There are certain solvent combinations which are more suited to this approach. Both solvents must be miscible with each other.

i followed this, and instead of it precipitating 2 seperate layers formed (pet ether and etoac)

Noticed something similar. I think it has something to do with the miscibility of the solvents.
In my example, methanol (good solvent) and ether (bad solvent) were mixed, and I got precipitate in a single phase.
However, by adding too much ether, two phases formed.
Not quite sure about the miscibility between pet.ether and etoac though. Think you need miscible solvents for this to work.

@@brashka8452 well ether and methanol are as soluble as etoac and pet ether. i think what was going on is that my lower ethyl acetate phase just saturated with product, making the pet ether insoluble

@@brashka8452 Yes, you need two solvents which are miscible. If the product forms as an oil, Vogel recommends re-warming the flask and then cooling quickly in an ice-bath with scratching.
