One Hour Song Challenge (While Depressed) [Discussing My Mental Health Battles]

  • This week, I wanted to change it up. I've been having a rough mental health week so I thought it would be beneficial to be open and honest about my battle with Bipolar Type 2. Since this is a production channel, I thought it was only fair to still make a track while I chat about it. I dive into how I balance work with my mood and fluctuations, how I maintain habits even when I'm not feeling great, and why sometimes you just have to power through a low point, even when it's tough.

My biggest piece of advice as someone who used to deal with extreme anxiety and depressed episodes, is don't fight it. Allow yourself to feel this way and welcome the feelings. You'll find the less you try to escape and resist and fight them, the sooner they'll pass. When you sweep it under the carpet, it piles up and up until you finally deal with all of it. Feeling sad is part of life, I think depression often comes from now allowing the sadness to be there and so it gets stuck there. You are a very loved and appreciated person, thanks for doing what you do

This video is absolutely huge because we actually get to see your workflow. What shortcuts you use, how you add plugins, how you find a tempo to work with, how you experiment, how you pick samples and presets, how you group/submix, which of the gazillion ways of doing things in Cubase you actually use
Been waiting for this for a while - stellar content
    Much love

Thanks for making this video and being so transparent! In regards to your music theory thing at 7:18
Your 2nd chord there is a G7 which is a dominant chord of C minor which is the relative minor key you’re in! We get there by using the harmonic minor scale of C and raising the 7th degree of the C minor scale from Bb to B natural, creating a leading tone into the C minor chord! ❤❤❤
Basically just a secondary dominant chord leading you to your C minor! ❤️

From the comments below its obvious we are a few that struggles with issues of mental health from time to time... thank God we have music! Music is such beautiful therapy.. Even though we may not have the power to create all the time, we can always listen to music, and get inspired and powerful again. Love your openess, and let me tell you that youre always an inspiration for me when i need to pass some threshold of uninspiration... thank you! At least we know from experience that we'll get energy again so keep fighting Austin! Love!

Thank you for sharing this-I truly appreciate it. As someone who has battled depression myself, I can deeply relate. In my twenties, when I signed with a major label (publishing), I felt as though the world was at my feet. That experience initially fueled my creativity, but as I gained insight into the realities of the music industry, I became increasingly aware of my own mental health struggles. I lost sight of why I was making music in the first place and gradually spiraled into a dark place.
Now, nearly two decades later-married, a parent of two, holding a stable job, and receiving treatment through therapy and medication-I have finally reconnected with what music truly means to me. It is no longer about chasing a number-one hit but rather about expressing and processing my emotions. In hindsight, I realize that being signed at that stage in my life was perhaps not the right path for me, and I have come to terms with the fact that the industry itself may not align with who I am. However, music is far more than just a business; it is an art, a form of healing, and a deeply personal journey.
To anyone struggling with mental health challenges-know that progress is possible. Keep going. You will find your way.
    🙏

16:00 literally so therapeutic to know I'm not the only one who feels that (clinically diagnosed depression instead of Bipolar but still the same affect on work stuff)
the hard part is when you talk to people who are not creative freelancers they go too far in either direction. it's either "whelp suck it up and get back to work" which leads to burnout, or "OHMYGOSH you need to give yourself a week off" which leads to me apathetically sitting around doing nothing. it's such a weird balance of "I need to be a healthy person and slow down" and "the healthiest thing for a fish to do is keep swimming"
thanks for making this video brother

    • @hey_maurice
      @hey_maurice 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

"Keep swimming" is definitely the move. I've realized it's better to think of things in terms of speed instead of simply "taking time off". Just slowing down/decreasing the scale of your deliverables is a huge mental shift and can make a world of difference.

