Hi Justin, I have seen many covers of this song using a 12 string guitar. Does that cover the two guitar parts, or just add some depth to a single guitar cover?
Hi Justin, respect and appreciate yourself, and the channel.... But, when Tom is playing this, he's using all down strums, and only using his wrist movement. Not swinging his arm at the elbow. And he uses an FM7 chord shape, but keeping his pinky fretting finger on the high "e" string throughout the song. Easy, and smooth transition to the C chord as you pointed out. The Am is perfect. But he sus4's the G chord in rhythm as he strums. These aspects I have found from studying live shows, and film from live shows. All the best to you Justin, as you are a tremendous reference on TH-cam, and I think your channel is one of the best available. Be well, and happy holidays to your family and yourself.
Justin is by far one of the better teachers available. He’s always mindful of his role as a guide. He’s very disciplined (rarely rambles) and seems to never abruptly dart off doing some showy thing on the fretboard that I see nearly every other teacher (especially Tomo Fujita, Marty Schwartz) do which has nothing to with the lesson at hand and is nothing but distraction-and frankly doing that just indicates the teacher is bored, unfocused and somewhat selfish. I think Justin’s dedication to his work is why the excellent Tommy Emmanuel gives Justin his stamp of approval.
Like so many, Justin had been a huge influence on my guitar journey. I’ve played everyday since January 1st (with the exception of just 5 days) thanks to this man and his incredible tutorials. Thank you Justin. I can play the guitar because of you and I will be forever indebted.
Loving the Dogs' contribution, I'm so glad you didn't edit it out! As I said recently, the vocals have really moved up a notch and add a lot to the overall effect. I'm just getting to the point where I can sometimes sing along so it gives me hope to see how much you have improved.
I started seriously on guitar a few years ago with this channel and a few others. Now my tab list has 233 songs in rotation and I'd rather leave my left leg behind than my lil martin. Its been a life changing experience. I feel like I could live happy under a bridge as long as I had music
Fantastic work Justin. Loving the down up strumming pattern displayed on the screen. Makes it so much easier. Earlier videos I had to keep pausing and rewinding to write down the strumming patterns.
Love this song, thanks for sharing this with us. You are the best guitar teacher on TH-cam. If you can't feel it you'll never play it. Love seeing your furry kid, take care of yourself and your family and stay safe Justin. From Charlie in the States.
Love the lesson, love the Tom(looking forward to more (Confusion Wheel?!)), love the humanity of it. They don't have to be clinical to be great. Thank you Justin!
If you have a 12-string Rickenbacker...the capo part would be nice for that. Great lesson. Good dog. Don't worry...we like your dog! Woof Woof...Learning to Fly!
My wife loved the dog and the rug, me: loved this lesson as I do most of them ( not your fault Justin, just me being hopeless on guitar ) Merry Xmas from Australia
Fantastic. I suggest this getting smoothly between chords: I don't hear the high e-string in the recording. If you just plat the inner 4 strings A-D-G-B, keeping the index down on the B string for all but the G chord, I think you get something like the signature sound. That and as you demonstrated well, the consistent strumming.Your lessons are gold - I will become a paid subscriber shortly.
Great lesson for a great song! I have been trying to play Learning to Fly for almost 30 years and always thought to myself, "this seems like it should be easy, but something is missing." You really captured Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' genius in this song -- the mastercrafts of timing and precision. (See also the "perfect cup of coffee" story by Warren Zanes.) The 2nd guitar on capo gives this song the sound of a whole symphony of strings. Thanks for giving me new insights on one of my all-time favorite songs. Can't wait to see your other Tom Petty lessons coming up.
Hey Justin! So Cool that you can still make light of your faux pas (OMG! Thin Pick) and I can laugh along with you! Not taking this stuff so seriously all the time is key. Granted there is a time for that but it's all about having FUN as well! Thank You for what you do all these years Sir!
Great job man..I've learnt absolutely loads of stuff from watching you..I rarely comment..but you my friend deserve a good comment. Loved that...I'm playing catch up at the moment..been in hospital for a long time. All fixed now...take care

Thanks Justin another brilliant insight how to chill out and just enjoy playing, Tom Petty always a favourite of mine, love your dog stealing a bit of limelight.👍👍
Oh my gosh Justin your ontro video was dynamite!!! 👏👏💗💗💗 Love it whenever we get to see Ziggy... even if he/she does present a challenge to you and recording!! 😅 I really appreciate your lessons... I've used many this past first year of learning guitar... you make them very approachable but yet still show the parts that allow us to challenge ourselves!! Many many thanks for all you do!!! 💝
Thanks Justin very cool lesson and something I struggle with is the strum timing when it's chords changes on up beats and not so straight so this will be very helpful and also a cool song too.
I swear by the Nylon Dunlop .88mm…smooth…can hardly hear the pick hitting the strings, plus has grip. On electric I use the Dunlop Hetfield wolf picks 1mm

@@MultiAxisDiscipline If you look at the title it says "Easy Guitar Lesson" - sus4, Fm7 and a drone string are not for beginners...
Singing Justin appearing in the middle of the twin Justins was a good touch. The more Justins the better !!

Thanks Justin,. Not only did I get a great lesson to a beautiful Tom Petty song, but I also got to meet you wonderful dog.
I figured the dog swiped your capo! Mine run off with my picks and clipon tuners.
Love how the second guitar part works with the first. Thank you Justin
Fantastic. Looking forward to hearing more Petty. Big thanks

Agreed great song…hell, Tom never made a bad song
Great vid. Love Ziggy.
His voice is amazing.
Happy with any appearance of Ziggy!
Liked that you did not edit out the capo missing, the dog, and you forgetting the chords. Have a nice day!!
💙 Ziggy 😍 Thanks a lot Justin for all your lessons, pure gold 🙏

Sounds fantastic. I'll be onto this tomorrow. 🙏
Have fun!
Other songs with that steady mechanical strum are CCR "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" or Lennon style on "All My Loving"
Wow. Three Justins is too much power for one video to hold.
That was awesome plus your dog, priceless!! You taught me , wish you were here. One of the greatest songs ever. Thank you 😊
I love how you said hello to Ziggy!

Loved the way you have sung !!
This track, and Face in the Crowd, are great examples of Tom's right hand technique. It's a straight up metronome.
Yep

What make and model is that guitar? It sounds amazing?
I prefer the live version where he leaves his pinky on the 3rd feet of the high e-string for all the chords (without the capo)
