I would have released her close by incase she couldn't find food..How would anyone know she could live on her own?I agree she should be out among her own but checked on to make sure she is surviving

All mammals (at least?) can get rabies... Even humans (that's why we can get it...)... It's the first vaccine made in history (Pasteur), and also the only vaccine that can (and must) be given AFTER the contamination. And sadly some species are associated with rabies because also of superstitions, and those poor species are often gentle and cute, like rats, racoons, bats, foxes, etc. Usually you can see specific behavior when one individual has it: all species rarely attacks humans and avoid us, normally, but when inoculated, they are aggressive, have a lot of saliva, attacks like they are "mad" (they are), and you sometimes need to kill it so it stops. In this situation, you must act quickly to do tests and get vaccine, and often you have to report it to local authorities too. It depends on the country I guess, but in Europe, and I believe in US too it should be the case.
