at 6:08 to 6:10 theres a really big nohu or scorpion fish hiding in the bottom right of the screen, those are some of the best eating fish out here, they're super buttery and oily and the head is super good for soup. They can be kinda hard to find but if you ever find um they're definitely worth shooting.
Epic video! It was great running into you and Sam that day. It's hard to see but you can get a feeling of how agitated the water was when you are on the surface at that spot. Certainly not for beginner (or even intermediate) divers. You guys are absolute legends for being out there. Next time we wind up at the same spot feel free to shoot one of those monsters and put it on our hook. It will be our little secret! Stay safe, thanks for the shout out and keep producing your awesome videos!
Would love to show you guys around been watching your stuff for awhile. My plan was an Australia TH-cam dive tour after the world starts again but maybe you come here first.
Try filleting the fish, and scraping the skin with a spoon, I have never boiled fish skins (maybe It makes them better?, build a dry box like the ones they use for pipikaula. Put your fish skins in that and let the wind do your drying so you don't have to scrape pans. Then go straight to the fryer. It worked great for me for years on Hawaii reef fish, and now its works great in Alaska on salmon skins.
Ohhh I like that way better. Definitely gotta figure out how to streamline this because I’ll be doing it a lot I’m sure. So scale them first though right?
Awesome video! Uku is one of my top 3 fishes that I want to try and land from the shore, that skin looks killa too! I (Brian) started off spearfishing as a kid, watching your videos has lit a spark in hopes of one day getting back in there. Thanks for the killer content, looking forward to your next adventure, Big Mahalos!
We almost did an uku fishing shore day the other day I think I can make it happen by swimming out sorta. Been seeing them all over lately! Gotta get back out there man it’s the best! Such a great thing to do when the bite is slow too. Hope to get out there and make a vid with you one of these days!
Love the videos, it's great to see you try new things and film it for us. My Japanese friend deep frys fish scales which could be worth a try. I would put some baking paper down to stop the skin sticking to the oven tray. Cheers John
I have been making allot of beef jerky lately (just did 24 gallon bags worth in 2 weeks) and agree a dehydrator will probably be the way to go. I use the Redhead 10 tray Stanless steel dehydrator however they have a 6 tray plastic one that would probably be perfect for what you two are wanting. Great video, makes me want to try that with some rockfish or flounder skin.
That was actually pretty fun watching the lottery live. It got me hoping, haha. Also, if you preheat the pan/oil before dropping on the boiled skin I don't think they'll stick near as much - like a BBQ grill etc.
Hey Ryan! Do you think you could do a spearfishing 101 video for beginners or for people with little to no experience in the water with a gun or 3 prong?
For the taco, down here in Australia when the guys get them (they’re too soft to bite them) so they use their thumbs and flip the head inside out, kills them straight away. Sick vid as always bro
Ryan Myers I’m young , And the only person who can take me is my dad, and he’s getting old, but he told me you can’t get better in a day so I go as often as I can
My son is watching your vids now and finds them the best to learn spearfishing tactics and skills. Now he wants some gear. Just a pity it’s so cold here. Air fryers work well for that kind of thing, no oil and nice & crispy.
Try filleted skin right into the hot oil. Make sure you pat dry the skin to remove as much liquid. Season then straight into the oil. Dry on paper towel to remove the oil. Awesome with salmon skin too. Aloha.
Hey Ryan, wondering if you'll see this. I recently picked up a 110 RA GT Roller. I'm finding that my shooting line is getting stuck in the ball bearings and crippling my range. Is it because I'm using mono on my shooting line instead of dyneema? Should I switch back? Thanks for your time.
Never seen anyone use mono on that gun that could be your problem. Every 100 shots it will get tangled anyways. It gets tangled sometimes too but only when it stops early and hits a fish or rock. Pulls right out though so no worries if you shoot something big close up.
What editing software do you use? Basically you just need to do a little easy color correction. Up the saturation a bit and maybe brightness, depending on the lighting that day.
Looking to get into spear fishing / free diving myself. Do you have any suggestions on which free diving courses that are reliable on Oahu that would help me learn the fundamentals?
Ya it is they gave me a code too use RYAN10 for a discount. This is the 15 L. Depending on how big your local fish are and how far you typically hike I might go with the 30 L. I fit 20 lbs of small fish and a few pounds of ice.
How do you equalize cause I don’t wanna blow and hurt my ear drums cause when I try blow out of water and I can’t feel how hard I’m blowing so do you know any tips how to equalize without hands?
Kinda just luck on equalizing hands free. Best advice is to perfect the frenzel first. Look it up and practice all you can. Lots of good info out there.
are you ever worried about shallow water blackout or is Sam your partner incase something goes wrong? Whenever i dive alone i tend to cut my bottom time in half, cuz sometimes the fish aint worth it. but sick video man.
Octopus is such an easy to get fish, especially in the med, but you have to be careful as making little mistakes can cost you your life. My dad had seen an octopus just chilling on a rock and it started to move so my dad took his polespear, hit it dead center, and went to grab it, only the octopus was still latched onto the rock, and as my dad went to grab it, it grabbed onto his hand and now my dad was basically suck down there, he tried prying his out hand, everything. So what he ended up doing was flipping over the little flap that contains the brains of the octopus, cause doing that literally maybe them go brain dead after a minute. He also took his knife, slashed the eyes of the octopus (which also is a method for killing them quickly) and he cut off some tentacles that were stuck to the rock. After that as he was ascending, he decided to string it to his belt, and as he was stringing it, an eel that was like a myth in the area, decided it would like to have some octopus for dinner. The eel was massive. Estimated to be 330 years old at the time, it was collosal. The eel barely missed my dad's... parts... And yeah thats why its kinda dangerous to go for octopus (i dont know about the pacific but in the med you gotta be careful), and like the greek saying goes, for every 2 octopus, there is 1 eel.

