    Comparing Atlas to a Greek "god" when he's named after a Titan who was overthrown by the Olympians during a bloody conflict seemed shitty. Then I thought CoHo probably just looked around her study to find an item to name him after and couldn't rationalize naming him "essential oils", so she went with "atlas" instead.

    as an abuse victim, i despise colleen hoover. but also, as an abuse victim, the "he still has the good qualities i fell in love with" and "Its hard to remember why i left because I dont see that side of him anymore" is so real. I was shocked she actually wrote something real, something I feel all the time. That kind of mental gymnastics is sadly so common in abuse victims once you're out of the relationship. If there was a twist where Atlas turned out to be a massive coke-head, Lily's store went out of business and she actually became a factory worker after moving and getting a protected identity to stay safe from Ryle and there was a 40 year time jump to where she is still single, broke and happily greeting her grandchildren because she DID break the cycle and her daughter found an actually lovely man and a job she enjoys and Lily was like "this was totally worth all the sacrifices, I had to focus on us and I gave you the very best life I could" I'd take my hat of to Coho but my hope is wilting like a delicate flower that Lily couldn't be bothered to water

  • @itzmemaddy03
    @itzmemaddy03 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +78

    I hated this book. I read it in a day and I hated everything about it. I hated how easy it was for Lily to move on and start a new relationship with little to no triggers, I hated how easy it was for Ryle to let her go. I hated how easy it was for Atlas to adopt his brother.
    Lily could’ve been by herself with her daughter navigating how to move on from Ryle and Atlas could’ve helped her without taking away how difficult those situations are.
    Sorry, I haven’t even watched yet but this damn book gets me sooooo heated.

    • @amandapanda5087
      @amandapanda5087 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I hated that too. If I were in Lily's shoes a new relationship would be the last thing on my mind. Especially with a new baby from your abusive ex-husband, with whom you're coparenting. Besides of her mother-daughter relationship with Emerson, her only 'relationship' should be with a licensed therapist--but all CoHo characters are allergic to therapy, aside from the teenage wannabe variety.
      Instead of getting into a romantic relationship, Lily should have maintained a friendship with Atlas: "After Ryle, I'm just not in the best place for anything more, Atlas. I don't know when I will be, to be perfectly honest, and I'm sorry. And now I have Emerson, and she's my first priority. I have to focus on her." Then she should have started going to therapy. Atlas would have waited for Lily, I imagine, and maybe after a time-skip they'd have started tentatively exploring more romantic territory, without said romance being front and center-- more of a subplot.
      The book would be called It Starts With Us because it's not about Lily's and Atlas's beginning, but Lily's and Emerson's-- a fresh start to their life separate from Ryle. CoHo could have even quoted the title like she did in IEWU, at the end of the book or even as Lily's attempting a romantic relationship again:
      I smile down at Emerson, enraptured by the colorful book about animal sounds Atlas brought her as a gift. She's gripping it possessively, her little fingers white at the knuckles. She'll be a force to reckon with as she gets older, holding on so tight to what she wants and never letting go.
      Atlas follows my gaze and grins. "Good luck trying to take that away from her. She'll throw a fit."
      I laugh, and Emmy lifts her eyes from the black-and-white cat with a speech bubble above its head. The 'Meow!' inside it is bright purple, Emmy's favorite color.
      She's looking at me with wide, expectant eyes, waiting for me to tell her what made me laugh so she can join in on the fun.
      Rather than explain, I simply point to the freckled sun in the corner of the board page. The sunglasses do look a little goofy.
      Atlas is watching the interaction with a soft smile. I can feel the warmth of it, as if his grin is the sun in Emerson's book. It feels so different from Ryle's smile when he knows I'm not looking. There's no prickle of anxiety or subconcious fear.
      I look at Atlas. "I'm not asking you to wait forever. I just..." I drop my gaze to my lap, unsure how to continue. "You know what happened. You saw it."
      Atlas's face tightens in anger and his fists clench at his sides, though he tries to hide them from my view. It's hard not to see Ryle in that moment.
      Atlas notes the look on my face and relaxes his hands. His eyes fill with remorse. "Sorry. I just hate what he did to you." He sighs. "I know, Lily. I'm not proposing to you tonight or anything. I'll wait as long as you need me to."
      "Even if it's forever?" I ask hesitantly.
      Atlas nods and reaches for my hand, guaging my reaction as he does. I smile at him reassuringly and he gently laces our fingers together. I squeeze his hand.
      "This is just a new beginning to our story," I confess. "I used to think it began all those years ago..." I pause, those early memories filling my head. "But now I see that wasn't quite right. It didn't start with you and me. It starts with us."
      With my free hand I stroke Emerson's hair. She looks up at the touch. I nod at the book, at the sheep on the next page. "Baaa," I say, making Emmy giggle. It's a happy, carefree sound.
      I hope she laughs like that forever.

