1st Book- 01:21 Vitruvius's 10 books on architecture 2nd Book- 02:12 Ten canonical buildings by Peter Eisenmann 3rd Book- 03:03 The eyes of the skin by Juani Palasma 4th Book- 04:03 Modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton 5th book- 04:49 Architecture forms space and order by Francis Ching 6th Book- 05:27 Presidents in architecture by Roger Clark 7th Book- 06:15 Learning from las vegas by Robert Rentery and Denise Scott Brown extra books : Delirious new york by ramkul, understanding architecture by mccarter, elements of architecture by kulhas this is a library's a gigantic and a new architecture by le corbusier.
A few corrections to make searching for them easier, maybe: Peter Eisenman with one N, Juhani Pallasmaa, Precedents in Architecture, Robert Venturi, and Rem Koolhaas.
Pallasmaa's take on architecture has been greatly under-appreciated and has recently gained more popularity due to new developments in Virtual Reality - making measurable the subjective experience. It is intriguing to see how his work can have such a strong influence in post-colonial and post-orthographic architecture; in all great addition to the reading list especially for The Future of Architecture
Nice list! A few more suggestions: - Charles Jencks, The Language of Postmodern Architecture - Jeremy Till, Architecture Depends - Beatriz Colomina, Are we Human? Notes on an archaeology of design. - Kari Jormakka, Design Methods
Great tips! Read some of these books, but some were new, gonna look into them. I would add in the list any book by Jan Gehl - he writes beautifully about public spaces and the life in them, something that architects sometimes tend to disregard
Completely agree with the sentiments by the author. We suggest students also check out What is Architecture?: Understanding Architecture (2019) to bring another perspective in
Gracias Ramses, no te preocupes entiendo tu frustración. Pero al momento de crear el canal (2016) había una mayor audiencia que hablaba inglés, y al dia de hoy aun es asi. En terminos educativos prefiero alcanzar al mayor numero de gente, espero entiendas :)
¡Belo vídeo, como siempre! Some other books that I think are essential and have shaped my relationship with architecture: - Thinking Architecture / Atmospheres, by Peter Zumthor - Habitar, by Juhani Pallasmaa - The Timless Way of Building, by Christopher Alexander - In Praise of Shadows, by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki I found both Zumthor books, as well as The Timeless Way of Building and Learning from Las Vegas, online for free! It's always worth making a quick Google search, you'd be surprised by the amount of free books we have available.
if you haven't you at least should take a look at Zumthor's "thinking architecture" - "atmospheres" is also good; Gehls' various works on how cities should focus its design on people's scale and real needs; "pensar con las manos" by Baeza; "la buena vida" by Àbalos. on a more historic side you have Benevolo's, Rossi's and Chueca's works

I dont recomend do this with the Kenneth Frampton book. The newest editions have texts about conteporary architecture too and, in my opnion, is the best part of the book
Nope. According to Venturi, "duck" is a sculpture, then a building. "Where the architectural systems of space, structure, and program are submerged and distorted by an overall symbolic form." Crawford Manor is pointed as an example, which is called "heroic and original". Decorated shed is "where systems of space and structure are directly at the service of program, and ornament is applied independently of them." Venturi Guild House is pointed as an example, which is called "ugly and ordinary". Venturi encouraged building cheaply, but with additive lovely ornament.
Postmodernism is a vide term. There were lots of postmodern ducks, but in the book, Venturi criticizes especially late modernist tendencies which resulted in over-complicated plans and expensive structures.
Principia architectonica - Alberto Campo Baeza Cromorama - Riccardo Falcinelli (idk if this one is translated in english) Eloquent Silences - Carlos Marti Aris
start with the one you think you´d like best! Don´t put pressure on yourself. If I had the oportunity, I would have read Form Space and Order by Ching, Atmospheres by Zumthor, Understanding Architecture by Pallasmaa,
I went to a Theoretical School of Architecture....I never read even one of these books except "Learning from Las Vegas", and it's a crap book. In fact a wrote a paper called "Being Mislead by Learning from Las Vegas" lol!
So good! All my favorites. Random one which I found helpful for my tastes - Lo:TEK by Julia Watson. All about indigenous “technology” and going back to the old ways to save the earth.
Architecture students, if your professors list recommended books on your syllabus, read them even if its not required for the class assignments!!
I can´t emphasize this enough! Specially if they are not in the syllabus they must have something interesting worth reading....
Wish it was that easy :/
How i wish all i have to do is study lol
I wish! I was so busy I couldn't have time to read! 😂

