Nick what a awesome video of the car! I cant thank you enough for all the work you have done on it. I couldn't be happier and your passion and attention to detail proves that I sent the Roadrunner to the right man/shop! I never for one minute was worried about the car being in your capable hands. Please don't say your sorry on how long you have had it I understand as I too have been waiting for parts on other cars and its frustrating beyond belief but these are the times. Cant wait to receive it and go for a long drive. Again thank you and please thank everyone who worked on the car too. George you put together one hell of a video! thank you!

One thing about Melbourne is that you can have 4 seasons in 1 day, so you get to give your wardrobe a work out.

@@NicksGarage yeah nick love the shot of the secondaries. But I noticed something I see the secondary rods flexing. My question is if they are replaced with a stiffer rod linkage you think it would improve throttle response?
@@Jon-O. - Both outer carb.s are opened by two vacuum pots... the linkage rod is just to keep them synchronized with each other and make sure they close when he lets off...

This car has a huge gas guzzling engine, crappy brakes. lousy suspension & wayward steering & skinny tires in other words it looks good but it's junk. LOL

A good friend that I have not seen in 50 years taught me to drive a standard shift auto in 1968. The vehicle was a 1968 Road runner with a 383 and a 4 speed. We spent about an hour practicing in the parking lot of Simi Valley High school in Ventura County CA. I though I had it down, time to go home. We get about half the way home, stop at a red light, a Ventura County Sheriff pulls up behind me at the red light. No problem I had my learner's permit my buddy had his license. I did get nervous though. I stalled the car twice, I was determined to make the third time a charm. I laid rubber all the way through the intersection, right in front of the cop. I did get pulled over. My buddy says to the cop "he is just learning" and the cop says "that's obvious" and lets me go, no ticket.
There are two aircraft. Both carry the A12 designation. One was a attack aircraft that never made it out of the mock up stage before it was canceled. The second became the SR-21 Mach 3+ reconnaissance aircraft. Seems fitting.
Finally a man that knows how to drive a muscle car!!

Hi Nick, I am a Mopar man. I drove a 2000 Dodge Dakota R/T 59L for years but always had issues with fuel delivery. I never got around to fixing the problem due to health issues. I have since moved to Thailand and gave my R/T to my daughter. Anyway, Nick, love your vlogs. Once a Mopar Man always a Mopar Man. I hope one day you will have a Dodge R/T in your shop, they are an awesome truck.

The Road Runner was my favorite car when I was a kid. I still remember the commercials on TV. I liked them mainly because Roadrunner cartoons were my favorite cartoons. I was 11 years 0ld when that car was built. I remember seeing a lot of them on the road!
I have always believed that the ultimate example of a factory musclecar is the 1969 1/2 A12 cars. No compromises with these things.

Nick you’re so right. These cars we meant to be driven hard. I owned a ‘68 RR that I purchased for $800 in ‘73, 383 with a 4-speed trans. No power steering no power brakes. I power shifted that car unmercifully! Busted several shifting forks and went through many clutches. Ha a ton of fun with it. Just like you had fun driving that gorgeous’69. Sold it for a ‘71 Challenger 440 six pack and had even more fun!
Looks good, sounds good, plenty fast and not a bunch of fluff. Over 50 years old and still one of the toughest, best looking cars ever built.
My friend bought one new. It was triple black. It was a track car. But he used it to street race on Woodard avenue in Michigan in1969

I owned an R/T Challenger for several years back in the early 70's, My car had an engine transplanted from a totaled AAR Cuda, 340 6 Pak with the Slap-Stick. I dumped all 6 barrels on a regular basis but it took until today, that I actually got to watch the way it moved! LOL

I had a70 Challenger R/T 440 six pack back 4 speed in high school (1984). Never could get it to run good . Nobody knew how to set up carbs. Ran a Holley double pump 4 barrel set up and it ran great ! Fastest car in school then , ran 13.64 @ 105. All stock !

My dad is 87 years old. He said they didn't have a tach to tell what the idle speed of a car after a tune up. He said he used to look at the fan blade and see how it was spinning. The fan blade on that car was smooth and in tune. First time I saw how the outboard carbs opened up. NICE. That car was made to drive and have fun. Loved this video.

