As for the flak you get about cranking them over with the starter, running them without water, or doing things how you do them because you've been successful doing it your way for years, it's easy for us sitting on our sofa with a laptop to be a Monday morning quarterback. But you're out there doing it--bringing these relics back to life. Everyone has an opinion about how to do things "right", but let the critics drag something home and get a stone cold engine that hasn't run in Noah's lifetime cough back to life--oh and then make a video of themselves doing it. Until that happens, those of us who watch rather than do, should just sit, watch, listen, and learn.

I had a 1972 Chevy van straight 6 3 on a tree. One winter the water pump and radiator cracked wide open. I drove that van every day for a year to work in back. 1 mile each way. With no coolant at all. The straight Chevy straight six is a very tolerant engine
Jonathan back in 75 & 76 I drove an old blue Apache like this one to high school every day! It was an ex farm truck so it was a little crusty but I liked it anyway. It brought back good memories seeing you get this one running! Thanks for the video!

Personally I would keep the longbed. Having a shortbed 3100 is definitely worth more, but I’ve tried hauling some things that simply just don’t fit in a shortbed. If I could choose now I might go with a longbed for capability, shortbed for easier maneuverability. Whichever way you go with I’m sure it will turn out great. Nice video
Kids and young adults thinking they know everything is not new. What is new, is that they think looking things up on a smart phone or computer makes them smart...it does not. People who have experience will always know more than those who have none. I think I finally convinced my son to stop thinking about what he wants to say or what he thinks he knows, and listen to what's being said and watch what's being done. He can't take in and absorb any information when his mouth is always running.
I have a brother 22 years younger than me. He knows everything according to him and his friends. My younger brothers mouth is always open and his brain is NEVER in gear.

Noah is a fellow that works for me on the weekends and after school. Don't mind a bit you calling him my son, just wanted to let you know. Noah's grandfather is known very well for chopped tops, making convertibles from 4 doors to factory correct appearance and a lot of 4 door to 2 door conversions. His dad is also a mechanic and body man. I have been friends with his grandfather since long before Noah was born.

If someone wanted a sport truck and not a truck to haul they want a short bed. I don't like short beds my '89 F150 is made to haul and the 8 ft bed is an asset a short bed to me isn't. Its great that you got that engine to fire even though it definitely has issues. Thanks for the fun video.

I always hated those potbelly carbs. I was into 60's gmc pick ups. Found huge tuning and economy with a '70 Nova Rochester Monojet. Super tunable and reliable. Different bolt pattern and linkage but worth it! Thanx for all the great pix and great insight into real American Life. Long live automobiles.

As someone who deals with lots of 4x8 materials, plywood, masonite, MDF, chip board, what have you... I LOVE a long bed! My fairly used (150,000 miles) 2006 Silverado with the extended cab and 8 foot bed I bought off a local appliance repair guy is the best thing I ever bought, upgrading from a Toyota compact pickup. You can drop a whole sheet of plywood in the back and it fits flat on the floor. I understand why short beds are more in demand but gimme my long bed!

Old mopar trick use a straight plug wire & a 318 water pump 3/8 bolt put the plug wire end on the bolt for starting plugs in the head I have one in my tool box for over 42 yrs I can not live without one. Works on any from hemi to lawnmower
On this one you can hear the engine getting grinded up inside. Probably didn't put any lube in the cylinders. It is like honing out the dry cylinders and pistons. 😫🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have a 58 gmc pickup with a 270. When I tried to start it I bent a push rod cause the valves were stuck. Pulled the head off lapped the valves cleaned everything up. Started fine after that.
Once the rockers are adjusted It may slow down the smoke or stop It altogether. I have the same motor In my 55 4 door 210. It does the same thing because 2 of the lifters have collapsed and I haven't replaced them yet. Nice job on getting the old girl running. It sounds good even with the noisy rockers.

Last time we had an engine that hadn't run in quite a while we removed the plugs, squirted some oil in the cylinders and then with the valve cover off cranked it a bit while we watched the valves. Without the spark plugs in it the battery can turn the engine over quickly and if you don't have an oil pressure gauge then you can see that you have oil pressure when you see the oil as it lubes the rockers.
👍 for small a block. We had a State stop us years and years ago and wondered if we thought we were crop dusters. Hahaha but that old 54 ford got us everywhere we wanted to go. Lol

Jonathan, I would love it if you tried adjusting the valves on the straight six and adding a can of Engine Restore. I would like to see if that brings the performance back. Several on you tube have used it successfully.
I was surprised the vacuum advance still worked. I use two stroke fuel mix to start engines that have sat a long time and have low compression. The two cycle oil really helps lube the rings up. Sounds ok other than a little valve clatter. I think by 59 all 235.5's had hydraulic valve lifters, so some might be sticky. Sad, but those heavy old straight six's really have no value, so a V-8 might be a good idea to stuff into it. When I say heavy, they weigh more than the 348 big block W motor in my 59 Bel Air.