I havnt watched the full video yet, just wanna say thanks for opening up. ♥️
If you dont mind me sharing my personal experience. And i say this out of love.
When I was dealing with depression It got so bad I had to go to a clinic. When I was there, after the first chat I had with my therapist, she bluntly told me: "everything you are telling me is bullshit, but we will love you untill you love yourself"
It was tough but it was true. I learned that I have alot of behavioural issues that are unnecessary and are keeping me "sick".
By sharing this i truely hope to help.
Much love bro, get well soon ❤

We understand you so well, Austin. Thank for all your hard and great work over the last few years. You inspire us to produce music better and better with your nice Ideas and professional tutorials. But nothing is so important as your health. To much work destroys your creativity and your users understand it, when you need a little Break. We ca😢n wait!!! And sometime is it shit to work alone, on so much work. Take a break, a vacation, and jam music with friends, have fun without a deadline or a product behind. I wish you a good recovery. Sorry for my terrible english, kind regards from a german follower. 🫶

Naval once said: „At some point you either have to become a saint or have kids, you need something in your life that you love more than yourself.“
Not sure how you and Miranda see the kids thing (I think you‘d be a great dad!), but to me and many others watching you you‘re one hell of a saint, blessing us with your amazing content.

Don't know whether I have a genetic predisposition for the bipolar from dad, or just the nurture of being brought up by someone who's struggled with it, but I definitely struggle myself with the highs followed by the lows. Austin, you have no idea how much your work has shaped my path. You were the reason I even started producing, and now I’m making a tracks for movies , artists and what ever else comes to my mind that I would love to bring to life . But beyond that, you’ve been a source of consistent motivation and education as well , in an industry that can feel overwhelming, and your transparency in this video hit home.
As someone battling my own struggles (Myasthenia Gravis, chronic fatigue, and the weight of pushing forward when my body and mind say otherwise), I know that feeling of just trying to hold on through the waves. Music has been my anchor too-sometimes the thing that saves me, sometimes the thing I have to fight to keep loving when everything feels heavy. But creators like you remind me why I keep going.
The fact that you showed up, even when you were struggling, says everything about your resilience. You don’t just teach music-you remind people like me that it's okay to be human, to have lows, and to still find beauty in the process. Your impact is massive, Austin. More than you'll ever know. Keep creating, keep being you, and know that your work isn’t just about production-it’s about giving people like me the courage to keep chasing the dream despite the chaos.I have been thinking of starting making videos on this journey ....

Austin, this might sound cheesy but dude, you really are exceptional at what you do, everything you make on this channel sounds phenomenal, you inspire a whole community and make so many people happy. I don't view you as a "TH-cam producer" , only a serious professional. Being transparent like this is a great thing since we all struggle with the lack of motivation, even questioning if we're any good when we can't create something we like it's cool to see you share this.
Only thing I'd suggest when there's a lack of dopamine to fuel the creative side, walking outside on a sunny day, eating fruit or veggies, seeing an inspiring film or reading an inspiring book, listening to new genres, maybe spending time with a pet too could help regulate the natural dopaminergic release in the brain.

Thanks for being real and transparent. In a world of so much fake stuff it's refreshing to find some authenticity. Don't give up doing what you are doing.

We are all here for you, man. I definitely struggle with mental health as well. I think a lot of us do but you have sincerely changed all of our lives (The Channel Regulars) and taught us things that we couldn't find anywhere else in a way that no one else could. That pressure you spoke about is real and intense but just know that you could wear a snuggy and show up in a terrible mood every day and we would still be supporting. Put YOU first.

This honestly is completely relatable on the mental health aspect and anyone’s career for that matter. Videos like this should be created more often - I love transparency around creators I follow and it really helps when I can relate to that person. I love all your content and this video was just as enjoyable, and also educational, despite in a different way. Thanks Austin

Clicked on the video firstly because you and your channel are amazing. Secondly I’ve been struggling the last few weeks as well. Social Anxiety/Chronic Depression over here. This is inspiring Austin as someone who has mental health issues and admires your work this really hits home and give me a boost understanding how you deal and plus being more open in trying a new format as well to help with similar issues. Thanks for being you and bringing us all together with music and knowledge.