    “You can’t have your daughter overnight until she can talk so she can tell me if you hurt her” really sells the idea that this cycle of abuse is broken. 🙄
    Also, minor gripe, but CoHo’s perfect world involves all women getting married but we hardly ever see a wedding on page? She can’t be arsed to actually put in that level of effort and it’s actually baffling to me. If there’s anything romance girlies would probably love to read about, it’s the lead couple having a fun/interesting/beautiful/dramatic wedding.

    Regarding the custody plot point, a common trend in custody battles is that the man is more likely to get custody if he fights for it, even if the woman accuses him of being abusive. Despite the popular claim that courts are biased towards women, they’re actually extremely biased against them, and Lily could have potentially lost custody of Emerson if she let it fully play out

      Yup! Most of the time the mom can't work full time because she doesn't have childcare, but dad's mom is willing to babysit for free so he can work and grandma ends up doing most of the actual childcare. But if moms mom does that it's bad and she's being irresponsible or something

The kids were traumatized. The dad was traumatized. The mom died without anyone ever figuring out how to help her. Even my dad has nightmares about his aunt. Only the judge was probably fine. Probably still secure in his belief that fathers are just incapable of providing a loving home for their children.

    Ugh Ryle is the WORST, he's absolutely insufferable. Atlas is no prince but he DID punch Ryle in the face that one time. So that makes him the best character in this 🤣
    .....also what's with the "chicken barabadoula meat"?? That felt....weird 👀
    ETA: I changed my mind, Theo is actually the best character. The rest of the book should be Theo roasting every single other character and then driving away on his 13 yo sized motorcycle 😎🛵

    • @NoelleTakestheSky

      Not weird at all. It’s not like babies jump right from breastmilk to solids. The World Health Organization actually recommends breastfeeding for at least two years. I let my daughter self-wean, and she stopped at 5y3mo. I know a LOT of women who went until at least a year or two. Babies can usually gum on soft french fries, which are like slightly formed mashed potatoes by 6-8 months. Hate to give CoHo credit for anything, but that’s accurate.

    To be slightly fair about the opening note, if someone didn’t know about the series and just sees it in a book shop, I could see them getting books called ‘it ends with us’ and ‘it starts with us’ mixed up. Like idk if she put it in her other series and genuinely has no faith in her audience, but when the sequel’s title sounds like it could be the start of the story I don’t think it’s too bad of an idea to make it clear it’s the second book

So if people keep hearing these names, and see the brand in the wild, there'll be an Association there. I quite like it; it ensures my favourite TH-camrs have reliable sponsors

  • @vincentvangogh815
    @vincentvangogh815 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I hate CoHo so much for gaslight readers into believing that Lily can't keep Riley from her baby life. In real life I would never presure victims into pressing charges or anything they aren't comfortable with that. BUT Hoover's books aren't realistic depiction of life nor of all aspects of complexity of victimhood. This book one is about 23 years old girl who own her own super duper successful business, and which live circles around one rich guy with two restaurants and the other rich guy who is the most sucesful neurologist despite being 29. Her storytelling is never relatable, it is fantasy, maybe even romatisation of pathological circumstances. I completely don't understand why she doesn't write Lily setting example on how to stand up for herself and idealized respond from people around like doctors, police, her friend and mother. It your writing is fantasy keep it a good fantasy.
