丹後半島の北東部、日本海に面する伊根町は、海面すれすれに舟屋が立ち並ぶ独特の町並みで知られています。
Ine Town, facing the Sea of Japan in the northeastern part of the Tango Peninsula, is known for its unique townscape with rows of boathouses just above the surface of the sea.
江戸時代からあったといわれる舟屋は、もともと舟を海から引き上げ、雨風から守るための小屋でした。現在は、１階が舟を収納する船揚場、物置、作業場になっており、２階は客室や民宿、生活の場として活用されています。
The boathouses, which are said to have existed since the Edo period, were originally huts used to pull boats out of the sea and protect them from the wind and rain. Today, the first floor is used as a landing place for boats, storage, and workshops, while the second floor is used as guest rooms, a guest house, and a place to live.
伊根湾は海岸線が複雑で、町のほとんどが切り立った崖と山から構成されるため、人が居住できる面積が限られていました。この土地を最大限活かすための知恵と工夫が、舟屋だったのではないかと考えられています。
Ine Bay has a complex coastline and most of the town consists of sheer cliffs and mountains, which limited the area available for human habitation. It is thought that boathouses were a wise and ingenious way to make the most of this land.
どこか懐かしさを感じるのは、海に寄り添い、海とともに生きる素朴な暮らしが、自然と共生してきた日本人の心に通じるからかもしれません。
Perhaps it is because the simple lifestyle of living close to the sea and living together with the sea is nostalgic, and it is in keeping with the spirit of the Japanese people, who have lived in harmony with nature.
周囲５Kmの湾に沿って230軒もの舟屋が並ぶ世界でも珍しい港町は、2005年、国の「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」に選定されました。
This is one of the few port towns in the world where 230 boathouses are lined up along a bay with a circumference of 5 km.
In 2005, this port town was selected as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings” by the Japanese government.
