The notion of Peter merely “opening the doors to the kingdom” IS precisely Peter carrying out his duty as the first and chief Christian priest (let alone bishop or Pope) by administering the sacraments which Christ himself instituted. And also, by Christ changing Simon’s name to “rock” (literally in the same sentence) he was in fact given what we now call “papal authority” to do. Its also interesting how the notion of Peter’s “confession” is what is being proposed here as “the rock” as Baptists don’t have or believe in the sacrament of confession lol. This is how the early and undivided church saw it until over a thousand years after the event itself.
... the sacrament of confession is an admission of one's sins. "Forgive me, male human on earth, for I have sinned..." Curious that this Catholic-made tradition asks people to seek a human for forgiveness over seeking God. Peter, unlike others in the entirety of the passage, confesses - that is, he proclaims, states, declares, admits - that Christ is God. Peter confesses - that is, he proclaims, states, declares, admits - his faith in Jesus. This confession is what Jesus wanted.
@@francisgoin3112 I wonder then what you make of John 20:23, where the risen Jesus tells the Apostles, "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” If the Apostles can forgive sins, that implies that someone must be confessing to them. And note that in the Sacrament of Reconciliation the priest is acting "in persona Christi," that is, in the person of Christ. It is Jesus, not the priest forgiving the sins. The priest is only his instrument. God uses people as his instruments throughout the bible, including the OT prophets, the servants at the wedding feast at Cana, the Apostles for many things, etc.

I disagree. What we must first establish is how Peter's name was Simon. As we all know, names have meaning. Peter, comes from the Greek work "Petros", which literally means rock. So what Christ literally is saying is "You are Rock, and on this rock, i shall build my church". Now, one cannot just rely on my translation, yet historical events to further justify my statement. If we look further on, Peter is well known as the leader of the apostles (after Christ went to heaven). The greatest example is when Christianity spread to non-Jews. Prior to Christianity, the covenant between God and his people was circumcision's. So when it came time to making people into Christians, people debated if men joining the faith had to be circumsized. After debate (at the Council of Jerusalem) Peter was the one who decided it was not required. As he states "baptism was the new circumcision of the heart". We have to also acknowledge that never before has God not given his people a human leader. From Moses, Noah, Abraham, David, etc. Hence it is known that peter was the "man in charge" of Christ's church on earth. Now one could argue that this doesnt mean peter was a pope...and tbh that argument really just denies history. All throughout early chrisitanity, popes are seen. From Pope Damasus I (who authorized what we know today as the bible), to Pope John XXII, (who confirmed the theology of a trinity). When it comes to the keys, this further proves that peter is given authority. Christ speaks many times how God is the master of a home, and how us humans are the servants. It would make sense for the master to give the keys to whoever he leaves in charge. Not as a "you own the place now" rather "you shall look over my house". And like Joshua who took over after Moses, and Ishmael after Abraham, Peter "gave his keys" to another. Hence why the catholic symbol is the keys

