Amazing Humpback Whale Encounter With Atlantis Submarines

- Watch this incredible video as a pod of 5-10 humpback whales encountered an Atlantis Submarines tour off Lahaina, Maui on April 5. The submarine tour guests witnessed a competitive group behavior by the humpbacks in which the males were vying for the attention of a female that swam around the submarine for 45 minutes. In 20-plus years of dives, Atlantis Submarines guests have seen a lot of Hawaiis marine life, but this undersea show by the humpbacks was a first!
What a special treat for these people. Wish I could have been there.

These "Atlantis" tours are great no matter where you take them - Bahamas; Barbados; etc...but, seeing whales is incredible, especially this many!
Whales (and, dolphins) 'do' take an interest in certain sea vessels. While at sea in the US Navy, we once had a baby humpback whale leave its mother and follow us. Then, the mother began following - either trying to get her baby back, or, she took an interest in us, too!?!?

Awesome video... we went on the Atlantis in Lahaina in July 2009 and only saw some small schools of small fish still was very cool.
Cool! When I was in the tour in '06 off the coast I guess of Kona, we didn't see much...still a good experience!
This is just amazing :) I've scuba dived with whale sharks in the Maldives, but this is just something else :) Like the scene from Jurassic park 2 when the 2 t-rexes are inspecting the trailers :P

I understand this closeness, interaction with humpbacks is extremely rare and I could not expect a similar experience. ... but
During whale season, how often do you see them while under?
How often would you say they show interest in the submarine?
A few years back I was diving the Carthaginian and you drove by... I don't know what was cooler... I loved it.

I live on Maui and have booked lots of people on this submarine trip...wish I had been on this one myself! I have had some pretty amazing close encounters, though, without plexiglass in the way.