yes! Pallasmaa and the whole genre was greatly undervalued a few decades ago
Nice list! A few more suggestions:
- Charles Jencks, The Language of Postmodern Architecture
- Jeremy Till, Architecture Depends
- Beatriz Colomina, Are we Human? Notes on an archaeology of design.
- Kari Jormakka, Design Methods
great!! the essays by Colomina are really good
Great tips! Read some of these books, but some were new, gonna look into them. I would add in the list any book by Jan Gehl - he writes beautifully about public spaces and the life in them, something that architects sometimes tend to disregard
Thanks! Yeah, this was mostly architectural history and theory-related. But hopefully, the next one will be towards cities
Completely agree with the sentiments by the author. We suggest students also check out What is Architecture?: Understanding Architecture (2019) to bring another perspective in
I love complexities and contradictions by Robert Venturi, also Pattern Language
love them too!
"The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand, is a novel about the architecture community and is a light read, if you're into that kind of stuff.
Thank you for the recommendation! I’m majoring architecture and environmental design. I’ll get it.
awesome!
A really well-rounded list.
thanks!
Thanks for this video! ❤️
you´re welcome!
Man, good compilation...
Me gusta tu contenido, me apena un poco que lo hagas especifico para gente de habla inglesa sabiendo que hablas castellano.

Solo me he leído los 10 libros de la arquitectura. Los otros ya vendrán cayendo con el tiempo. Buen video!

Lessons for students in architecture by Herman Hertzberger.
Hertzberger is a master
¡Belo vídeo, como siempre! Some other books that I think are essential and have shaped my relationship with architecture:
- Thinking Architecture / Atmospheres, by Peter Zumthor
- Habitar, by Juhani Pallasmaa
- The Timless Way of Building, by Christopher Alexander
- In Praise of Shadows, by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki

If there's one that says, stop using the term form vs function then thats number one!
In praise of shadows 🔥
yesssssssssss
The Great Good Place by Ray Oldenburg for the value of informal public areas! (also not specifically architecture)
This ain't really an architecture book but i found it very eye opening. "The Decay of Lying" by Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde is a master!
"Structural Analysis" by Aslam Kassimali, also available in SI version.
great! will check it out thanks!
Poetics of Space by Richard Bachelard is also a great read 😉
Thank you for sharing this. I highly recommend not a new book but very profound. 'Looking and Seeing' by Kurt Rowland.
if you haven't you at least should take a look at Zumthor's "thinking architecture" - "atmospheres" is also good; Gehls' various works on how cities should focus its design on people's scale and real needs; "pensar con las manos" by Baeza; "la buena vida" by Àbalos. on a more historic side you have Benevolo's, Rossi's and Chueca's works
there are so many good ones here! I would add the series by Xavier Monteys on the house

Where did you study??
And Rudofsky, Architecture without Architects! Its one of the main books for understanding the architecture!
yesss!! great one
Please make a list on non-architectural, non-design books..
yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss excited for this one
If I cannot afford the newest editions of these books, would you still suggest getting them in an older edition?
I dont recomend do this with the Kenneth Frampton book. The newest editions have texts about conteporary architecture too and, in my opnion, is the best part of the book
agree! apart from the Frampton one, older editions work as well... Sometimes you have to spend some time exploring what brings each new edition...
Thanks! I’ll definitely add these to my list. One of my favorites is “The Architecture of Happiness” by Alain de Botton
I have never read it! I´ll lookinto it
I'm in my 3rd yr now and I've never really read any book damn looks like it's time to take things seriously
haha no worries, as long as you are reading something. literature, novels, biographies, etc, just read!
اريد ترجمه للغه العربيه لو سمحت 🥺
Si eres colombiano también estaría bien que hagas videos en español, porfavor, este no tienee subtitulos
pronto los pondré! perdón pero a veces toma mucho tiempo hacer videos :)
I think you got it the wrong way around for the duck vs decorated shed? Duck = post-modernism and decorated shed = modernism?
Nope. According to Venturi, "duck" is a sculpture, then a building. "Where the architectural systems of space, structure, and program
are submerged and distorted by an overall symbolic form." Crawford Manor is pointed as an example, which is called "heroic and original".
Decorated shed is "where systems of space and structure are directly at the service of

what about, death and life of great american cities by jane jacobs, always my favorite

Good selection, my concern is on how I get them with little money or free
Lots mentioned here have PDF online because they’re old/famous. Try that or borrowing from public/school library
try with a LIbrary! they sure have these classic ones. Or if you Buy used books you can also GEt them with low prices N. read between the lines
There are better books out to study than those! But I understand those are your favorites of you!
As a 10th grader which architecture book shall I read ? pls tell?
