If you have all those extra USB cords, don't throw them in the trash, Hospital patients who come through the emergency room will have their phone but no way to charge it. Check and see if your local hospital would use those cords for those patients.
How Lovely & Thoughtful This Idea Of Yours Is Thank You Immensely For Sharing With Everyone God Bless You For Your Compassionate Enlightenments & Insightfulness 💚🤗💚
My work (hospital) would not accept cords. Items need to be disinfected between patients. Staff have enough stuff to keep clean honestly. But it’s a nice sentiment.
Hello Shea, I really like your suggestions and ideas ….. I’d just like to say that we should all consider the huge environmental effect of just chucking stuff out. There are often special recycling options available, such as pen/marker or cable cord/ electronic waste recycling if you look it up for your local area. Where i live, we can also recycle toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, empty makeup products, etc…. Pillows should be protected with waterproof cases then they don’t need to be trashed because they will stay clean. Eventually they will wear down and flatten, but don’t throw them out just because they’re dirty. Many people would say to wash them instead. Glass jars from the pantry with expired contents should be emptied, rinsed and the glass recycled. Similarly with old cleaning products under the sink….empty them, rinse the bottle and recycle it. There is usually recycling info on the bottle. Such everyday products can usually go in your home recycling bins, more unusual products may need to be taken somewhere like a drop off place. I feel responsible for every thing I discard, I will never just chuck something in the bin unless i know it is not recyclable. Great to donate good quality items to charity stores too……thanks for the video I actually really enjoyed it and Happy New Year to everybody! From Australia 🇦🇺
I agree! But recycling has gotten a bad name. It's not people like us who are the culprits. Our recycling is clean and sorted. It is the airports and public recycling that is ruining it. That all has to be hand sorted and most...yes most ends up in landfills.
Every time I attempt to recycle any electronics they want me to pay for it. When I try to recycle carpets or kitchen items they say only if it’s new. WTH - second hand stores do not want your used stuff anymore - very hard to recycle now
Putting the guilt-trip on the consumer is exactly what corporations want. They make minute changes while we sort/clean/deliver their used products to designated areas. Meanwhile since 2018 China has stopped accepting barges of our waste (recycling) which mostly ended up in their landfills any way.
I would like to add something to your list - plastic clothing. Detoxify your life by getting rid of all of the “fast fashion,” clothing made from synthetic materials. I’ve been purging everything made with polyester, for example, and replacing them with quality items made from natural materials like cotton, hemp, silk, and wool. It feels so good to have less (not more) and to wear things I feel better about touching my skin. 😊
I'm trying my best to do this but still, the thoughts of throwing something that still useful is so hard... Like exactly today, I planned to to clothes declutter and failed miserably. I just sit there and made tea and ate the biscuits sigh
@ I donated almost all of the clothes and some bed linens I purged to our church’s clothes closet. I’ve already received feedback that many of the items have already been distributed to some people who needed some things to keep them warm.
I use old cellphones to play games on Wi-Fi, save music, audiobooks and movies to cast to the TV so I can keep my actual cellphone clean and organized with necessities. They come in handy during hurricane season and provide entertainment during power outages when preserving the battery on my cellphone for emergencies is critical.
I do not throw away old plastic containers, I just do not use them for food, I repurpose them. They are amazing for little things in the garage or somewhere else in the house. Plastic is so expensive these days,so I try to use them until they are completely broken.
I went threw my dish towels and cloths just recently and moved them to the cleaning rag bucket. I live in a tiny house and we don't have any storage. Its probably a good thing i don't have storage space. The only items that takes up most space is the Christmas decorations. Ive been having to replace items. I believe i am finished replacing items. I finally found a perfect treetopper. I enjoy this video each year. Now, to go through the pens. Thanks for throwing that one in.
don't know what the thrift stores in your area takes in - but ours in Canada (Value Village) take in everything clothes & household (cords mugs books small appliances and coathangers too). Just pass it forward. I also love to thrift. There is always someone who wants what you don't.
