The Ratha Yatra of Puri, also rendered as the Ratha Jatra is considered the oldest and largest Hindu chariot festival celebrated annually, on the bright half of the lunar month of Ashadh (June-July).The festival is held at the city of Puri, in the state of Odisha, India and associated with the deity Jagannath (a form of Vishnu or Krishna).[1] During the festival, three deities (Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra) are drawn by a multitude of devotees in three massive, wooden chariots on bada danda (the grand avenue) to Gundicha Temple whereby they reside there for a week and then return to the Jagnannath temple
On the way, the chariot of Jagannatha, Nandighosa waits near the crematorium of Bhakta Salabega a Muslim devotee, to pay him tribute.
On their way back from the Gundicha Temple, the three deities stop for a while near the Mausi Maa Temple (Aunt's abode) and have an offering of the Poda Pitha, which is a special type of pancake supposed to be the deity's favourite. After a stay of seven days, the deities return to their abode.
Descriptions of the Ratha Yatra can be found in Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, the Skanda Purana, and the Kapila Samhita.[4] Records of the festival have been noted by European travelers since the 13th century, with the most prominent and vivid descriptions noted in the 17th century
भगवान जगन्नाथ की यात्रा क्यों निकाली जाती है?
पद्म पुराण के अनुसार, भगवान जगन्नाथ की बहन ने एक बार नगर देखने की इच्छा जताई. तब जगन्नाथ और बलभद्र अपनी लाडली बहन सुभद्रा को रथ पर बैठाकर नगर दिखाने निकल पड़े. इस दौरान वे मौसी के घर गुंडिचा भी गए और यहां सात दिन ठहरे. तभी से जगन्नाथ यात्रा निकालने की परंपरा चली आ रही है.

जगन्नाथ पूरी रथ यात्रा की कहानी ( Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra Story)- कुछ लोग का मानना है कि कृष्ण की बहन सुभद्रा अपने मायके आती है, और अपने भाइयों से नगर भ्रमण करने की इच्छा व्यक्त करती है, तब कृष्ण बलराम, सुभद्रा के साथ रथ में सवार होकर नगर घुमने जाते है, इसी के बाद से रथ यात्रा का पर्व शुरू हुआ.
