I've seen her star struck before. She comes prepared. Nobody's looking for a polished interview. We're all big fans and the candid vibe delivers in good form. I'm out.
The first time I saw Stu with Satriani back in the day, when Joe introduced Stu, the crowd went "Stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" and it sounded like they were booing him. Then Joe said "They Stu him because they love him" and I got it, haha. Then I heard his solo and realized he's on another level. Awesome bassist.
I've been aware of Stu, but never looked into him. I watched this to kill time and I got sucked in. He was so generous with his knowledge and eager to share stories. Julia was wonderful as well, very excited and engaged. She wasn't just reading questions, but rather having a conversation
"I played piano for years and years" at 3:49 well that explains his depth of knowledge. His videos for TrueFire made me a better bassist, got me to know the modes and underlined the fundamentals. This was a casual, cool and excellent interview. Very in-depth. Thanks to all involved.
Stu Hamm is as much a teacher of all things on electric bass, as he is a master of all things electric bass. My first, true inspiration to play bass, some 30+ years ago. Many thanks Stu, for the lessons and all the advice..
Great interview! i learned a lot, thanks. I first heard Stu at festival hall in Melbourne Australia. He was a support act for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Wow, Id never heard a bass played like a banjo. Never ever forgot that.
Stu was a HUGE influence on my playing. Stu played in Charlotte NC 2 years ago so I had to see him. I took my daughter so she could witness Stu's talent. He didn't disappoint. Thanks for the interview!!!!
Stu's the reason I play bass: 20 years ago couple friends in high school were fans of Satriani. They played his 2000 Live in San Francisco DVD to convince me of how cool and amazing he was. Stu's solo stole the show. I bought a bass a couple weeks later and the rest was (my) history.
Most people do not understand how much a bassist can influence the music. Passion and warfare would be a radically different album without Stu involved. I saw him a few times with Satch, he practically stole the show. he would be my go to guy on the front line.
I saw Stu In Finland Pori with Satriani 1998. He played himself bass solo. I remember Bonanza theme and country stuff? Maybe little Beethoven. 22 years ago hard to remember all. Amazing bass player and nice humble man.
I saw Stu in NYC in the 1990's at a Bass Day show . Incredible musician . I wish they would alternate east and west coasts with that show . They did several in NYC and then stayed in California .
Hi, Julia. Would you consider not only "interviewing" your guests. But also having them "plug in" and play a little something for us? Also, since you have Stu Hamm on here, I was wondering if you could invite Brian Bromberg on. I absolutely LOVE his music and his musicianship!!!!
Stu is the man! Iconic bassist, my favorite bass player without question. Very cool guy, and seems to be very nice as well. I really like that he talks about warming up, that to me is the most important thing before even practice. Great video
I LEARNED I CAN DEMO WITH A PRO! GREATEST! & EYE WATCHED JULIA!!! + TO PRACTICE AT A SET OF TEMPO TOO, YET I ONLY DON'T PRACTICE- JUST RECORD. CAN'T PLAY; JUST DO. IMPROV BY EAR. THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS VIDEO.
I love the fact that Vikingur Olafsson got a mention! Adapting classical works to guitar/bass/electronics can be a touchy subject but many artists are doing it tastefully and wonderfully. Paul Galbraith has an incredible album of Debussy’s Children’s Corner on 8 string classical guitar (the Brahms guitar), which Stu Hamm also mentioned. Unexpected in this conversation but was happy to see it go this direction.
I think those things are important. I love history and I think history Is Important because it's where we've come from, it's our roots , our heritage. Saying that classical music has an influence on his music's very cool. You'd never think such different music could/would influence each other. But that's the thing about art. Different ppl see the world differently. Obvious I know but it speaks to the character of a person when they take different sources and make a connection between them . 2 of my favorite music groups are hank William's (country star) and the temptations(motown greats) at first they seem very different. Both are distinct icons of their genre. Hank for country ,tempts for soul motown. But despite the cultural differences (and the obvious racial component) both speak of the trials of men and women in every day situations. The loves the loses the extreme joy of life and the misery and unmet expectations. Both have amazing melodies and rhythm. And what I hear in country music like hank William's, is real soul. The temptations and motown in general is described as "soul" music. What some ppl see in country is a lot of cornyness. A lot of hackey topics and ideas which is true in some cases, but with the best artists you see and hear the real talent come thru. Hank had real soul. It was a white person's version but it was undeniably there. Cheers ! I just felt the need to testify. Thanks. Have a great 2020 have fun! Be happy!
No Stu, YOU can't bring a 4x10 cab with a compact head to a rock gig, which for you is Satch and Vai. The rest of won't need anymore than that for playing bad Pink Floyd covers at the local pub.
Yeah I’d routinely piss off sound guy’s in Buffalo where I’m from show up at a club gig with 2 ampeg svt 8x10s & 1 6x10 with a rack full of gear including svt 4 etc. lol oh & 5 basses
Up to now, the only stuff I’ve heard Stu Ham do are the trio of live cuts from the Joe Satriani EP *Dreaming #11.* Hearing him mention his piano studies sheds an immediate light on how he fashioned his bass part on “Memories”.
Saw Stu Hamm with Satch in 1996? in Sheffield on the Satriani self titled album tour. Tiny venue. Also the Crystal Planet tour Birmingham NEC when Schenker supported (and had black hair due to his dad's death), and also the Engines Of Creation tour in Birmingham NIA when Stu was using Hartke (sticks in my mind). Surprised the interviewer hadn't seen him before two years ago! Stu's Washburn was a pretty bland looking bass and the bright sound of his Kubicki couldn't be replicated. Glad he is with Warwick these days, although his configuration is pretty nonstandard Warwick! Really enjoy Stu's playing, hope to see him again one day and finally work out some of the tracks from Outbound as they're impossibly difficult. I think Crystal Planet has the most interesting bass lines on it, and albums since then by Satriani have very pedestrian boring supporting lines with no frills or flourishes.
That was a really nice interview, Stu is so lucky to be interviewed by Julia! Pity he didn't have his bass plugged in so we could hear the examples he was playing.
Ok u Hamm can you play Willie dixon's Spoonful and put your magic touch to it...And this little lady is asking some good questions...fun video.Stu ur the best...
i fell asleep a few times but when i would wake up i would say it was a good interview and i have been play bass 20 years But really don't practice like when i started cause i have good hand memory and i use mostly a Rickenbacker 4 string lefthanded with Rickenbacker strings... So everyone gets where they want to go just with there on shoe or boot and speed;)
Talented bassist for sure. You should check out his Bass solo on "love thing" in Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco. Freakin' amazing! I've just never understood the story of why Satriani fans would boo Stu..? Any idea or know the story?
It's interesting that one sometimes say that a person is "talented"... That may be the case. That they were born initally somewhat born with a certain skill. But man... Some of these guys must have put it a ton of quality practice hours as well.
Stu suggests playing music instead of muscle memory. Wow, that just eliminated 90% of the world's bass players from being taken serious for a second as actual musicians.
He must have forgotten. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_Man_%E2%80%93_A_Tribute_to_Rush he played on three songs lol. You can find the tracks on TH-cam
She is obviously a fan first, but does a stellar job on her interviews. A great combo, and perfect balance. Cheers to her.
But really! !! Beautiful. 😕

