Takes me back to 2014, the Summer of Joan, when I saw her live several times in the UK, including Hebden Bridge Trades Club, a tiny venue (HB and the club featured in the BBC's Happy Valley) where, to my eternal regret, I walked past Joan without recognising her, chilling in the doorway with her band. I also paid for a festival ticket just to see her play - drove all the way there (from Manchester to Skipton, North Yorkshire) to watch her and the band play in a tent, partially drowned out by some loud rave type music from the adjoining tent. As soon as they finished, I jumped in my car and drove home again. I didn't really enjoy the collaboration album she did in 2016, and last year's Damned Devotion took a lot of listening to before giving up its gifts, but I saw her in Brooklyn (launching the album) and in Manchester. Next month I'm catching her at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music - no band, but casting a new light on the songs with a solo show.
Love JAPW. She's the best.
She got me rightaway when I heard 'Christobel'! Been a fan ever since; she's got "that" for me. Love!
Love this lady! So talented, blew me away when saw she and band on Jools. Hopoing to see her live...whaoo!
Saw her live at Rough Trade recently - Just her and a piano or guitar (depending on song), did 2/3rds of her new album - Brilliant!
Me too.
Never tire of listing to this