You ever put one on the wheel lift, put it in 3rd gear and pull the plugs, and pull it down the road to circulate some oil and loosen things up? I don't have a wrecker but I have pulled a lot of them around the yard with my tractor like that.
I see your point. Shortbeds do sell better. Myself I like shortbeds. If the motor is junk then I say go for it. But knowing that it's you doing it. I know it will be done right. Look forward to the outcome.
I learned everything I know about Chevys from my daddy we started a 32 Chevy with that same inline 6 motor they've been putting them in Chevy's since 1931, Jonathan wasn't letting the starter smoke and you can start any motor without water in it I wouldn't take off driving across country the modern LS motors made to run an hour without water
I know you don't like starting fluid but what i do is spay wd 40 or some type of thin lubricant into a bottle similar to what you use and then i spay the starting fluid into smae bottle yes they both are a liquid but once you shake them they mix well and I've had great luck doing that.
Chevy six is a brute. And to think we used to rev them up and poor cold water in them to decarb them! Never had a motor I didn't care of well that my buddies were eager to have!
Well they say that even a blind squirrel finds a acorn once in a while so with a quick ream of the cylinders and some brake fluid around the rings, she just may come to life. V8's are popular and the short box will get more money so if you have a can of paint then you can give it a jewish overhaul. Once it picks up some compression and you go out and run the carbon out of it, It will be the first one the block to sell for more than the cost. Dangle some airfreadhners off the mirror and it sell. Split the manifold and glass packs with some old exhaust for stacks like back in the day and it will be the new shop truck like you really need another one of those. It really sounds good. Good luck and start the 41 next please. I love you guys work and I don't have a nickle in none of it but my mouth gets me in trouble. Appreciate the explanation, again, about restarting an engine that has sat for a long time. Not my normal thing so even though I heard you the first time, was still a little fuzzy on some of it. Probably remember it now though. Hopefully. May claim a senior moment if needed. Now about the Nash, OH NO! I like that car for some reason. Hope you can save it.
I find with some motors that have been sitting a while, taking the plugs out and giving a squirt of oil down each bore. It boosts the compression a bit and also gives some lube to the upper cylinder and rings. Smokes like a train for the first minute or so but gives me some peace of mind.
Jonathan, Stacy David has a great demonstration on how to shorten a long bed to a short bed. Check out Stacy David's gears. Maybe you've already seen it but if not check it out. The way he does it, it leaves the strength in it so it won't come apart. Just wanted to let you know.
Them 235's are great little engines!! All you gotta do is change the oil and add 1 quart of automatic trans. oil in with the fresh oil, clean all of the electrical connections, clean the fuel pump, tank, and carburetor add coolant and this old Apache will be a runner once again. The resistor is there to drop the voltage to 6volts after you drop the starter out the coil is 12volt but they do get hot running for a long time so dropping the voltage it will run cooler, also This limits the coil causing flickering lights and static noise to radio.

It takes my big block Chevy hot rod 15 minutes to get up to temp, absolutely no problem running for a few minutes without water.

You ever put one on the wheel lift, put it in 3rd gear and pull the plugs, and pull it down the road to circulate some oil and loosen things up? I don't have a wrecker but I have pulled a lot of them around the yard with my tractor like that.

I learned everything I know about Chevys from my daddy we started a 32 Chevy with that same inline 6 motor they've been putting them in Chevy's since 1931, Jonathan wasn't letting the starter smoke and you can start any motor without water in it I wouldn't take off driving across country the modern LS motors made to run an hour without water

just a sugegestion mixa bit of two stroke oil in the gas you are pouring in it might help seal the rings a bit faster . keep up the great vidieos .
I know you don't like starting fluid but what i do is spay wd 40 or some type of thin lubricant into a bottle similar to what you use and then i spay the starting fluid into smae bottle yes they both are a liquid but once you shake them they mix well and I've had great luck doing that.
Chevy six is a brute. And to think we used to rev them up and poor cold water in them to decarb them! Never had a motor I didn't care of well that my buddies were eager to have!

Well they say that even a blind squirrel finds a acorn once in a while so with a quick ream of the cylinders and some brake fluid around the rings, she just may come to life. V8's are popular and the short box will get more money so if you have a can of paint then you can give it a jewish overhaul. Once it picks up some compression and you go out and run the carbon out of it, It will be the first one the block to sell for more than the cost. Dangle some airfreadhners off the mirror and it sell. Split the manifold and glass packs with some old exhaust for stacks like back in the day and it will be the new shop truck like you really need another one of those. It really sounds good. Good luck and start the 41 next please. I love you guys work and I don't have a nickle in none of it but my mouth gets me in trouble. I am surprised that you don't have s circle track for tow starting them GREAT VIDEO GUYS
On my truck I put Marvel's Mystery Oil in each cylinder to get the ring oiled up mine set for 10 years it started up on the third try nice video
Appreciate the explanation, again, about restarting an engine that has sat for a long time. Not my normal thing so even though I heard you the first time, was still a little fuzzy on some of it. Probably remember it now though. Hopefully. May claim a senior moment if needed.

I find with some motors that have been sitting a while, taking the plugs out and giving a squirt of oil down each bore. It boosts the compression a bit and also gives some lube to the upper cylinder and rings. Smokes like a train for the first minute or so but gives me some peace of mind.

Two stroke in the gasoline makes it harder to start as it doesn't atomize as easily
Jonathan, Stacy David has a great demonstration on how to shorten a long bed to a short bed. Check out Stacy David's gears. Maybe you've already seen it but if not check it out. The way he does it, it leaves the strength in it so it won't come apart. Just wanted to let you know.
Them 235's are great little engines!! All you gotta do is change the oil and add 1 quart of automatic trans. oil in with the fresh oil, clean all of the electrical connections, clean the fuel pump, tank, and carburetor add coolant and this old Apache will be a runner once again. Great job Jon.

I had one like that for several years I'd drive around some, to work and back now and then, had the 235 in it
we used to pull start some of the ones with low compression

The resistor is there to drop the voltage to 6volts after you drop the starter out the coil is 12volt but they do get hot running for a long time so dropping the voltage it will run cooler, also This limits the coil causing flickering lights and static noise to radio.