Lots of these things can be donated and given away on buy nothing (cool way to give in the neighborhood that’s super convenient and lets you donate things like food or something you might not be able to take to the charity shop), composted, and recycled. Also just a reminder that most garbage companies have special ways to dispose of e waste and cords rather than the trash! ❤
I’m lucky where I live if you have a bag of clothes or stuff like that, you can put it in a clear plastic bag and set it in your driveway and somebody will always stop and take it. I also really like the buy nothing groups that’s been away. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of things that I just don’t need anymore. That were lightly used. I live near a school and I’ve had several times that I put out bags of clothes always write the size and white category of clothes they are that I’ve had some of the school kids walk up and ring the bell and ask if I would hold it for them until after school I’ve had so many school kids pick up bags of clothes, especially when I put out like sweaters and warmer things. I know a lot of people can’t do that. I’m lucky to not have an HOA.
I not only donated tons of little used and unused bras, but at the same time, threw away all the ones that have straps that don’t stretch, or connector hooks that are broken. I could not believe how many I would push aside when I replaced them. Unbelievable but I got a ton of space back in my lingerie drawer!
I declutter constantly so most of these items have been tackled within the last 3 months already. My next mission is my collection of jeans. I have far too many pairs but at least half of them don't fit.
I’ve done this over the past couple weeks. I have 3 trash bags full to donate. I have thrown out a lot of trash. I still have to go through my electronics boxes but I’m almost done. I feel great doing this regularly!
I just moved from one Over 55 Apartment to another Over 55 Apartment just two months ago. It was a great time to purge my whole house of clothes, medicines, spices and seasonings, makeup…..the list goes on. I can’t tell you how many time I went to Goodwill with items that were too good to throw away and still could be used by someone. It’s amazing how much we can accumulate over time.
Thank you for the video. I’ve done a lot of of this already, got safer cookware in November, got safer wood only spatulas spoons in December and went through all my spices in the summer. Did a big clothing donation from me and my daughter, sorry one of the bags I purchased from Amazon from your video got donated . Now, please help me straighten out my finances.
Off the back of this, practice mindful purchasing across all areas. I started only buying things I actually use rather than things I think I might like to use.
I tried donating board games some years ago & the center (Salvation Army or Goodwill) told me they don’t take board games that are opened. Apparently too often they have missing pieces.
We have a stainless steel air fryer that opens with a door (like an old school toaster oven) and we use it EVERY SINGLE day. We rarely use our regular oven because the air fryer is so much faster. We have the Cosori Smart Air Fryer and it’s AMAZING!!
Soooo true!! We need to do it more often!! I trashed everything from every single corner (but clothes, will get to it shortly)! To enter a New Year, according to Chinese tradition, you need to clean all the corners! Great inspiring video to get a fresh clean start!!🤩👍🤗
Shea thank you so so much for all the tips for getting rid of the toxic stuff in our homes. I started on the first going through my kitchen to get rid of all the things that you mentioned. And I have been wanting to change out my air fryer for one that’s non toxic. So thanks for the recommendation. I would love for you to make more videos about this topic. Thank you again and have a great new year.
On the rancid oil note, I had Graham crackers, soda crackers and chopped almonds I bake with and guess I wasn't paying attention and all three were rancid. Soda crackers I was shocked. I mentioned your vid to my friend and she had checked her cupboard and her peanut butter was rancid. She only uses for baking. From now on I clearly labeled the best before dates so I don't waste food❤
I really enjoy your videos! They are positive, helpful and thoughtful. Wow! 2025 is already doing you great (even if this video was filmed in 2024). You look fabulous! Thanks again for the helpful and thoughtful insights.
People may want to consider checking with their local domestic violence agencies to see if they accept cell phone donations. Cell phones with no service can be used to access 911.
For games, I would check with schools (if age appropriate) and/or nursing homes to donate them, if they take them but this video had lots of good ideas! Thx for sharing!