I really loved this video! Creating music, although very fun, can be draining and creativity sometimes just takes time to flow again. I adore your videos and all the knowledge and amazing music production techniques you share! I've been having my own personal battle with producing music and have had to really work at it to be where I am now but your videos have helped me so much! You're such a talent Austin, it's okay if you're. not feeling inspired recently, it always comes back! Thank you for the amazing things you do!

I’ve learned so much from your videos. You have such a great ear and great taste. Thanks for sharing so much for free. That being said, this is probably my favorite video. Thank you for sharing about yourself and what it’s like with the waves of inspiration- definitely very relatable on the burnout and hyper focus dichotomy for myself.
But also really loved you sharing the unpolished process of how you create stuff- that’s actually the coolest component about you showing the behind the scenes stuff.
Anyway, continue taking care of yourself and just know your worth is greater than your productivity and art. Much love man.

I like this video. I'm kind of similar: When I'm in my 'normal' space, I feel groovy. As in, my melodic ideas are stumbling over each other to get out into the world. I have to discipline myself in order to sing or whistle them into my phone, if I'm out walking. Which is when I harvest most new ideas. Then back home, I boot up Logic and transfer the day's harvest, bam! three hours disappear, melting into good work, hopefully a song I'm currently working on has come a solid step further along.
Oh yes, and then there're those other days, the other side of the coin. On *those* days, I'll do all the other stuff: Streamlining my workspace, shopping food for the fridge, vacuuming, washing clothes, etc.
Usually the next day, I'm back in the pocket, all groovy again. These days, only rarely will the blue period last longer. (because I'm overall better at taking care of myself.)
Totally agree with you on routines being the way to handle it. Example: do physical movement even if I'm not in the mood, then just do a less inspired version, nobody but me keeping track of what I do gym-wise -- and in a day or two I'm back to inspired. So I've learned not to let depressive moods get me down -- so to speak.
BTW, it makes me smile that you seemed to be less-than satified with the track you made. I really like it and found my inner juskebox starting its topline engine all on its own. I hear your track as moody and on the cusp of blue, but still in the air -- actually yummy.

We all have our ups and downs. It's like a sine wave. Unfortunately for some the amplitude (of the down) is bigger then for most people.
I don't know if it's any consolation, but your video somehow gave me inspiration for a track. The music you produced together with your conversation topic helped me unexpectedly.
    Many thanks for that! 🫶

We appreciate everything you do Austin, I know the exact feeling where the weight of the world feels as if it’s holding you down, and to actually get up and create a video like this while feeling that way is truly inspiring. those who know, know how hard something like that can be when you’re in one of those rough patches.
Ive been feeling a bit down myself lately & haven’t felt inspired enough or had the energy to make a song in a while and this really motivated & inspired me to keep grinding so thank you for helping me & for continuing to inspire me in many other ways.
you are truly making a difference in the world & in so many people’s lives more than you could even know. Definitely a legend in mine & so many other people’s books. I hope you’re feeling a bit better since recording this, much love!

Was super happy to see this in my inbox today :) I've been feeling super lonely and depressed recently, to the point where I find it difficult TO socialise and work on the things I like and that can feel so isolating no matter how much you tell yourself other people also sometimes feel the same way. It was super insightful to see this and hear what you had to say, and I also think it's really important to share. You're super inspirational and an incredibly hard worker Austin, can't wait to see what comes out of 2025!

Austin, I’d love to see a video from you talking about maybe your routine, and how you structure your day and mindset to stay disciplined with work and TH-cam commitments. I think that insight could be really valuable to a lot of us.

Bravo my man! As you said all of us creatives can suffer from the darkness - but that is also our source of genius. One thing I’ve found is that sometimes the energy to pickup and hit my studio and create is just not there. Say what you will about AI but on those days where I just lie in bed I F around with lyrics and song styles in Suno and it’s a totally low energy way to still feel inspired and maybe get some new ideas. Like I’ve got a friend in the room. The best when you get that chill from a new line that sometimes help me break through the darkness. Keep fighting and appreciate your openness on this topic. Much love
