In México, we have two types of mulberries. White, and purple. My father in law has 2 white mora trees (mora simply means "berry" but in México mora refers specifically to Mulberry) on his in-town property. The big one produces about 1,000 pounds of moras yearly, the small one about 100 pounds. Eat them, bake cakes with them, make wine with them. 🍷 And, make ice cream with them.
In our Mulberry trees, we have a vine growing, called a Cheyote. Sometimes spelled Chayote. It has a fruit the size of a grapefruit. Which, is green, think skinned, a little sticky on the inside as with most desert plants. Good stuff. Can be eaten raw, sliced and soaked in grape juice and served as a candied breakfast fruit or snack. It has a single, edible seed inside. I like it grilled, but not over mesquite! I have NOT seen a single Cheyote plant in Texas. Anywhere. Ever. Has anybody ever seen one? HEB is selling Cheyote fruit now, but I've never seen a live plant.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh and I have to applaud at the same time. Thanks for making the trip to Texas and enjoying its nature. Having lived in the Lone Star State all my life I still enjoy its wildlife. First the name of the river is the San Jacinto River and there are some real monster Alligator gars in it. But the truly huge fish 6 foot plus are found in the upper parts of Galveston and Trinity bays. I'm talking 100 to 150 pound fish, the world record fish was caught in the Rio Grande at 279 pounds. The last thing is you built your fire on top of a patch of poison ivy. Had it been a big patch you could have gotten serious trouble resulting in a hospital stay. Thank goodness it wasn't jackalope season ;)

It is so much easier that way! They way you did it makes me remember threatening to get the chainsaw!

Hi ya WB!!! I truly appreciate ur answer about the bones, I’ll be sure to carry gloves, at home, put n a cage to keep my dog and other critters paws off, letting bugs finish them there. Lol, now that I know I can collect them, my luck I won’t come across any now. Thank u much

Yup, I agree, it’s called finding your people. Your tribe. It’s great when you do. By the way, could you have “sewn” the fillets back into the Gar skin, and baked them that way? Just a thought…

i use red twine for those big gar..... no hook needed just unravel it a bit and cast it out. for some reason they like it and bite it and it gets all tangled up in their teeth

Hi ya WB! What u said about finding people with common interests, got any ideas as to how? Unfortunately being female makes it more of a challenge. + finding someone around my age, it would be nice to have someone to share these things with not to mention it would be less scary having someone else around. I don’t think many realize how much it stinks to be a girl, the fear of knowing what can happen being alone n the woods, many will say carry a gun, problem is, it won’t stand guard while I sleep. Thank u