Encourage everyone to donate or recycle appropriately. There are local places for electronic recycling and most pharmacies have an area to recycle medicines and supplements.
I use my plastic cutting board to set out bread, crackers, cheese etc. That way I get use out of it safely. Mine are pretty marble looking. I haven’t cut on them so they do not have the cut marks on them. I just get so much use out of them! I bust out my nice bamboo charcuterie board for many things but I dunno the slim cutting boards are just so light and easy to clean/use. 😊 Also they say If you stand a pillow up vertically and it doesn’t stay up straight on its own, (is flimsy) it is not supportive enough for your neck and it’s time to replace. I have a neck/shoulder injury. So I need to replace mine every 1-2 years max
4:43 just a quick PSA on those black plastic utensils, not sure if everyone’s aware but often they are made of recycled plastic from things like old TVs, electronics and have extreme chemicals in them.
About once a year I go thru all the pens / markers… order new if needed and get rid of the pencils that have no erasers ! Unless you have replacement erasers !
That’s why I refused to buy a spice racks when I moved by myself. I knew I would never or hardly use most of them, so I bought the ones I regularly use individually instead. Idc if it’s technically more expensive, it takes up significantly less room and creates less waste
Instead of throwing discarded clothes that are too worn to donate, or cords try Trashie Take Back Bag. For a small fee, you fill the bag then use the QR code to make a label to drop off to the local UPS store. You are saving the environment and decluttering at the same time!
You should not throw medicine or supplements away. Instead, take them to a drug disposal day or if your police department has a drug disposal kiosk. Throwing them away, leeches the product into the environment.
The first time I purged the spice rack was shocking! Most of what I had was expired. I took a picture of the trashcan next to the recycle bin when I was finished. The recycle bin was loaded up with all those empty containers and the trash was filled with an entertaining design from all the spices emptied into it! 😂
Thank you for the motivation as it's so hard for me to toss things that can't be sold or donated, mostly old worn clothes. I was just a bit sad to see you've had a lot but that you've tossed them off camera as it's the hard thing for me to mix them in the normal trash. I usually do piles like that, but that I put in a clean bag that will stay in the garage or a closet instead of dumping them in a normal trash bag so I have no other choice than throw it out.
Great video as always Shea, I love how you get straight to the point of the video, I’ll often go through my pantry and throw away items that I haven’t used or are out of date because I only needed it for a certain recipe and haven’t used it since, pens 🖊️ are another thing I go through and throw out the ones that don’t work anymore, actually this video would be one of your best for Me, because I implement just about everything you talked about into my own home being someone that doesn’t like clutter around my home. Happy New Year 🥳 to You, Josh and your boys. Looking forward to what’s coming in 2025. Greetings from Queensland Australia ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Pay the exorbitant price for Ritual's Probiotics when my doctor at Johns Hopkins says just eat Greek Yogurt? No thnx honee. I think I'll trust Johns Hopkins over making you a commission, LOL.
Hi. Do you realize wood has pores, and that to seal them so food and moisture and bacteria don’t get inside, they treat the wood with all kinds of stains and sealants? How are those any better than using stainless steel utensils?!? At least with stainless steel there are no chemical surface treatments. Plus you can put them in the dishwasher!
Stainless is best for everything. Another thing is knives. Four chef's knives is 2 too many. Invest in really good STAINLESS Japanese or German sets and a really good 4 slip sharpener that does scissors and get rid of all those extras too. Wood or bamboo is the best for knives to keep them sharper longer. This was a really great list. Thank you. I'm new here but now I see why you have so many subscribers. Glad I'm here.
Totally agree with the bed pillows. I am a stickler. Your face is on hat thing for goodness sake!! I change my pillow case every 4-7 days. If my pillow itself is stained….gone!!
The pens, I had like 100+ colorful ones, highlighters, you name it. When I finished college I went through all of them and sold all my school supplies for like 10€, pens were, at most, half way through. Felt so good 😂
I gave problems throwing out good things. You do run into areas not taking items so you have to plan strategically. We donate to local charity shops and Vietnam vets, habitat for humanity. Just don’t bring junk it will get tossed anyway😊

