Well, I wouldn't quite say that. For one: the user interface has come a long way. Although the basic options were introduced in the 1980s, other advances have also come with the decades- like compression, computer speed, 3D animation, perspective tools, etc. And also, the Quantel Paintbox that's being used in this video was only available for purchase for $250,000+ USD in the 1980s and 90s. Needless to say it was mostly television and video production studios that bought them. But, with all the advances in computer graphics in the late 90s, Quantel quickly fizzled out. We're in constant evolution.
Nah, this is classic Paintbox stuff. Ironically, those had far weaker hardware than the prohibitively expensive SGI boxes. Their power came from a combination of hardware(custom video ASICs + genlock) and clever software.
