As Aranor and Elenya continued their journey, an afternoon downpour forced them to seek shelter in a temporary storage space behind a street vendor's stall. The cramped space was filled with crates of goods, and the rhythmic patter of rain against the roof provided a steady backdrop. Inside, Elenya took out the fruit of Viva. Its glowing light seemed even more radiant in the gloomy weather, casting a warm, ethereal glow throughout the small shelter. Elenya stared at the fruit, her emotions swirling with a mixture of hope, fear, and apprehension.
Aranor, having just dried off their coats, sat down on an upturned crate. He noticed Elenya’s pensive gaze and offered a reassuring smile, though his eyes held a hint of curiosity. Sensing her internal conflict, Aranor’s expression softened.
“Aranor,” Elenya began, her voice trembling slightly, “what would be your wish if you possessed the fruit of Viva?”
Aranor frowned, taken aback by the unexpected question. He studied Elenya's face, searching for the deeper meaning behind her inquiry. “Why do you ask, Elenya?”
Elenya took a deep breath, her eyes locking onto Aranor’s. “Why didn’t you leave me during this journey? You could have abandoned me. My father threatened you to be my guard. You could have escaped this burden.”
Aranor remained silent for a moment, his gaze intense as he contemplated his response. Finally, he spoke, his voice steady and filled with resolve. “I will keep my promise as long as the King of Phenarium, your father, keeps his.”
Before Elenya could respond, Aranor’s expression shifted suddenly. His body tensed, and he stood up swiftly, his hand moving instinctively to the hilt of his sword. The bearded man from the tavern had appeared again, his presence now more menacing as he held a sword at the ready.
Elenya’s heart raced, fear gripping her as she realized the danger they were in. Aranor positioned himself protectively in front of her, his eyes never leaving the intruder. “What do you want?” Aranor demanded, his voice cold and unwavering.
The bearded man smirked, his eyes glinting with malice. “I’ve been following you two. That fruit of Viva... it belongs to me.”
Aranor tightened his grip on his sword, his muscles coiled like a spring ready to snap. “You’re not taking it from her,” he said firmly, his voice steady and resolute.
