KÖNIGSWINTER - Drachenfels (The castled crag of Drachenfels)

- Einer der wohl sagenumwobensten Plätze in Nord-Rhein-Westfalen ist der Drachenfels in Königswinter, der auch einer meiner persönlichen Lieblingsplätze ist. Nicht nur, weil hier angeblich Siegfried den Drachen Fafnir aus der Nibelungensage erschlagen und in dessen Blut gebadet haben soll, sondern auch wegen der wunderbaren Aussicht auf dem Rhein, wenn man den Aufstieg erst einmal geschafft hat. Den kann man sich erleichtern bei einer Fahrt mit der Drachenfelsbahn, eine Zahnradbahn, die schon seit 1883 betrieben wird. Auf halber Strecke findet man die 1913 erbaute Nibelungenhalle, in der Gemälde von Hermann Hendrich ausgestellt sind, die die Geschichte der Nibelungensage erzählen.
Daran angegliedert befindet sich eine Höhle mit einem 13 Meter langen Drachen und ein Reptilien-Zoo. Unterhalb der Drachenburg befindet sich ein kleines Felsenmeer aus Trachyt-Steinen, für das der Drachenfels bekannt geworden ist insbesondere weil dieses Gestein auch für den Bau des Kölner Doms verwendet wurde. An der Hügelspitze angelangt trifft man auf die Ruine der Burg Drachenfels, von der man die Sicht auf das Siebengebirge und den Rhein geniessen kann.
Da es sehr viele Eindrücke und Bilder vom Drachenfels gibt habe ich mir erlaubt diesen Ausflug in zwei Teilen zu zeigen. In der nächsten Woche gibt es einen ausführlicheren Blick auf die Drachenburg, die ebenfalls auf dem Drachenfels steht...
One of the most legendary places in North Rhine-Westphalia is the Drachenfels in Königswinter, which is also one of my favorite places. Not only because this is supposed to be where Siegfried may have killed the dragon Fafnir of the Nibelungen saga and bathed in its blood, but also because of wonderful Rhine views when you've made the climb. This may be facilitated by a trip with the Drachenfels Railway, a cogwheel train, which has already been operated since 1883.
Halfway we find the Nibelungen Hall, built in 1913, with paintings by Hermann Hendrich which tell the story of the Nibelungen saga. Affiliated with it, a cave with a 13 meters-long stone dragon and a reptile park. Beneath the Dragon Castle is a small rocky sea of trachyte stones, the Drachenfels is especially known for this rock which was used for the construction of the Cologne Cathedral. Arriving at the top of the hill we encounter the ruins of Castle Drachenfels, wherefrom we can enjoy the view of the Seven Mountains and the Rhine.
As there are so many images and impressions of the Drachenfels I filmed my trip in two parts. Next week there will be a more detailed look at Castle Drachenburg, which is on the way up to the Drachenfels ..