Great hunting mate! Would love to get over there for a dive with ya when restrictions ease.
Would love to show you guys around been watching your stuff for awhile. My plan was an Australia TH-cam dive tour after the world starts again but maybe you come here first.
Omg ....I’m so hungry now after watching the fish skin hit the oil curl up ....🥰🥰mmmmm... mahalo guys

Awesome dive, I love the catch and cook videos. So cool
Thanks Ryan stoked you like them!!!

Awesome video. The chicharrones looked delicious..👍😁
They were amazing for sure.
Very good.
Thanks!!!
Greatest yt channel!
Yo Ryan Meyer guess what, I’m doing this uku chicharons recipe right now and can’t wait to try it it ‼️😀👍🤙🏾🤙🏾
Yewww lots of work but worth it!!!! Enjoy!
maybe a get a silicone cooking sheet we use them for baking .. it may help with teh drying of the fish without the sticking
Ya bet that would work. Thanks!!!
Oh yah garanz work better
Love the videos, it's great to see you try new things and film it for us. My Japanese friend deep frys fish scales which could be worth a try. I would put some baking paper down to stop the skin sticking to the oven tray.

Thanks John! Ya I hear you can do the scales someone mentioned big uhu scales. Maybe another video.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions awesome, I love your videos, both Sam and yourself are great

Love ur videos bruh, two videos a week ?
Lucky you guys! Hoping to get 2-3 every week. Soon!
That was actually pretty fun watching the lottery live. It got me hoping, haha. Also, if you preheat the pan/oil before dropping on the boiled skin I don't think they'll stick near as much - like a BBQ grill etc.
Good tip man thanks! Next time I think I’m skipping oven though and going straight in the oil.
Bro you should do a aholehole diving video! It’s more shallow but they are good fun and in my opinion just as good as kole
I’ve seen em but haven’t shot any yet! I always see em in big schools but then they take off. I hear they are great eating though.
Super cool video. You should try and use a sheet pan with parchment paper so it won’t stick. Do it all the time with salmon skin
Great video again...thanks!
No worries James thanks for the support!!!
The rainbow thought
Love the rainbows here!
Hey Ryan! Do you think you could do a spearfishing 101 video for beginners or for people with little to no experience in the water with a gun or 3 prong?
Ya might be a good idea just basic first timer info. Thanks for the suggestion.
For the taco, down here in Australia when the guys get them (they’re too soft to bite them) so they use their thumbs and flip the head inside out, kills them straight away. Sick vid as always bro
Thanks man ya that’s how I usually do it because I’m too much of a wimp to bite em!
Also try using your bbq on a low smoke to dehydrate the skins, the smoke will take away some of the fish smell Sam was talking about.
Ohh I like the bbq idea!
Ryan! Awesome vid.. any details on that float? I have never seen one with a hatch and always thought that would be sick!
Do u have any tips on how to train your lungs, because I only started diving like 2 months ago
Bro as Ryan always says just dive more ..it comes with experience
Take a Fii Freediver 1 course. You will learn a bunch!
Practice is key. Just got to go as often as you can with the best people you can find and you will get better.
Ryan Myers I’m young , And the only person who can take me is my dad, and he’s getting old, but he told me you can’t get better in a day so I go as often as I can
Adam Freediver has lots of tips on techniques
My son is watching your vids now and finds them the best to learn spearfishing tactics and skills. Now he wants some gear. Just a pity it’s so cold here. Air fryers work well for that kind of thing, no oil and nice & crispy.
Stoked for you son get him some gear and take him somewhere warm!!!
Ryan this video looks so clean and crisp I’m really impressed. What settings do you put on you’re GoPro for the underwater clips??
Thanks man I think the key is the water clarity. Go pro 7 black 2.7 60 FPS wide. Nothing fancy but it’s been working great.
Ryan Myers thanks bro! I just bought a Hero 8 black so I’m excited to use it
yo Ryan try using a baking mat that way you can bend the mat and hopefully all the skins can fall off
Great idea! Thanks Justin!
Best dive vid bro🤙🏽
Thanks guys!!!!
Chee! Cherreh dive bro, awesome giveaway, congrats to the winner! So much action out there! Master Chef Sam👩🍳 you sure got some patience!
🤙Aloha
I gotta try that fish skin chicharron recipe with aholehole or some goat skins!

