I would say equipping ourselves with general knowledge would help increase language proficiency, because being familiar to one specific field (e.g. health/ medicine) would also mean we know the specific terms or phrases that are special to that field (e.g. pharmaceutical, cardiologists etc). This means the candidate will then can use these terms in their speaking as ‘high-level’ words/ vocabulary. Besides that, knowing how things work (e.g. how healthcare system works) can help candidates to provide substantial and logical ideas in presentation and discussion.
