Gear I DON’T RECOMMEND for filmmaking (while travelling)

  • Travel filmmaking is as much about the art of storytelling as it is about packing strategically. In this mini guide, I get into the treasures and pitfalls of camera gear selection for on-the-move shooting and the worst gear for travel creators in 2023/2024. It's a fine balance of space optimization with weight and ensuring you're equipped to capture those cinema-quality moments. Learn about the must-have accessories and those that might be more hype than helpful. Whether journeying around the world or documenting a short local trip, I think you can leave these things behind.
I've been travelling the world for the last 4 years, and this is my experience and advice for you :)

Glad to see you agree with the no gimbal look, it's so cumbersome to bring along and something I always avoid bringing

Ya for sure! It has its benefits but ultimately it’ll probably slow you down quite a bit. You’ve just got to master the non shaky camera walk instead

I traveled Asia for 8 months with my Canon r6 Peter McKinnon nomatic bag, 15-35, 28-70, and 70-200, dji mini 3, 2 action cams and a laptop. 8:16 Everything in total weighed 32lbs 🥹 and it was a nightmare to carry around for that long.
My advice for travel photographers everywhere is look into apsc systems like Fuji film or Sony. The image quality and video quality you can get from these tiny cameras is so impressive and the size and weight factor for travel is absolutely game changing.
I went from a 32lb kit with my canon gear to a 12lb kit with my Fuji film. Lens makers like sigma are making insanely optically sharp lenses like the 18-50 2.8 that weigh less then 300 grams compared to my canon lens that weighed 1200+ grams a piece. With apsc there is a 1.5x crop factor on your field of view making zooming in much easier. Allowing you to travel with a lens like a 50-150 (70-200 full frame equivalent) with ease.
    Great video and good recommendations!

Ugh I’m the same and carrying that bag is no fun. It takes time to disconnect from the idea that the more gear the better but it’s really the way to go :) thanks David! Glad you found this helpful!

One bit I would add is travel with APSC cameras instead of full-frame. The camera bodies and lenses are much lighter and smaller. My 50-210 lens is stupidly small.
I like taking candid photos too so it way easier for the to blend in with a smaller system rather than have people going hey look at that guy with that big photo canon lol. Plus you have the benefit for that 1.5x added reach.

You speak the truth here! great tips. Good shot making and subjects will make your minimal gear set up shine.
Plus the controlled handheld look is very much in fashion right now - those ultra smooth gimbals are great for real estate presentation or concept video - but not so much for travel.

For just stills (e.g. landscapes), the RF 100-400 is incredible for travel. It's even lighter than any 70-200 F4 and is pretty good optically as well. However, the slow aperature might be a problem for video or for fast moving subjects.

That’s true! But the newer 70-200, f2.8 is super light and compact! It’s a beast. But I do love the 400 zoom - it definitely has its place

A note about SSDs. My cat pushed mine off my desk and it stopped working. I brought it in for repair and was promptly told, "those don't get repaired". As in, they can't be fixed!

Omg no way. Well that’s good to know 🥲 can’t wait until a safe and secure solution is made. Like an indestructible tini 100tb ssd

I would leave the 24-70 as well. They can be bulky. I go with 35mm prime and 70-200. Mini 3 pro for drone and osmo action for walking taking heads. If I want go even smaller, I ditch my camera for my Fuji x100F

Ou that’s a good suggestion. The 35 is such a good one. It’s so versatile. This is some good advice

      @one901 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yup. You can do a lot with a 35. I’ve found when I bring my 24-70, I’m less likely to carry it because it’s a bit cumbersome on excursions.
I usually take an action cam because it is basically indestructible.