My question is, from a Protestant perspective, how does one clearly know what a passage like this means? One pastor may interpret one way and another differently. And this likely varies denomination to denomination. Are the scriptures meant to be somewhat ambiguous and open to interpretation?
The scriptures are not vague, ambitious or open to interpretation. We lean not on out own understanding. The Bible is so perfect and all of it connects perfectly. Just looking at all the other places in the Bible where Jesus is the foundation and it's so 100% consistent. What this guy said in the video is just pure evidence from the Bible. The Catholics can't even show you a Bible verse where the keys are ment to be passed down. Because the Bible only mentions that we can make decisions on earth that have been done in heaven. And Jesus even teaches us to pray for this, "your will be done on earth as it has been done in heaven". Another slight misconception is when Jesus says, "where 2 or more are gathered in my name, there I am with them". People just use this commonly to talk about the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit is different. And can be with you alone. The Holy Spirit is so personal. Anyway I digress on that. Look up the Torah code in the Torah. It will show you just how precise the Bible is.
Keys is explained in Isaiah 22. In that day I will call Elikim, son of Hilkiah. We ask ourselves, why Did Jesus give Peter the 'keys of the kingdom'? ( matt 16:19 ) Could it be because of all jesus apostles Peter revealed to Jesus his 'racist' tendancies which Paul admitted at Gal 2:12. Could have been that our Lord was teaching Peter a lesson? In view of Peter's own words at Acts 10:11-15 when Peter used those 'keys' opening the way for the hated gentiles to become heirs of the kingdom. Thus a temporary priviledge since Jesus himself "Has the keys of 'Hades & death ( Rev 1:18.) Jesus, not Peter is the 'cornerstone of 'The new Jerusalem' ( Kingdom) plus the TWELVE apostles (Rev 21:12) as its foundation.
A good try at the explanation that comes very close to the meaning. However what are the keys of the kingdom -- as explained in scripture? Romans 14:17 “The key in this kingdom is the Holy Spirit” Therefore Jesus explained that “flesh and blood could not have given you this answer” (Peter) received it through the Holy Spirit. And you are Peter and on this Rock I will build my Church. Jesus will build his Church on the Rock, or foundation of truth, which will be revealed by the Holy Spirit. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heave and whatever you loose will be loosened …. Peter through the power of the Holy Spirit had the power to decide what was permissible or forbidden.
Thank you for this message. I've learned the reason Paul wrote 2/3 of The New Testament because Peter left one very important message out but Peter did allow God to humble him obeying The Lord by preaching The Gospel to us Gentiles. You and I broke the law & Jesus paid the fine in full so thats what happened on that Cross, and of course The Jews believe Jesus lived but they don't believe that he rose on that 3rd day defeating death for us all because we all broke the law and Jesus paid the fine in full, the last 3 words Jesus spoke was "It is finished so they denied Jesus' sole purpose of filling The Law. I could be wrong as I've only studied for 3 ½-4 years and as I grow I've noticed my understanding and daily decisions have grew to be mature so I don't want to make that same mistake and holding people back but the one thing that hasn't change in my belief is we all broke the law and Jesus paid the fine in full. Understand why, how and what it looks like to live when knowing I don't deserve His free Gift and our best works is filthy rags to a Holy God so I and everyone else will have to fully depend on Jesus' works that fully filled The Law and there isn't anything left for you nor myself that we can possibly do to fill the law. We are called to allow our lamp to shine on others feet/ paths so they too will understand that very important part, we are called to reflect the light of the world by leading people to Jesus & not to follow ourselves because we are commanded to share our fruits from God which are Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness and last of all is Self Control and if self control came first we would easily be self righteous so let's go make healthy decisions so our lamps may help guide others understanding/ knowledge to the correct path. It takes full maturity to have all The Fruits of God. Amen
I wanted to study and know what The Truth was before running to a Church to be mislead before I knew what I believed because if not I'm only going to believe what that preacher believes if not and I was sick of falling away from Church all throughout my life. I was raised Church of Christ so that played a big part in why I back slid. Its not about how I must stay obedient nor how mature my works are that keeps me saved rather its through the understanding I don't deserve the free gift so my faith is in The Blood of Christ who filled the law completely that paid for me in full. Praise God for loving us first Amen

Honestly excellent interpretation and you’re right. The rock that that Christ is referring to is Mount Hermon at Caesarea Philippi. It was a horrible place where Baal and Pan worship occurred and there’s a cave there that the people in the region knew as “The Gates of Hades/Hell.” This was Christ’s testament and promise that the literal gates of hell will not prevail/withstand his Church that he will build on top of it. The Latin Vulgate really took away from what really was going on. They didn’t know or care about Jesus conquering territorial spirits/demons. It was about authority for Rome.