This is brings me back 35 years ago when a friend of mine had a '71 Roadrunner with a 440 six pack , 4 speed gear box. Everytime he opened up all the carbs , felt like we were going into otter orbit , was a ultimate experience , love your channel !
In 1982 I purchased the identical car in Bahama Yellow, $750 bucks at age 17. How sweet to revisit all those sensations and sounds in the drive video! I can't believe how my body has stored that memory like it was yesterday....... Thanks Tim and Nick

About the sticking secondaries:
Back in the day, Mopar Performance knew about the problem and published tech papers on how to correct the intermittent sticking.
Disassemble the outer carbs, remove the throttle plates and shafts and polish up the bores with 400 and 600 grit paper. Do this until you don’t hear a “pop” when manually opening the throttle plates.
I get very nervous when I give my keys to a mechanic to do something on my car. When I comes to Nick and his crew, I would happily hand Nick my keys knowing that my car is the most capable hands. That is the best compliment I can give Nick and his crew and I think in this day and age, that means EVERYTHING! Nick, you are the BEST!!! Special shout out to Cameraman George for catching the 6 Pack not working properly! Amazing teamwork! The A12 Roadrunner is AWESOME!!

Makes me miss my '68 Charger. You cannot beat the sheer exhilaration of a 440, an 833 with Hurst shifter, and manual steering.
Idea for future dyno test on six-pack 440: Run the 440 on the middle carb only, then compare that dyno figure to running all three carbs.

Wow. This is the type of tuning I grew up with. I keep my 1980 Monte to remember the experiences my uncle and I shared. He enjoyed seeing my eyes lite up, interest and knowledge grow. Hated when I didn't take his recommended selection of parts. No laptops, just grit, assortment of tools, ears and seat of the pants shifting👖🤣 excitement galore...
Hi guys, nice to finally see you George!! You and Nick and the lady ( Sorry I forget her name), all make a great team I love this show. Beautiful ride, I'm 73, always loved mopars, I remember these cars like it is yesterday, and I'm 18 and enjoying life owning several muscle cars during my single years. Now, I'm doing ok, having had covid-19, in hospital, recovered, had my two shots, and feeling fine. Keep up the great work, you have the best car show ever, I love it!!!

I'm died-in-the-wool, 100% GM all the way, but Nick has opened my eyes to what I've ignored in my 59 years behind the wheel! Right up there w/so many of my GM cravings, are MoPar's '68 Charger & '69 1/2 A12 Roadrunner! W/what Chrysler offered in performance from the factory in the peak muscle car era, it's continuing to surprise me how GM was able to hold its head above water in the industry-wide quest for street dominance.
GM had a whopping 52% of the market in those days and development money the other car companies couldn't even dream of! All the other companies put together shared the other 48%. Govt. told GM to sell fewer cars or get broken up as a monopoly. Buyers simply preferred GM products...
She's a real beauty, Nick. Reminds me of my old 73 Charger 440 I had when I was in my early 20's. Man, I wish I'd never got rid of that car!
My mother in law used to have a neighbor who was a huge mopar guy. He found a really special one of these in a salvage yard. It had been cheaply repainted and when he got it only had the body sans drivetrain but it was straight and no rust as far as I could see. He eventually restored it but I wasn’t around by then to see it finished but I always checked it out when he was out working on it with his son. I’m more a Ford guy but I still love Chevys and Mopar cars. I’ll never forget that road runner and how stoked they were once they got the results back on the vin and stuff. Don’t know the specifics but it was a real special variant that someone had made into just an old regular grocery getter. Hope it’s still out there being loved and driven.

i stated when this car came into the shop months ago that it really reminded me of my satellite. well it still holds true. while not a road runner, i had a 69 satellite (4 door of all things) in that "forrest green" or baby puke green (what i called it), but such an unforgettable car. i cant remember the ladys name but i remember the story for my car. bought new in 69, her name was "Libb"(the car). right before wanting to trade her in, in about 73, the husband died and the car became the wifes car and driven really only to church. in 1993 i got libb, after cleaning her up and getting her running right i went to las vegas (nellis, air force base). i had issues with the sun ruining the vinyl top and neighbor kids shooting out the windshield, but eventually had to let her go in 2008, due to having a family. there hasent been a day since i sold mine that i really wish i had'nt. Road runner, GTX or Satellite this body style is one of the best mopars made. watching this video really makes me wish i didnt, to many memories of better days gone by. anyway nick thanks for keeping these beauties up and running.

Coming from a 440+6 owner, I remember the Hemicuda vs. GSX Stage 1 "shoot-out" at Napierville back in the summer of 1993. I was rooting for the 'Cuda, but even though Nick and his brother''s beautiful green Hemicuda lost that shootout, Nick was still ever the gentleman about it.
LR. I brought a stone stock Hemicuda, while the Buick was a fixed up sleeper. That is the reason why we did not run for best of 3. We only ran it once only. Many told me that the Buick was a racer, not stone stock like my Cuda.
@@nickpanaritis4122 Larry here. Wow! Thanks, Nick! I happened to be there that day with a friend and we heard that Buick GSX idle and it was very smooth. Even an old Q-jet carb and cast iron intake. I didn't know that a Buick "sleeper" could even be built to outrun one of your fine Hemis. Maybe it was a Nick's Garage built Buick!

