I started you Happy Helper last year, and it is wonderful!!!!! In years past, I tried class jobs, but it was too much, and I’d just quit never change them. Thank you!
I teach 4th grade, and classroom jobs work great for us. They all have jobs that are actually helpful to me, and they keep the same jobs for a whole month. This saves me time, and they learn how to do their jobs really well. We do jobs the last 10 minutes of every day, and the kids are very good at knowing what they need to do and getting it done.
Great video, but I could have written this comment. I've refined the jobs down to the ones I know they enjoy and feel are worth their time. I make them apply on Google Forms and have gotten down a system for swiping through their forms and assigning them quickly each month. Everyone in class gets one with the exception of the "on vacation" person! Ha.
I stopped classroom jobs early on for my 3rd graders. I’m now retired. What I did was draw a new name each week. That person did EVERYTHING. Line leader, class monitor if I had to step out, passed out papers, answered the door. It worked SO well for me and they loved doing everything for a whole week.
I love this idea! Happy helper made my stress level go down BIG time! No more changing job charts every week. Thanks for sharing this idea in such an entertaining way!
Crazy because I already do the exact thing in my class. I used to do multiple jobs and your little skit was too accurate! Now I do one teacher’s helper each day. I just have my kids names on index cards and flip to a new kid each day.
I change my jobs every two weeks and my students get paid to do their jobs. If they are absent or don’t do them, they don’t get paid. The money my students earn links with my math curriculum and my students buy treats instead of getting something from a prize box. It is all how you manage it.
This was very helpful, thank you! I teach 6th grade and have had all the same issues with trying to keep up with jobs, charts, training, etc. This year, I wanted to make it simple! I think I will label our helper as the 'Student of the Week' and give them some extra privileges too. Another thing that I thought was brilliant is that they can choose a helper if they don't want to do a job. I get a lot of that at this age (and attitudes as well.) I really think this will help!!!
I have always hated classroom jobs for all the reasons described here. Early on, I opted for only one helper, but I do one per week. I will try out a happy helper per day this year!
Hallelujah! I could never remember who had what job and by the time I got the child’s attention to turn off the lights, it would have been easier for me to just do it.
So true. I spent more time trying to remember and then I’d forget and then there was confusion and then…. We’ll you know it’s not worth it. Sometimes I’d pair Happy Helper with Student Of The Day. It worked great.
I agree and many teachers don't understand why I don't like the traditional way. I like having two helpers (one boy and one girl) and team captains for their teams (sorta like table captains)
My 3rd grade students use to rotate to the next job each week so everyone knew what they were going to do and no one was surprised. They also like that everyone clearly rotated through the jobs no one liked.
We call it “Teacher Jr.” and it works amazingly with first graders because they’re younger. The older grade levels may be able to handle the list of jobs independently so it’s easier for them. For us first grade teachers, this is THE best method to use! 🎉😊 I also, after the first 6-8 weeks will use descriptors of who is the teacher junior of the day by saying, “ This student has a brother, this student has brown hair, 2 syllables in their first name, etc.” This way they’re using the process of elimination to figure out who it is. We pull craft sticks out of a small bucket and I’m the only one who knows who it is. Later, I let students describe the clues! ☺️
Wow!! So many nuggets of teacher tips in your comment. I love your tips about using descriptors for revealing the next Teacher Junior. I bet the kids love it. Teaching at its best. 💕
Thank you!! I taught preschool for many years and this was so much easier. I tried giving out multiple jobs one year when teaching in primary and I would always forget to change them each week!😂
It’s important to do what’s required. However, if the opportunity arises, build a case about why you’d like to try something different. Show them this video and ask them if they have any objections to building classroom/student independence and accountability in a way that makes the child feel special and seen. Maybe you can pilot the new way for one month and then report back the results.
I completely disagree with you. Not all students need a job, you don’t need a fancy chart, I keep my student jobs for 2 weeks and keep a checklist of who does what job, and the students doing jobs for me actually help me a lot. You need to do some reflection.
What you say is valid and what the OP presented is equally valid. Different systems work for different people. I suggest you view others from a strength based approach.
Yes. What works for one person might feel odd and uncomfortable to another. One of the most important things is to be authentic in your classroom. If it doesn’t work don’t feel like you have to do it just because everyone else is doing it. That’s how “jobs” felt for me. I’m glad to see the different ideas. That’s how we learn and come up with new fresh ideas. It’s ok when people “completely disagree “ with me. Being in public education for 25 years it gave me a lot of practice with people not liking my opinion. It kinda makes me chuckle a bit. It’s honestly what makes what I’m doing now feel that much more important (and fun).
you spent 5 minutes trying to convince me why jobs are bad and totally lost me with all the wigs and charcters, educators don't have time to watch skits. Didn't stick around to the end...
I started you Happy Helper last year, and it is wonderful!!!!! In years past, I tried class jobs, but it was too much, and I’d just quit never change them. Thank you!
Yahooooo. Thanks for sharing your success. I’m glad it’s working for you. 💕

