  • Curtis Harrington began making films as a teenager in the 1940s, beginning with his take on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" on 8mm. During his fifty year career as a director, Harrington made many horror films dealing with the unseen and the macabre, featuring legendary Hollywood stars. "House of Harrington" profiles Curtis' fascinating career, which ended with a full-circle return to the work of Edgar Allan Poe in 2002.

Absolutely excellent! I met Mr. Harrington in 2005 and provided him transportation to a private screening of a film made by one of his director friends. In turn, he took me out to dinner that evening and then gave me a tour of his favorite spots in Los Angeles. Just a memorable evening I'll never forget. We remained in touch until his passing.

This is fantastic. i worked on Usher, did everything from grip stuff to pulling focus, to using the b smoker. I knew Curtis a bit as my friend and x-roommate Sean Nepita (co-star of Usher) lived in Curtis' guest house. I used to swim in his pool over there at the house, and I'd go over occasionally and wash Curtis' Benz for him. He was always very kind, and always had the best stories for us. I still have a bunch of hi-8 video I shot behind the scenes from the movie. If you think about it, Curtis should have a star on the Walk of Fame. In almost every main project he did the lead from it has their own star. I mean, at a minimum guilty by association, right?!! Cheers to Curtis!

Thanks for sharing this! Me and Tyler Hubby who made this short film were friends with Curtis as well. Tyler edited "Usher." I still have a set of Curtis' Edgar Allan Poe books from when he was a kid.

Great video! I met Curtis in 1985 and he impressed me as a fascinating character with lots of interesting tales to tell. One only had to step into his Hollywood Hills home to recognize that he was not the typical L.A. gay man. On my first visit, I told him his home reminded me of a haunted house, which seemed to put a smile on his face. The stuffed black raven perched in the dimly lit living room stands out in my memory. He was kind enough to invite me to a couple dinner parties at his home, which always included a fascinating collection of creatives -- I'm an artist/photographer/videographer, which is no doubt what got me those invitations. It was very cool to see the footage of teenage Curtis. I had no idea he was so cute in his youth!

I really enjoyed The Killing Kind and The Dead Don't Die. He made some very entertaining movies. I wish this documentary was a lot longer but i'm thankful it exists at all.

@ 17:06: If Piper Laurie is in the movie, then you KNOW it's going to be good!