@@nickpanaritis4122 It was crazy, Nick! We were eating at Lafleur's Restaurant and the 1993 Editor of that old magazine Muscle Car Review was at the next table. He said that his name was Barry Kluczyk (sp?). We heard him talking about coming up here to cover some Hemi vs. GSX race the next day at Napierville, so we asked him all about it. He said that he'd carefully inspected the GSX that morning and it looked and sounded "bone stock" (his words). When we asked him about the Hemi, he laughed and said that the street talk was that it was a Ray Barton engine and it would probably blow that Buick into the weeds. HaHa. Sounded pretty serious. Of course, we know it was really a famous Nick's Garage Hemi instead!

I was happily reminded of the time I had a road runner.
Mine was the 383 version and it turned out be pretty special.
Every once in awhile you hear a story about a car that came from the factory but it was just better than the average. When I worked at a Chrysler assembly plant I was near where cars were placed on rollers to run them through the gears and make sure everything worked. We built 55-60 cars/hour so that came to 440-480 per eight hour shift. About every three or four months there would be one on the rollers that just plain sounded so much more powerful than the average. It would scream up to the 60 mph mark where the tester was supposed to verify the speedometer. One time a sport fury with the 440 did that and it was an employee car that would become a legend. After he got it broke in gently, he learned it was definitely quicker than the average Fury. Even though it was heavier it could beat a 440 GTX. Unheard of.
Well, my road runner must have had something special about it. On recommendation by a friend, I took it to a guy who had raced cars. Drag cars, circuit racers, so he had an ear for engines. He took my distributor out of the engine and put it on a Sun machine. We found out it had dual points! He changed the weights, the springs and put it back in the engine. Then he rejetted the carburetor and installed a high flow filter. He told me to take it for a ride and let him know how it felt. I swear that engine felt like it had another 35 HP!
It had the four speed trans and a 3.23 sure grip axle. It was so quick I was beating other road runners by 8-10 car lengths on our 1/4 mile road outside of town.
Some GTX cars showed up and thought they would beat me. I had gotten really good at getting a good start off the line. None of the GTX could beat me at the 1/4 mile mark. One was gaining but he was about 4 car lengths behind. Don't know what would have happened if we could keep running we had to shut down where the road ended. After I learned how to safely power shift into second gear, I was beating them by an even greater margin. They accused me of having a higher lift cam, LOL.
If I remember correctly, shifting at 5,000 rpm it would do 40 in first, 70 in second, 95 in third and I don't know in fourth. The speedo was down below the end where I couldn't read it. On cement, if I held the gas pedal to the floor, run it up to 5,000, and do a power shift by pushing the clutch in, shift to second, and slide foot off the clutch it would make a noise like a car hitting me from behind and throw down ten feet of rubber with both tires.
That car was wickedly fast for its engine size. never should have let it go, but I loved that 1968 Charger body style so I traded the runner in for bright red charger with black vinyl roof and interior. Loved that car. It was not as fast as the runner but it was a lot more comfortable.

A young man I went to HS with had a '69 Roadrunner with a factory built 383/4 spd combo, man that car was fun! We grew up in Oregon, it's amazing how many hot rods there were/ARE in rural towns! I-5 was a great place to test our cars back then, hhehe.

I loved my '70 RR. I screwed up and sold it during the '79 gas crisis. It came with a 383 and a 727, bright orange. I had freshened it up with a beefed up and balanced bottom end, torker manifold, crane fireball cam, unilight dist, holley 650 double pumper, 3 angle valve job and a set of headers. I'm sure there were faster cars on the street but not by much, how I didn't kill myself still makes me wonder. Of all the cars I have owned, this is the one I wish I still had. You guys that owned one of the early RRs know what I mean.

The 69 roadrunner is still my favorite mopar. 1978 I was 16 years old and a junior in high school and I drove a B5 blue 69 roadrunner 2 door post car. Power nothing.. Armstrong steering , 4 speed and 4 wheel drum brakes. 383 was swapped for a 68 440 HP motor. I still miss that car. Sold it in 81.

