I'll second the vote for "Love and Happiness," although it isn't a top 40 type of song, more of a lengthy album track. But my personal favorite Al Green song is "Look what you done for me."

This is his best, his coolest song BY FAR. Why not listen to some other tracks along the same vein, from the same time frame, that were also monsters like this one? I'll Be Around- The Spinners, Across 110th Street - Bobby Womack, Show And Tell - Al Wilson, Backstabbers - The O'Jays, Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps, Oh Girl - Chi-Lites

Master class in the value of restraint in singing. This guy clearly has the chops to just go over the top and stun people at any point. He never does. In fact, at some moments where others might take a star turn, he actually backs off. He knows he doesn't have to prove anything. A completely mature and accomplished performance...

He is the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle, which is not far from Elvis Presley's Graceland. By the way, the drummer on this song was the late Al Jackson, Jr., who also co-wrote "Let's Stay Together." He was such a master of his craft that he was known as the "Human Timekeeper." More Al Green, please, guys! He has a catalog filled with songs that are every bit as good as this one. My favorite is "Love and Happiness." It has such a tasty groove.

I've been with my husband now for 22 years. There are days I was so mad at him, I didn't even want to look at him, other days I couldn't STOP looking at him and feeling the love that we have built up over that time. It's so easy to just give up in a marriage, that's the easy way. The harder way is working to accept the other persons differences and remembering that is what drew you to them in the first place. None of us are perfect, I make mistakes and apologize when I am wrong. This man has stood by me through thick and thin, loved me through a terminal cancer diagnosis and is still beside me. I know he will be holding my hand as I pass from this world into the next and eternity is the place, I want to spend with him.
I am so glad I grew up listening to music like this. Al Green, Barry White, Lou Rawls, The Isley Brothers, Gregory Abbott, Terrance Trent Darby... so many great soul songs that are heaven to your ears. Thanks for the memories on this one.

To quote Andy (although he was talking about a different singer), "The sheer amount of vocal charisma on display is almost unbelievable". This is S tier but it is a close second to "Love and Happiness". That is the best Al Green song, and maybe as good as pop ever gets.

Rev Al!! This gentlemen is QUINTESSENTIAL Soul. Privileged to have seen him live in '73 or '74 when he was at the height of his popularity. His expressive soulful vocal stylings with that nasty gritty sexy band made him an almost instant icon.
"Love and Happiness", another standard of his you might want to hit if you ever come back around.

Try his live version of The Bee Gees “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart “

Welcome to the world of the Reverend Al Green. So many to choose, Tired Of Being Alone, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (written by Barry & Robin Gibb). His voice can tear your heart out, or fill it full of joy. A song that hardly ever gets mentioned is Simply Beautiful, never has a song been so aptly named. Funnily enough I first became aware of the song when it was used on a car ad in the UK. It's just Al, an acoustic guitar and some strings, his vocals are absolutely mindblowing.

OMG!! YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY to hear your reaction to this!! There was a time in the early 70's Al Green was The Man in R&B/Soul, and this is from that time!! A few more you need to hear are 'Love and Happiness', 'Here I Am', 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart', . . . really, just look up his greatest hits, listen! Haha!! A cover of this by Tina Turner was the start of her 80's reemergence!