local animal shelters and vets will take old towels, bedding and blankets

This is an amazing idea - if they take them!
Put on the free Facebook tag sales. Many people have nothing, so appreciate generosity of clothing, household items etc
Goodwill is probably a safer option. Who knows who turns up at your front door.

They just did away with the recycling bins where I live. I dont know why, but probably money.
Its always money over environment.

I LOVE to do this in January! Seasonally I do clothes. January is a whole house thing 😁
I use unbleached parchment paper liners to use in my Air Fryer. I’m not ready to give up on mine yet!
I can't use my air fryer??!! I use the silicone liners. I can't give up my air fryer!
Dollar tree sells parchment liners
My air fryer changed my life! lol no way
I used to toss spices when I moved often. Now, When I open a spice I write the mo/yr on the bottom. I toss them every 4/5 years.

Omg true!! Free hard drive storage!
That's what I do! All my music is on a 20 yr old blackberry ❤❤❤ I like the classics & the battery can be replaced!
Good reminder for me. It always feels good when high-traffic areas are organized. Saves me time and frustration in daily life.
Why are we so afraid to get rid of stuff! Let's clean out our homes! Happy New Years everyone!
I actually donate the Christmas or seasonal when I first pull it out, that way I’m hoping it gets more interest and a new home quicker 😊

each year a new trend, use what you have… and get rid of what’s used up or not serving you or your home.
I think these are great ideas to help people start into the new year with less clutter, more space, & free minds. Thanks!
Recent article in the NYT regarding black plastic utensils being toxic.
This has been proven to be wrong.
I moved three years ago, got rid of excess mugs and I have collected more mugs, lol need to go thru them again
Thanks for the tip on aluminum foil, Shea. Useful. Also the tip on the glass Ninja air fryer.
What about baking directly on this large baking trays? Are those aluminum?

Swedish Death Cleaning!! Let's go! LOL
Absolutely!
The latest findings about ‘black plastic’ are very alarming. Add it to the list of things that are not good for us.

Yup! and I add the dryer balls so they get a lil punch action to keep 'em in shape .. lol

I’d love links to the scientific journals you’ve read that state that certain materials are toxic and leaching into our food.
To those mugs you put basil to grow and your wires you can giveaway.

Ok silly question, what do use to replace aluminum 😅😅 they’re so useful and affordable
It depends on what the uses for but you can line cookie sheets or whatever with parchment paper

Can you include recommendations for new kitchen towels? I don’t like tea towels as a lot id kitchen towels don’t absorb much.
I always use white 100% cotton bar mop towels (usually get at Home Goods/TJ Maxx). Highly absorbent and I can bleach them when necessary.

Turn old worn out clothes into dust rags. Wipe bathtub clean, etc.
Dish towels don’t harbor bacteria if they are clean. Was them often.
Shea, you can ship anything you don't want to me and I'll take it to the women's shelter I work with. I know you can't do that. I admire what you do ❤
The healthier options are not annoying. A lot of people don’t know about a lot of these toxic items that are being used.
Thank you for all of these great suggestions! Now if I can only get my hoarding husband to unload crap!! 😂
Ive switched to glass also. Did my utencil drawer also. I havent stopped
Wow!! Lots of great ideas, Shea. Thanks!
Ive been going thru my house for 2 days. Funny you say spices, I cleaned my cupboards last nite, threw about 10 spices out
Stainless is best for everything.
I agree with all of it, every year❤
Can you recommend a good set of stainless steel pots and pans?
Good ideas! I love spring cleaning at the new year.
Happy New Year Shea 🎉. Wow good to know about the aluminum foil.
So candles are just...bad? (Say it ain't so!) Any recommendations for a nice-smelling home?
Jeez we can't use candles either?!!! She better not tell me I have to give up my Pura device!!!
I like maison berger lamps.
Good idea about pens and markets
please make a video about real house plants which ones can survive how to care for them
Totally agree with the bed pillows.
Felt so good 😂
My Instant Pot just made the donation pile! It works just fine, but I've never liked it. I love my crock pot.
I gave problems throwing out good things. You do run into areas not taking items so you have to plan strategically. We donate to local charity shops and Vietnam vets, habitat for humanity. Just don’t bring junk it will get tossed anyway😊