Nick, I have a 70 V-code Roadrunner and I bought it from a "muscle car dealer" but the outboard carbs weren't opening on the test drive or for the first few days I drove it around home. God, what is that thing worth? 100K ? 120k? More. When I was a kid, 17 in 1985 ... you would see these old muscle cars sitting around rusting, parked in a backyard somewhere. I partially grew up in Topeka Kansas and a guy off of Fairlawn and 21st had a dark green A12 Roadrunner in his driveway ... for years. You would see it there year after year just sitting .. a good decade then, it was suddenly gone sometime in the 90's I noticed. It honesty may have not been an A12 but I do remember the car was original and marked as a 6 Pack on the hood. Also, in 1989 I went to Sacramento California off and on with a friend of mine who was dating a girl there and near her apartments was a 1970 Roadrunner, lime green. I asked the owner about the car a few times and he said he wanted $7500 ... I was going on 21 and didn't have any where near that kind of money. It was rust free, and an automatic 383 which I think was a base model.
The 440 6barrel Road Runner is my all time FAVORITE car! Beautiful work Nick.
Another excellent episode of Nick's Garage. Thank you so very much Nick, George and (in this episode) Tim for sharing with us all. 1969 and a half Plymouth Road Runner A12 package road test was great. Nick starts with his S.O.P. (standard operating procedure) and puts half a tank of fresh fuel in it. Petro-Canda 94. Period correct Firestone "skinnies" all around are nice for the car-show, however real rubber would have been nice to see. Especially on I-440. Camera work was very cool George. SIX-BARREL W.O.T. cam was pure awesomeness. Brought back many good memories. So did the sound of the 4-speed and the gear. Keep up the good work gentlemen.

if you have never owned or driven one of these cars, take it from me in that they can
be quite squirrelly and when they get out of shape, they get out of shape in a *hurry*.
What you're seeing Nick do here is NOT as easy as it looks - the man knows what he's
doing, simply put.
*NICK* - the Porterfield drum brakes have been on my GTX ("Fred") for a a little while
now and I've run the car through the bedding-in process.

Remembering that 1962 Galaxy with the 406 Tri Power and the best sounding cam Ford ever made .You could sit and listen to the sound of that engine all day long . A friend had a red 1970 Challenger with the same engine and it really came to life with a fresh set of plugs .

Fantastic video! Nothing beats the sound of a 440 wide open. You need to make a small bumper sticker: "Road Tested by Nicks Garage". If this was my car I would put that sticker on the glove box!
Beautiful RR. I am going on 27 yrs with my '69 RR, same engine, same colors. I have a '71 340 Duster as well. Enjoy you show Nick, I am the class of 1974 also !

Nick - I had 1969 440 GTX with a 750 holly on it . Shame you didn't get to open the six pack from 2nd gear to third gear for a bit . This is when the real Mopar power peaked . Everyone I used the drag race said they never saw a car fly past them so fast in third gear ! RAW POWER MAN !!

Years ago, we used to take the air cleaner cover and turn it upside down so we could hear the secondaries open on the 4 BBL. We still had the air filters in the unit so, we felt there was no harm done and the sound of those 4 BBL. opening was just a cats meow at the time!!!

I just purchased a 1968 Road Runner and being a BOP guy I just had to have one of these baby’s for my collection, mine has the 440 also and the guy I purchased it from built it and raced it. If I told you what I pd for it I’d be arrested for grand larceny. I understand why Mopar guys are so crazy for these cars.
got a 91 Dodge Dakota truck Standard bed and cab. I pulled out of a junkyard for cheap back in 2005. I has manual steering, manual shift, manual everything. A little crusty from being in the rust belt. But I Love the truck. Been slowly restoring it and keeping it preserved to last another 35 years, maybe longer. Keeping it Factory. Even the factory lousy less than 19 miles a gallon for a 4 cylinder! Just like it came from the factory.

ANOTHER WELL DONE VIDEO/JOB/ FUN EXPERIENCE...(After High School I worked with Alan Cheney...he had a 66 GTO 4 SPEED 6 PACK...421HO HEADS N CAM ON A 389...SO FUN TO DRIVE...300' 1ST GEAR BURN OUTS...We both worked Graveyard @ a Chevron Dealer 24 hour gas station on Hiway 99 in Stockton, CA...WHOOOHOOO...TY ALAN...NICK...YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

This video reminded me of a ride I had in a work mates R/T CHARGER and when he floord it those tripple carbs.
It wheel spun in top gear.what a beast they are.
You definitely need one of those route 440 signs to hang up on the wall of your shop!!!!! Putting the cameras on the engine is great, you can really hear the atmosphere being gulped in when the 6 bbls open up! Awesome! thanks again guys!

My neighbor across the street used to have a 71 roadrunner, 6 pack and you can tell when the 2 auxiliary carbs are working or not working. When everything is working and those 2 carbs kick in what a rush-ride nothing like it, it puts you right in the back of the seat👍👍👍👍😜😜👌
