    Love the 550 combine very nice to operate and great capacity for a small combine and the parts from the 510s all fit so inexpensive to run. I have four of them. I have one of the last ones made with 360 hours on it in the shed looks like it just came from the factory. Great video thanks

      I don't know for sure when MF quit building the 550 but I'd guess at least 30 years ago. You have a very low hour machine there.

      1986 was the last year for Massey Ferguson combines in 1987 the combine division was put in a separate company called Massey Combine corporation and they made some 850s and 860s with Massey on the sides. Not sure if they made any 550s that year I’ve never seen one. The company went bankrupt in 87 and that was the end. One interesting thing about the 550 that I have is that the engine lid on the front is painted red and all the others are black I’m thinking it’s a 1986 would have to run the serial number to know for sure

    I don't think I've ever seen the Cockshutt combine before, I've seen a few Oliver's though. I enjoyed it, thanks for sharing!

      Cockshutt sold a lot of those here. Painted green they were an Oliver but I never saw any of them. Not many Oliver dealers around.

    That is one trusty Loadstar! I would have been 8 in 1993. I want to say that was the year that we had snow up here in early September but it could have been 1992. Everything other than the canola was still standing. That was the year dad decided to put those “fancy crop lifter things” on the pull type swather. The funny thing was, I remember most of it melted within a couple days and it ended up being in the 70 Fahrenheit range well into October. Just one of those weird events the NW Saskatchewan grain belt likes to get once in a while. Not much of an idea on yields as I was only 8 but I never remember dad complaining much for yields in most of the 90s. Prices were the biggest complaints in those days.
    I love these “old” videos. We ran pull types (still do) but it reminds me of some of my neighbours equipment in those days. Grandpa had a Massey 410 back in I’m guessing the mid 1960s. Not sure when it left the farm but it was well before my time. As far as I know, it was the only Massey thing we ever owned and so I know practically nothing about Massey. Always heard good things about the Perkins diesel though, and there’s still a couple guys running 700 and 800 series Massey around here. One here even runs an 851 PT still. From what I gather though, it seems like Massey guys preferred the 700s over the 800s. Not sure if it’s a simplicity thing or a durability thing. As for 500 series I don’t really ever recall seeing any, at least not for the late 80s onward.

      @roosty6  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems to me we could usually identify the bigger Masseys at a distance by the cloud of black smoke from the Perkins diesels. Not my 550 as I don't ever recall seeing any smoke from it. Non turbo engine of course.

      Any kind of a cab was better than nothing on some of those cold fall harvest days. I might have a bit more worth posting in more videos to come.

      The White combine was retired about 20 years ago. The 550 Massey went to a new owner in 98. But that old IH Loadstar is still on the job here.

      Thanks Sam. Back in 93 it was rare to see a tandem and I don't know if anybody had a semi other than custom truckers. Most trucked their own grain to the elevator in their own single axle 3 ton truck.

    I know a fella that grew nipiwan wheat until just a couple years ago. Well I'm sure it wasn't truly nipiwan anymore and it was down to 20bpa and less even with groceries thrown at it. He's since got a new variety of wheat.

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neepawa was a good variety but I think it dates back to the early 1970s. I've moved through several varieties since then. Been growing Brandon for a few years and still like it.

      @@roosty6 I've heard good things about Brandon but no one close to us grows it that I've found. I grew some stuff called teal, then I switch to harvest. They deregulated that so I tried red water. It did amazing the first year as certified seed. The following 2 years was a disgrace. Then last year I got some abound. It did pretty well for the drought we had.

      @roosty6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremycherny2041 Teal goes back quite a ways too and I remember growing it. I think before Brandon I was growing Lillian wheat. It was supposed to be sawfly resistant which was the reason everybody wanted it. Never hear about sawflies anymore.

    Why does the Cockshutt have two different model numbers on it? Is 545 the model of chopper on it? It looks like it was lacking a little in capacity, ha ha! I bet in it's prime it was probably just about top of the line

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was waiting for somebody to ask about the numbers. Who knows what a previous owner might have installed? Maybe they had to replace the rear sheet metal and took whatever the wrecker had that fit. There is quite a difference in capacity between the 550 and a 5542.

  • @tyerock7851
    @tyerock7851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Odd how they only have one rear tail light as if the extra assembly and wiring cost so much lol. Is the chain baler your only round you ever had and small squares previous ?

    • @roosty6
      @roosty6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, 847 was my first and only round baler. Started out with a 270 NH square baler and then a Massey 120. I still use the Massey some.
