    Hello Joe, I am writing from Turkey. I have the same engine. After the first operation, I cannot start it again for a long time. I was worried about going on a long road, but last time it stopped suddenly. In short, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

      Hello erdoganordukaya, thanks for watching. A no start can be many things. First check if your spark plugs are good then check if they get a good spark on start. Bad spark will cause hard start.
      When it starts does your engine run rough? If it’s really rough, it could be because your reed valve are damaged. They are other things to check first.
      If you have a hard time starting it, always pull to prime button and put it back in place before starting. It will shoot a little spray of fuel to help it start. Also make sure your fuel bulb is pumped hard. That can only help the start of your engine.
      If your carburetor is gunk up, running some Seafoam into it to clean it.
      When running, is your idol good? Your idle screw might need a little adjustment. Also, you might need to adjust your air fuel mixture screw, but that’s one of the last things to do.
      Let me know and good luck 👍

    Hey joe. Been a while. Hope you've been well. You don't happen to have a video on how to connect this 25 HP after it's been disconnected from the boat? It is now sitting on a stand, and no controls. But I want to be able to fire it up to show to people to try to sell it. I'm still an amateur at this stuff and trying to figure out how I can hook up the gas line and safely connect the battery so that I can just pull start it on the stand. I'd rather not connect the controls to it and just be able to pull start it but then I guess it'll be a problem how to put it in gear to show people forward and reverse if there's a video that shows how to connect the controls back onto it even better cuz I do still have the controls I'm just intimidated how to connect everything back to the motor because the mechanic disconnected everything when I wasn't there. Thanks so much

      Hi Mike, I'm doing good, I hope your doing well. OK so you have 4 wire coming out of the outboard (Black, Red, Yellow with red stripe and Black with yellow stripe on it). To start you engine you will need a 12V battery. You will connect your red wire to positive of the battery and black wire to the negative of the battery.
      At this point you can start you outboard by pull rope. Make sure your kill switch next to pull to prime button is off. If your switch is at the down position then your engine wont start (needs to be up). Once started, to turn your engine off you need to flip the kill switch to down position it will shut off engine.
      If you don't want to start with pull rope. We have 2 wires left. The "Yellow with red stripe" will be your started engine wire. As soon as that wire touches the positive of the battery your engine will try to start. Basically it's your cranking wire. Once your engine is started, disconnect the "Yellow with red stripe" from the 12V (positive of the battery). Basically grab the wire and make the the striped part of the wire touch the positive of the battery. When started just put the wire aside. if this make you uncomfortable just start it with pull rope :)
      And the last wire (Black with yellow stripe) is for extra kill switch which you wont need if your shutting your outboard with kill switch next to pull to prime button. So don't connect this wire.
      Now for the controls, do you have the stick that comes with the engine? You would need to install it to have control of the acceleration and gear. I can't help you with that since i don't even have that lever that connect to outboard. my engine always has been on the side hand controller.
      Very important, While the engine is running always keep your red and black wire connected on the battery. If you disconnect it while engine is on, it can damage your voltage regulator.
      Hope this helps :)

      @@joetheboatguy5394 Hey Joe. I'm SO sorry. I had a ton of personal things happening when you replied and I forgot to reply. I do understand your instructions to a certain degree, but I'm still not sure on a couple. I might do the same thing I did last time, and make a short video of what I have so you can see. Your description of the wiring makes sense, but I have a connector that was pulled out by the mechanic when he took my motor off (when swapping with another). And for controls, I have similiar thing as you I think. I don't have the tiller handle/stick attached to motor. I have the 2 cables that go from motor and connect to a separate throttle that was connected to a steering wheel. But again, my motor is no longer connected to the boat - an older, 50HP from 1975 is (which is NOT working and this whole thing has been a nightmare). So for the 25HP motor, I have the motor itself on a stand, and a throttle control on the floor with the 2 cables, disconnected from the motor. I'm not sure how to connect the throttle control to the motor inside (if you know what I mean). And I definitely don't have access to the steering wheel to reconnect to the motor. I don't care about steering of course. I just want to be able to start the motor, put it in forward and give it gas by increasing throttle. AGain, when I can, I'll try and send you a short 1 min or less video of what I have, including showing you inside motor with cover off. And I do have access to connect it to a battery as well. thanks again ! I'm now trying to find a video of a person who has replaced an ignition switch box on the 1975 50HP mercury outboard motor. It's a rare motor as it was the only year they made it, and apparently that's because of the poor design and/or failure rates of this damn ignition switch box that failed. I just spent 700.00 ordering a new one from mercury that's on its wya and i've already spent a ton with a local mechanic, so I took the boat back and I don't want to have to spend more for him to replace the ignition switch. I think I can do it, but would have been nice to see somebody with a video on it but not 1 person. It's all good. Take care!

