I'll second the vote for "Love and Happiness," although it isn't a top 40 type of song, more of a lengthy album track. But my personal favorite Al Green song is "Look what you done for me."

This is his best, his coolest song BY FAR. Why not listen to some other tracks along the same vein, from the same time frame, that were also monsters like this one? I'll Be Around- The Spinners, Across 110th Street - Bobby Womack, Show And Tell - Al Wilson, Backstabbers - The O'Jays, Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps, Oh Girl - Chi-Lites

Master class in the value of restraint in singing. This guy clearly has the chops to just go over the top and stun people at any point. He never does. In fact, at some moments where others might take a star turn, he actually backs off. He knows he doesn't have to prove anything. A completely mature and accomplished performance...

Good comment. And the backing vocals are amongst the best ever, any song , period.
I know A&A felt a little cheated that the song faded out so fast, but the producer new his craft: "That was just perfect. One for the ages. And we're done." Transcendent, as A observed 51 years later~~~

Watching y'all react to this was an incredible experience!!! Rev. Al is music royalty here in Memphis. And he's a real reverend. He is the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle, which is not far from Elvis Presley's Graceland. By the way, the drummer on this song was the late Al Jackson, Jr., who also co-wrote "Let's Stay Together." He was such a master of his craft that he was known as the "Human Timekeeper." More Al Green, please, guys! He has a catalog filled with songs that are every bit as good as this one. My favorite is "Love and Happiness." It has such a tasty groove.

I've been with my husband now for 22 years. There are days I was so mad at him, I didn't even want to look at him, other days I couldn't STOP looking at him and feeling the love that we have built up over that time. It's so easy to just give up in a marriage, that's the easy way. The harder way is working to accept the other persons differences and remembering that is what drew you to them in the first place. None of us are perfect, I make mistakes and apologize when I am wrong. This man has stood by me through thick and thin, loved me through a terminal cancer diagnosis and is still beside me. I know he will be holding my hand as I pass from this world into the next and eternity is the place, I want to spend with him.
I am so glad I grew up listening to music like this. Al Green, Barry White, Lou Rawls, The Isley Brothers, Gregory Abbott, Terrance Trent Darby... so many great soul songs that are heaven to your ears. Thanks for the memories on this one.

It's his VOICE. Smooth as butter - THAT'S soul. Thank God I grew up with this music. You MUST hear his quintessential "LOVE and HAPPINESS ". ALL Al Green music is "S" tier!!!🥰

Wow! Does this ever take me back to 1970 or 71. I dedicated this song to my first sweetheart at 14 yrs old in middle school (7th grade). Nothing better to do some heavy necking to, than some Al Green. This was 52 yrs ago. I'm now 66 yrs old.
    Thanks for some great memories

OMG!! YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY to hear your reaction to this!! There was a time in the early 70's Al Green was The Man in R&B/Soul, and this is from that time!! A few more you need to hear are 'Love and Happiness', 'Here I Am', 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart', . . . really, just look up his greatest hits, listen! Haha!! A cover of this by Tina Turner was the start of her 80's reemergence!

Great song, must checkout Love and Happiness. We used to put it on the jukebox to start out our night of pool and beer.
It was tradition to break the first rack as soon as the first guitar riff leads in to the organ.

As a man who grew up listening to Al Green every day in my teen years, i must say you two have nailed what Al Green's voice was about and his persona when he sings. Restrained, Powerful, Control, Emotional and my fave, so SMOOOOOOTH! I love Al Green. Thanks for getting to his vibe. I must say i was shocked when you two pulled him up. LOL. Al Green is the ultimate artist in his craft. Welcome to his world guys. You've done well in choosing Al Green.

You guys nailed what it's like to be a couple that's been together through good times and tough times. You wake up one day in the midst of a life that doesn't really look anything at all like you thought it would 20 years earlier, and you look at your spouse and realize that their dreams didn't really come true either, but the two of you stuck it out even when it didn't make sense. Then you realize that the vows you took 20 years earlier about "'til death do us part" and "for better or worse"...those vows that you stuck by have become a gift that allowed a beautiful, committed love to flourish. A love that isn't dependent on circumstances or feelings. I can honestly say that if I could choose any woman on the planet to live my life with, I'd still choose the girl I've got. That's why I sometimes call her my "girlfriend for life". And that's true even if I'm mad or annoyed with her. She's the only girl for me.
