I still have in my possession a letter Dr. Mahathir wrote to me in the 1980s, inviting me to join him for tea at his workplace in KL. He was writing in response to a letter I’d written to him after reading his bestseller book “The Malay Dilemma”., which I bought while on holiday in Malaysia with my dear mother in 1979. I read that book from beginning to end and it not only made me cry, but it also made me quite angry. In it, Dr. Mahathir describes how in Malaysia’s past the Malays were treated disrespectfully, and were often belittled or ignored. Sadly, though I visited Malaysia many times until Dec.1986, 😮I never did get around to taking up Dr. Mahathir’s invitation to have tea with him when I’m next in his country. I was living in Germany at the time, which was where I got the letter. I believe Dr. Mahathir was a good man and politician with foresight.