    Hello great video, I was wondering though on the shifter controller there is an idle lever, is it alright to push up as far as it will go when starting, I had a guy tell me I can damage the motor because in neutral the idle lever doesn t advance the timing and i will get pre detination. If you could help it would be apreciated. Thanks

      @joetheboatguy5394  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi robertbard, Thanks for watching. The "fast idle" on the side controls is for older carbureted boats. You pop the boat into neutral and use the fast idle to let the motor warm up for a minute before use. But NO I wouldn't push up as far as it will go when starting RPM will be max out. Not good for Engine, can cause damage to your engine :(

      Hi Hamond, thank you for watching. Are you running the right spark plugs? I know that sound elementary but it can affect cold starts especially.
      Check your spark plug cable make sure no cracks on them. Also check spark plugs make sure they are healthy.
      Another thing but rarely the problem, fuel filter make sure it’s changed.
      If you pull the “pull to prime” button it should help to start your engine when cold. It sprays a little fuel to help it start.
      Last thing to check would be your reeds but that’s an easy check.
      Let us know how it goes 👍

      I had that problem and the plastic float pin "stop" had broken and the pin was popping out of its supports after a couple of float cycles. My solution was buying a long float pin. By using a pong float pin the edge of the pladtic bowl acts as a stop.

    Great video thanks. I have same exact motor. Question; person I bought boat from has it connected to a throttle with steering wheel. In the throttle it mentiond "choke" as well. Do i still need to push in/pull out this choke knob on actual motor if its connected to steering wheel? Also, I find my boat initially starts ok. But while its idling (before I give throttle/gas), it "putt putts" a lot in idle (similar to how yours sounds in idle) but entine usually shuts off if I dont give it gas immediately after starting. Ever run into this issue? Im also about to start boat up for first time since it was winterized and I sadly dont know where the water hose connects :( I will put that sea foam in. Thanks!

    • @joetheboatguy5394
      @joetheboatguy5394  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mikecorazza, I have a steering wheel and throttle also, but I don't have the choke option on it. When you activate the choke on your throttle do you see anything move on your engine side? Your choke on the throttle side might not be connected to outboard. Pull to prime button is a little more then just opening the choke. It also injects a little gas to help engine start better. For the “putt putts” might need to change your reeds or adjust the fuel and air mixture with the screw Infront of the carburetor. If you do adjust screw, “mark it first”, this screw can be tricky to adjust. I will have a video soon how to change reeds on outboard, I changed them this weekend and the outboard sounds much smoother. For the water you need to purchase water clamps to put at the bottom water entry of the outboard. Hope this helps. 😊

      Hi chrispeterson, Thanks for watching. I will send you to another video I made so it will show you what I'm talking about when I say "metal rod". You will see the metal rod at 33sec of this video, the metal rod that is connected to your plastic upside down plastic L.
      The plastic upside down L you see at the right of the screen in the video it is connected to you knob. If you turn your nob right for increase idle you will see the upside down plastic L pull the metal rod connected to it. That metal rod goes to your idle (golden colour) Rod. You can see this idle rod on the same video at 1.58min top left corner.
      So make sure by turning you idle knob your plastic upside down L should be pushing metal rob when turning left and pulling metal rod when turning knob right.

If you’re re-using the same water for sure it’s gonna start heating up with time. If it’s not the same water than some thing might be clogged in your system because the water does come out warm but not hot. What you can try and do is blow some air with a compressor in your cooling water exit. Let me know 👍

    You're confusing me with choke open and closed, I believe you have it backwards.

      Hi Kenhart, thanks for watching, when I say open choke mean it let more air in. Closed choke will let less air in. Hope this helps :)

    Mine just leaks gas when I start it and won’t run. Any suggestions?

      Leaks gas from where? If it’s from carburetor. You will need to get it cleaned. Also check your gas filter…
      From Google: When the tip of the valve becomes worn or debris prevents the closing of the valve, fuel flows continuously into the bowl thus flooding the engine. Under severe conditions gas may soak the air filter or overflow out of the carburetor and onto the ground while parked.
