MYTH: Legend of the Origin of the Name Tegal | Ki Gede Sebayu | Queen Kalinyamat
Version 1: Ki Gede Sebayu
The city of Tegal originated from the village of "Te-Tegal". In 1530, this village was already advanced and was part of Pemalang Regency which recognized the Pajang kingdom. Ki Gede Sebayu, son of Ki Ageng Wunut and grandson of Batara Katong, Regent of Ponorogo, headed west and arrived at the banks of the Gung River. Seeing the fertility of the land, he and the residents expanded agricultural land and made canals. For his success, he was appointed as a leader and role model for the community.
Ki Gede Sebayu was then appointed as an elder with the rank of Juru Demung or Demang by the Regent of Pemalang at the rice harvest celebration on 15 Sapar in 1580. During his leadership, agricultural land expanded and the results were traded to other areas, forming markets and cities. The port at the mouth of the Gung River in the west was called "Muara Tua", then moved to the east, namely the Tegal port "Kalibacin".
In trade, many ethnic groups settled in Tegal, developing religious and cultural teachings, especially Islam. After his death, Ki Gede Sebayu was buried in Danawarih Village, and his business was continued by his son, Ki Gede Honggowono.
Version 2: Queen Kalinyamat
Queen Kalinyamat, whose real name is Retna Kencana, is the daughter of Sultan Trenggana of the Demak Sultanate. Married to Sunan Hadiri from Jepara, she experienced a tragedy when her husband was killed by Arya Penangsang. Retna Kencana returned to Jepara, took over the government, and was known as Queen Kalinyamat.
Queen Kalinyamat is known as a strong and wise leader, developing maritime and regional defense. Jepara became a center of trade and a dominant maritime power under her leadership. She strengthened the navy and promoted trade with foreign nations. One of her achievements was resistance to the Portuguese in Malacca.
Queen Kalinyamat often visited the northern coastal areas of Java, including Tegal, to ensure that the area supported the kingdom with sufficient food supplies. Tegal, which was fertile, became the main rice granary for her territory.
Legend has it that Queen Kalinyamat blessed the land of Tegal, making it very fertile. She is also depicted as the protector of farmers in Tegal. The community believes that this blessing continues to this day, making Tegal a productive agricultural area.
The story of Queen Kalinyamat is often told in cultural events, keeping the historical heritage alive. In traditional ceremonies, Queen Kalinyamat is honored as an important figure. In several places in Tegal, there are historical relics associated with Queen Kalinyamat.
The origin of the name Tegal, which is associated with the legend of Queen Kalinyamat, shows the connection between history, culture, and local society. Queen Kalinyamat's legacy lives on in the hearts of the Tegal community, making "Tegal" a symbol of prosperity and blessings.
