As a senior, coming back to piping after a 25-year brake, being left-handed, my problem is a VERY lazy right hand. I hope these exercises will help me, here in Brazil. Thanks, Matt.
Brilliant! Covid has allowed me to get back into piping - 25 years ago I travelled to a piping school for a week... instructor notes listed “crossing noises” as something I needed work on... since I’m starting from scratch I wanted to know what crossing noise was... your video was excellent! Not only did you identified the issue, but you offered corrective exercises. A really effective approach! (Found your tutorial linked from “Bob Dunsire” Forum). Keep up the great work!
Just watched your video, downloaded the dots, and will begin the regimen ASAP. Been piping for 30 years and ALWAYS get docked in competition for crossing noises. I'll give an update after the Aug. games.
Yet again a great exercise. Be aware that I'm "stealing" all your teachings to share with my pupils, hopefully, they'll be able to avoid the pitfalls I've had. And for those of you considering becoming Patreons be aware that ... those of us in the "club" had an "advance premiere" of this video, that's another little perk.
Crossing noises get particularly bad for me when I start to tire or am mentally distracted. Also, I started on an electric chanter, and I can attest to your point about their potential for creating bad habits if not managed intentionally.
Agreed, I've been playing my Blair Digital chanter, I've found my technique has deteriorated somewhat, likely because you can't "feel" the notes, I should bust out my trusty McCallum PC
I have a few more review videos in the pipeline first, but after that, I'll get back to the Basics series here and make a runny fingers video. Thanks for commenting!
I bought a bag pipe for my husband and the only sound it comes out so far is like something very annoying, it doesn't even sound like a bag pipe. Do you think there is something wrong with it?
I bought a cane reed and started like a block of wood with a pinhole... water and a bit of sanding I got a squeal but I'm not even at the point of a "crow" yet Sound normal? I'd love to see you "break" a reed video .. 👍on the 1000
Some reeds are just too tough.... I may buy like 3 reeds, one at each strength (easy, med, hard) and test them live on camera and see how they play and what can be done to bring them in (if anything)
I know this sounds crazy, but i like certain crossing noises and use them intentionally as a grace note. But it only works with certain crossing noises.
Sometimes really knowing how to make the mistake can help you make sure it doesn't happen the rest of the time. Pretty sure this applies to more than jusy bagpiping....
Matt, thank you for this excellent exercise. I really appreciate it.

I hope so too!

Glad you found the channel and found the video helpful! Over 230 videos here, so feel free to look around. Cheers!

I hope you find success with my technique here!
I like the distinction you made between runs and crossing noises.

another great exercise, thanks and was that Luke that popped in?
Close! Obi-Wan had to say hi.
Can you go over breathing techniques?
For clarification, are you curious about steady blowing on the pipes? If so, yes, I have a video in the works!

Looking forward to the video on "Runny fingers"... That seems to be more of a problem for me than crossing noises!

Would love to know what program he uses to score the exercises
Finale is the program I use. Pricy, and not specifically designed for pipe
music, but gives the best looking results.
@@MattWillisBagpiper cool thanks, will have a look at it

Do you know the brand of pipes? Does he have a practice chanter yet?
@@MattWillisBagpiper I don't. And I don't think he does.
i've always having crossing noise or runs when doing low G strike from B.
A video on fixing runny fingers is in the works!
@@MattWillisBagpiper ... just checking in on the “runny fingers” lesson... I have a “runny D Throw” 😢. As always... thanks for your leadership. 👍

If they're intentional, then I'd call them gracenotes, and not crossing noises. :)
Why does my Reeves and my bagpipe sound like a dying duck
Very interesting. Kind of reversed engineering
