My 1970 Fender Tinline Telecaster fits all the boxes...I can switch from jazz to blues ...rock ..latino ...and country picking without changing the guitar....priceless!...
.but nothing like a well broken in archtop for that "mature wood sound"
Great topic. I have tried and enjoyed different hollow bodies like Gibson,Gretsch,etc,which are good. And dont underestimate the Rickenbacker 330 as an all-round great guitar. But imho, when it comes down to the one guitar to rule them all- its the Telecaster- Thanks JH!
Great video! After having a Gibson prototype, I lean to the ES335. My Gibson ES Artist Prototype is a do all guitar. However it is too heavy to work with. I now use a Godin 5th Avenue and a Glarry Strat copy that has the front and middle pickup wires in phase, like a very wide humbucker. You are exactly right .....its the way you play. Also archtops do get more compliments! Please keep up the great work!

I have transitioned from an archtop (Ibanez SJ300) to a Gibson ES335 (2020 Dot). The 335 is a charm. It is so flexible. Plus I am now running it through a Fender GTX 100 amp. It is a modeling amp so I can tweak the sound and tone ad infinitum. But a comment on tone. Yes, it is in your fingers. However, your picks, strings, string gauge, and amp also affect the sound and tone.
Oh yes. I have a Les Paul Classic as well. Another flexible guitar. However, though small, it is HEAVY!

Hi Jamie; great, thoughtful video as always! I love your books as well. I can make any guitar sound terrible, but I find that anything with a PAF-type neck pickup works well for me for jazz tone. Maybe you could discuss pickups at some point?

Hi Jamie, very interesting video. What about the differences with the neck and the scale length of the guitar? I think this is a generally underestimated topic, maybe due to the web bias, since we can hear the sound, but we cannot feel the differences between different instruments.
I'm finding the archtop and the 335 more accommodating when it comes to finger style playing. My solid body guitar is just awkward unless I'm using a pick. As for sound I'm happy with all of them. They just have different character.

Hey Jamie... I'm awful at playing whatever style you can imagine, but I need to have an archtop, a semihollow and a tele... ;-). Interesting video that will support my dysfunction in the coming years.. apart from b***hits, I think that an archtop sound is unmatched for jazz as a semi hollow is for blues but it is strongly related to what you are used to listen.. take care. Every day I want to get rid of my Les Paul. It’s crazy heavy, and there are so many great guitars out there that don’t kill my back. Then I plug it in, and I think, “no way I’m ever getting rid of this”. The embarrassment is my playing.
I gave up on Les Pauls years ago mostly due to the weight factor. But they had another downside for me-the sound. That thick meaty tone gets lost in most band situations I've been in. An ash-bodied Telecaster is my long-time go-to guitar. Much lighter, easier to play, and better sounding than any LP I've owned. Plus it stays in tune much better.
Regarding your comment about people saying, "That guitar sounds really nice" when you play an archtop, I'm sure you've heard the story of a fan coming up to Chet Atkins and telling him, "That guitar sounds really nice" whereupon Chet put the guitar in it's stand and said, "How's it sound now?"

Hi Jamie, Thanks for your Jazz lessons. I’m a recent convert through your Autumn Leaves lessons. I have an ES335 style, a Les Paul style and recently bought a Tele Thinline style guitar. Although I like all of them, I’m finding that I tend to gravitate towards the Tele most often, mainly because of the comfort factor. It’s just the right size and weight for me and just lets me play. Tone wise, I can dial in any tone I want from my modelling amp. I’m not a purist… mainly learning. 👍🦘
