sealed barges called kasons. These were floated to Juno beach where they then had the concrete walls blown off, and huge stakes plunged into the water, essentially creating miniature docks. These made the deployment of troops much faster, and some of these kasons remain to this day due to how well and sturdy they were built.