So, what you are referring to is the same way Jesus asked who do they say He is…and Peter answers through the Holy Spirit…Is the same way that whoever Peter evangelizes and receives the Holy Spirit is assured Heaven (bound in heaven) ??? Right? Predestination then affirmation? As much as Peter was chosen and Jesus kept reconfirming him…Satan still possessed him and he still denied Jesus 3 times. Jesus may have made an example of Peter but Peter sampled our corrupt humanity to the world while his claim that only Jesus saves our eternal souls was evangelized all over the world.
Why don't people examine the original language? Jesus said, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church". Does everyone understand the word-play going on here? In the Greek text, "Peter" is "Petros" (Πέτρος), which is a small stone or pebble in the masculine gender, while this "rock" is "petra" (πέτρᾳ) a large boulder in the feminine gender. So Jesus is LITERALLY saying to Peter, "You are a small (male) pebble, and upon this large (female) boulder I will build my church". The church is obviously NOT built on Peter, and Jesus is NOT in any way "establishing" the papacy here. Secondly, the authority to "bind" and "loose" is given to ALL of the disciples as we see in Matthew 18:18. Yes, Jesus initially told Peter that he has that authority, but we can clearly see that everyone has that authority. "Will have been bound" and "will have been loosed" is something that EVERY believer can declare to a repentant sinner based on what God has already said.
@@xxcrazy-_-moddzzxx_2580 We don't have ANY manuscripts of Jesus speaking Aramaic. The New Testament, including the Gospel of Matthew, was given to us in Greek by the Holy Spirit, so that's all we can use for our examination of what Jesus said.
1) This exegesis takes a hit to it's credibility because it does not mention Isaiah 22:20-22, where God says of Eliakim, "I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one will shut, what he shuts, no one will open." That is the OT ante-type of this piece of scripture. Note that Eliakim's office had successors, as does the papacy. You have not done your homework. 2) If you are going to discuss papal authority, you should pronounce "papal" correctly. The first a is a long a, as in "ate." 3) Whenever God changes someone's name in the bible it is a big deal. Simon-->Peter (rock) is a big deal. 4) You are rock (Peter), and on this rock (your testimony) I will build my church. How you have tortured the scripture to get that interpretation! That form is not consistent with the form of the the preceding verse (Matthew 17) or the succeeding one (19) These three verses go together and share similar structures. 5) Note that starting in verse 21, immediately following this passage, Jesus for the first time speaks of his passion, death, and resurrection. In Matthew 22:16-18 he is basically naming Peter as his earthly successor in anticipation of this. 6) Petra/petros. The age-old question. Jesus spoke in Aramaic, in which "Kepha" is rock. Jesus would have used this word twice, so there's no "big rock" and "little rock" difference In translating that to the Greek. It made no sense to give Peter (I think we can agree he was pretty masculine) a feminine name. So he got called "Petros" in the Greek. And Kepha got translated into the usual "petra" for rock in Greek. 7) There are other scriptural bits that show that Peter was the earthly leader of the Church after Jesus' resurrection, including "Do you love me/feed my sheep," "Satan will sift you (plural, so the apostles) like wheat/Peter, strengthen your brothers," and Peter single-handedly bringing in the net with 153 fishes. 8) If you've made it this far, thank you for reading. I find it unfortunate and a little disingenuous when this scripture in Matthew 16 is presented poorly in such a way that it points away from the validity of the papacy.
tHE CATHOLIC CONCEPT OF THE pAPAL office is supported by very much more than this one Bible chapter. It is found in the old Testament and in the New through out the Gospels and other books. Plus the Papal office is reinforced and vindicated by post Biblical church History.
The foundation, proof and defense of the Catholic church for its claim is its history, written in pages and the lives of generations of believers. What is your foundation? What credibility do you have? Anybody can claim anything and say it is true. Has it stood the test of time?

Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink
Is it glory to Peter or glory to God. Salvation is only by Jesus. We share in the divine nature with the Holy Ghost.
We are all given the keys to Heaven. We sow we bind as believers. And we reap, reap this eternal life believe in Jesus not Peter or Paul they were just men with all due respect. Amen come Jesus come
My question is, from a Protestant perspective, how does one clearly know what a passage like this means?
I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him and will commit your authority to his hand; and he SHALL be a FATHER to the people of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he SHALL open and none shall shut and he SHALL shut and none shall open.

Romans 14:17 “The key in this kingdom is the Holy Spirit”
Therefore Jesus explained that “flesh and blood could not have given you this answer” (Peter) received it through the Holy Spirit.

God hears your prayers not Peter pray to God

@@MrRock52 im not pointing my finger, im just saying that prayer isnt to make something work out its for you to develop your relationship with God, without that it would have no purpose because God already knows what you need before you ask Him, therefore if you have to pray to someone to pray for you that just means you lack faith and confidence in God
All Peter was doing was going around teaching people the word of God they believed and.
The gateway to heaven is open within them. So the word of God is the key to unlock the door because all Peter's doing is teaching they believe.
The Lord showed me this long ago and some of my friends don’t like it as the view taught in their church is that Peter is the rock.
Jesus literally changed Simon's name to Peter (Petras in Greek, which means Rock)
Peter was the first Pope
In Mathew 18:18 Jesus said to the Apostles Truly I say to you, whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound on heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loose in heaven.v19Again I say to you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask,( I think God's childrens)it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven!
The key is the Ankh that's the only key to life and was before the Roman cross that was given to black people during slavery.
You say that the Catholic Church goes too far, but one could say that it's belief could be true.
Only in Roman Catholic beliefs and doctrines probe that verse.... st.peter is in catholic not in other religious group..
Paul rebuked Peter regards his refusal to eat with the gentiles, then God confirms it by vision, then he is ordered to go to house of Cornelius.
Isaiah 22 would be on a 1st century Jewish mind. He becomes the steward or prime minister of the King. As such a priest, in the line of David.

You have tremendous ignorance on the subject.
Jesus is prophesying and heaven can be seen as the Church.
If so then the office of governor general is to ratify, rule on the mind of the Church.
Jesus is our Lord. God became flesh and made himself of no reputation to God, he humbled himself as a servant. Many will come to sit down in the kingdom of heaven with Abraham Isaac and Jacob. But they shall be cast out. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. God my Savior

The keys mean Peter has become prim minister
It is only one key that can unlock many locks. One key that did even unlock an sertian apple tree and many other stones. Now this far I have not found a key hold that is deeper than a few millimeters. Do know I will find more places it fit. There are sertian images on that when I see it I know the key will unlock it. Even found a Genie in a Bottle with the same markings on and a place to unlock the Genie or lock the Genie. Third Heaven Prophet I am
Good job brother
Peter means rock
Key of heaven id laa ilaa haillallah
But Jesus also spoke aramean which if you translate Peter it means rock
@@xxcrazy-_-moddzzxx_2580 We don't have ANY manuscripts of Jesus speaking Aramaic. The New Testament, including the Gospel of Matthew, was given to us in Greek by the Holy Spirit, so that's all we can use for our examination of what Jesus said.
Why is peter called Satan by Jesus?
Why is peter called a hypocrite by Paul?
Why peter taught wrong Gospel?

My friend you are just trying to disprove the papacy. Read the church fathers.
No papacy taught in the Bible🤷

@@ThetennisDr please explaine, if I read the bible I have to believe in the papacy. Simple
You can always go against what Jesus wanted his Church to be. But thats just your view, not Christs.
@@jamesmeyer4596 You ask man to turn to man rather than turn to God.
The Catholic church places itself between man and God.
The first a is a long a, as in "ate."
3) Whenever God changes someone's name in the bible it is a big deal.
Plus the Papal office is reinforced and vindicated by post Biblical church History.
the catholic church is the one true church. The Bible is a catholic book. Notice how thus pastor consistency says "i think what this means is..."