Awesome skin chips, bro i'm going to do them thanks to you excellent🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
No worries man let us know how they come out!!!
That looks good!
Thanks Garrett it really was!
Make fish nachos with the skin and the fish 🐟🐟
Love that idea!
Thanks man this is happening!
Yoo Ryan nice video
Thanks Kaden!!!
instead of the oven can you use a food dehydrator?
Totally!
LOL Ryan - kill fish. Sam - Cook fish.
She kills fish too gotta post more of her hunting.
Agreed
Ryan Myers kinda what I was hinting at....lets see some bow hunting goats, sheep, pig. Oahu too populated.
Try filleted skin right into the hot oil. Make sure you pat dry the skin to remove as much liquid. Season then straight into the oil. Dry on paper towel to remove the oil. Awesome with salmon skin too. Aloha.
Definitely going to try that method next time. This was delicious but way too much work,
I guess I wont be wasting fish skin after all 🤣
I’ll feel like a lazy bastard every time I toss one out now.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions just looking at you eat it, I'm like I should try that 🤣

Awesome video, I am located on the Hilo side an watch your videos all the time! What GoPro are you using? How do you bring the color out so good?
What editing software do you use? Basically you just need to do a little easy color correction. Up the saturation a bit and maybe brightness, depending on the lighting that day.
Thanks Kekoa! Go pro 7 2.7 60 FPS. We don’t do any color editing or correcting at all. Clear water helps a lot.
American girl cooking is priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fish skin never looked so good! And I actually really like fish skin!
It was pretty epic but not sure I’ll go through all that again. Next time right into the oil no boil and scrape.
Mahalo for the video!
No worries at all glad you liked it!!!
You are the best you removed my fer of water tyvm love from Bahrain
Sweet happy to help!!!
i do it with Salmon skins, on the grill, works fantastic.
I would love to fry up some salmon skins
Love fried salmon skin now I just need a salmon!!!
Looking to get into spear fishing / free diving myself. Do you have any suggestions on which free diving courses that are reliable on Oahu that would help me learn the fundamentals?
I’m a big fan of Kurts method but can’t go wrong with Dan either. Lots of good options over there.
Hey mate just wondering if that’s a creek kooler you have? And if so what size
Ya it is they gave me a code too use RYAN10 for a discount. This is the 15 L. Depending on how big your local fish are and how far you typically hike I might go with the 30 L. I fit 20 lbs of small fish and a few pounds of ice.

Tank update in tomorrow’s video!!!
Hey Ryan your vids are sick. What type of camera do you use to film underwater
Go pro 7
Would be cool if you showed the gear and guns you use in one of your future videos
Gear review coming super soon I promise!
Aloha !!!!🤙🏼😎 stay salty !!
Thanks Jorge but I hate being salty I always keep fresh water nearby!
Sam needs her own cooking channel
She’s working on it. Soon hopefully!
Hi i love the vids
Thanks guys lots more coming!!!
Ryan, great video! Here's a tip: Don't remove the "rest" of flesh that is stuck on the skin, fry it all 👊
Just tried that! Honestly did not come out as well. Stayed a bit chewy but it was on a massive uku. Video out in a few hours!
Great video!
Thanks guys!!!
NOTHING is worse than dropping your taco. 🌮 😞
The worst

good videoooooooo
Thanks!!!
Bro, try it with a dip. Vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, chili. 🤙🏽
Hmmm I like it! Tried it last night again but without boiling or scrapping or drying. Definitely was way easier but not nearly as good.,
From philppines
can you do more of the clips of the huge fish you shoot
Got some huge fish video dropping tomorrow!
sooo many uku I wish my knee wasn’t acting funny this day.

Gotta dive with a buddy and ya me and Sam buddy up and she knows what to do if anything happened to me.
How long did you all have them in the oven for?
Like an hour or so too get full dried!
Looks good to try but i feel fish with scales will do this better...hmmm i feel a good hogfish and grouper will do this so perfecto.
Ya I’ve seen it done with grouper skin scales on. It’s gotta come out different on all types of fish. Stoked to experiment a bit.
This fish did have scales lol just so you know
I watched it 3:12 congratulations
Thanks man!!!
are there size limits on the kohles
No
POV Surfer yes it’s five inches
Not that I know of on big island.
#in Oahu
And the guacamole and pico de gallo ?!!
We weren’t sure how this would work out but it was great so next time we’ll add guacamole and pico de Gallo!
I do it with nearly all my fish I recon you could do it on uku as well
That’s awesome man think I’m going to be doing this with most of my fish from now on too.