It sounds like you and your 4th graders love classroom jobs. Thanks for sharing your experience and success.

This is a super cute idea. @@edwardsinedu978
I'm teaching fourth grade this fall, and am going to try this! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I always use classroom jobs too! One of the jobs is to change them each afternoon. It works great after we have learned all the jobs together.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It was liberating for me.

You’re very welcome. And I’m glad you enjoyed the little reenactment. 🙂

I really liked this system in my classroom. It was way easier for me. I love the index card idea. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like your method works great for you. I bet your students love to buy their treats.
I just found your channel. Wow, I love all your ideas. Keep them coming ❤️
Thank you. I hope you find tons of useful ideas. 😀. Thank you for the encouragement. 💕
This cracked me up! So fun but so helpful. I'm required to do use a job system but will definitely look into using this instead!
Glad you liked it. Sometimes you just have to find the humor. Good luck with teaching.

At your level they really can take on a “co-teacher” role. I’m so glad you found this content useful. Enjoy those 6th graders.
Yipee! Starting my Happy Helper today! Thanks!
Awesome. I know you and your students will love it.

One each week works too. I liked one each day just because it was easier for them to wait 20 days instead of 20 weeks. 🙂

Cool! I love that. Any time kids can practice being a leader, is amazing.

I just found this video, and it is amazing! Thank you so much for this idea!
I’m glad you found this video. I’m even more glad you found it useful. 😀
LOVE THIS! i will do it because I have a very small class and this would work so well for me!
I glad you found something for your classroom.
Fast forward to 5.06 for the solution and skip the fluff
Good tip. Some people have told me they laughed out loud at minute 2:00.
I enjoyed the whole video.
Thank you!! I taught preschool for many years and this was so much easier. I tried giving out multiple jobs one year when teaching in primary and I would always forget to change them each week!😂
There’s so much to remember to do. With this system the kids pretty much kept track for me. Yahoo. 😀. Thanks for watching and commenting. 💕
Brilliant!!!
I’m glad you found it useful.
Girl….you are so helpful and hilarious 😀
I get that a lot. Lol. Thanks for watching.
I love this! I have a teacher helper that does most things!
Teacher helpers are the best.
I love this idea! Thank you!
I’m glad you liked it.
Does the Happy Helper works with first graders?
It will work great with first grade. 🙂
Love this! Thank you!
So glad you found it useful.
Excellenr video
I’m glad it was helpful.
Weather reporter😂😂😂
So many kids… so many jobs. 😂
Thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome. I’m so glad it was helpful.
Love it! except the laminating part 😬
You’re right. We all have our own do’s and don’ts.
We have to our mentor will write us up if we don't :/

That would be a great way to approach this. Jobs are also suggested when we have challenging behaviors. I love the idea of a helper for the day
I love you!!! Mustache
I’m so glad you are finding some nuggets of goodness.

Sorry it wasn’t for you. 😞
