Thanks to the success of other Italian sides in Europe this season, Torino are still in the hunt for a place in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa Conference League following an important 2-1 at Verona last weekend. They face the difficult task of having to pick up enough points against two top-five clubs to climb into eighth place, but recent form on that front has been encouraging.
They continue to fight hard despite the imminent departure of manager Ivan Jurić, who after the win over Verona despaired about the “splits and divisions” within the organisation. A pair of 0-0 draws to top-four sides Bologna and Juventus amongst their last three home outings should give Torino’s players belief that they can handle AC Milan, even if they left supporters underwhelmed with four scoreless draws across their last five home outings!
Further to that, the Stadio Olimpico di Torino has been one of AC Milan’s least successful venues in recent years, with the Rossoneri winning just one of their last ten visits (D6, L3). However, the one omen in their favour is that the sole victory in that sequence came in May 2021 (7-0) on the way to finishing second behind arch-rivals Inter - drawing parallels as that’s where they’ll finish this season.
That’s despite winning only one of their last five Serie A matches (D3, L1), though they did at least end a six-match winless run across all competitions by thumping Cagliari 5-1 at the weekend. A disappointing end to the season is perhaps why manager Stefano Pioli told media last Saturday that he still does not yet know whether he’ll continue on at the club in 2024/25, though guiding Milan to 80 points for just the second time in their last 13 seasons could go a long way towards some favourable negotiations.
Players to watch: Four of Antonio Sanabria’s five Serie A goals this season came in home victories, so Torino will hope he can hand Milan further misery. Three of Christian Pulisic’s 12 league goals for the Rossoneri this season came via a brace against Cagliari last round as well as the opening goal of the reverse H2H.
Hot streak: Torino have failed to score before half-time in each of their last eight Serie A home games.