Love Stu! I was the drumtech for Satriani for the G3 tours and got to hang with Stu a lot. He played Factor basses then!
Gavin Simmons That’s cool, they both seem like really nice guys. I saw the first tour with EJ.
I've been aware of Stu, but never looked into him. I watched this to kill time and I got sucked in. He was so generous with his knowledge and eager to share stories. Julia was wonderful as well, very excited and engaged. She wasn't just reading questions, but rather having a conversation

This girl is a great interviewer! She brought so much out of Stu and I learned a lot. Great job!
Great interview. Stu’s a legend. I’ve nearly worn out my copy of his “Slap, Pop, Tap for the Bass” instructional video.
Stu was a HUGE influence on my playing. Stu played in Charlotte NC 2 years ago so I had to see him. I took my daughter so she could witness Stu's talent. He didn't disappoint. Thanks for the interview!!!!
Wow, excellent interview, Julia, with know-how and empathy

Stu Hamm is one of the reasons I play bass. Great interview as always!
I saw Stu play a couple times & I was blown away every time he played! He's amazing!

Great interview with Stu Hamm much respect for his low end skills a master of the bass for sure fun time
Always been a fan of stu...one of my favourite players and super cool

Saw Stu with Satriani on the Flying in a Blue Dream tour. Blew my mind.
Stu is the man! Iconic bassist, my favorite bass player without question. Very cool guy, and seems to be very nice as well. I really like that he talks about warming up, that to me is the most important thing before even practice. Great video
Great conversation! 👍
excellent interview for both ppl and camera crew and all!!
Saw Stu years ago when he was touring for The Urge record. Stellar show!
I have Stu Hamm Urge Bass. Still love it!
This is crazy! Stuart Hamm! Thabk you Julia and Thomann!
This is actually the first time I'm watching a Stu Hamm video, after having known his name and also his Urge bass for decades! :-O
Stuuuuuuuuu!!!
So bummed I missed Stu when he was at Blue Note Hawaii. One of the greats! Always holding the groove!👍
That was pretty good. I like the interviewer's questions and Stu man!
Love me some Stu Hamm!
..."and that's very 'rah' " 😂 spot on! couldn't have put it better myself.

Met Stu way back on the BX3 tour with Sheehan and Berlin. Really cool and an astronomical bass ace!!

I wasn't even aware of that he plays bass on that track; I guess I haven't really paid that much attention to any bassline in any Joe Satriani song.
Great interview thanks
Stu is awesome
I'm secure enough to use a small set up and not being bothered about what others might think it looks like. It is how it sounds that really matters.
