    My grandmother and mother dusted the tomatoes and cabbage with flour and put corn meal around the plants. I am 67 and still do this. The worms can't digest it and die.

    Hi Mrs.H, I have been planting marigolds alongside of my tomato plants for a few years now. I heard that they deter pest due to their strong smell. I haven’t had anything bothering mine and I used to get hornworms and other bugs before I started doing that. Maybe next season you can try planting the marigolds in between them. I think it might help. Your tomatoes are beautiful and I have never seen a tomato so big. Your planting hands are truly blessed. ❤🙏🏽

    Mr and Mrs Heart, I'm going to tell you what my father and my grandfather told me. No matter what you plant, you have to plant enough for the animals and the insects, because they are going to get their share. So I deal with a little loss for them and what they mess up goes to the chickens. They also feed us.

  • @NannyTam
    @NannyTam ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My granny (born in 1901) would say “go get the soap bucket” it was soap and water. All us grandkids would walk through and pick off the worms and drop them in the buckets. No spraying or treatments of any kind. Just lots of hard work. The green hornworms were the worst! You couldn’t see them. Only way we knew they were there is because all the leaves were stripped off the vines so the hunt was on! So sorry about your pests. I have the same problem, but mine are on my potato plants. Horn worms stripping the vines. They aren’t ready for harvest, but potatoes won’t grow without foliage so just praying for something down there . Beautiful tomatoes you grew this year!! Well done!!! 🥰🥰🥰

    Back then they used to soak cured tobacco in a barrel and then spray that on the crops. They used flour on squash and cabbage for wirms
    The soil was different, the pests are more resistant. They did more picking off the worns as well.

    Hey good evening Mr. & Mrs. Heart ❤️. I just packaged up my very first Kentucky pole beans seeds 🫘 . Watching your videos inspired me to keep trying. I’m a city girl with a garden growing in 1-5 gallon pots and bags and a new stacked tower. My green beans were in pots hanging from my chain link fence. I got about a pint jar worth of them and cooked them up with some black eyed peas and smoked sausage. Yummy! A few escaped my eyes and dried out on the vine. It really felt really good to bag them up and label the tiny little zipper bag . Thank you for encouraging me/ us all to keep on! I’ve got some baby zucchini starts to plant. And plenty of seeds to try. The chicken keeps getting my tomato plants.😮Those white cabbage moths keep getting onto my collard greens 7dust isn’t working same for my okra, but my bush beans are flowering. The leaves are yellowing and I have given fish emulsion. What do I do? I got 2 potato plants from the 8 I planted. I think it’s the blue ones. My peppers seem to be on hold at about 10” tall not getting any bigger but I see a few flowers. I’m getting baby cucumbers now so I will be looking at your pickling videos again and again!❤ I have peas 🫛 growing in my stacked planter on the bottom and some herbs in the middle. I think I might try the white beets seeds and the Parisian carrots at the top . 😊 Anyway thanks again for the encouragement ❤

    I too don’t want to use chemicals in my garden but the dang worms and squash beetles were trying my nerves. So I mixed dawn and water and sprayed all my plants down. Everything was gone to their reward the next morning. So far only a few new worms have tried my patience and they have joined their friends. No plant damage from the soap. Worth a try. Beautiful garden. Blessings to the home.

    This shows how the 'Farmers, Homesteaders & Victory-type Gardeners' eventually came to the conclusion where they realized not doing something MORE POWERFUL to kill off Garden Pests was actually taking 'food out of their families' mouths!' This is how we got to the use of COMMERICAL products. I would personally recommend that these Successful Homesteaders start interplanting crops with other plants and flowers to throw some of these pests off. Garlic & Onions in the right places might help. Trap plants... and not planting the same crops in the same spot year over year. So many things to try and stop the invasions!
    The 'Rusted Gardener' is correct when he teaches EVERYTHING IS A CHEMICAL! If it's not NATURALLY GROWING that's exactly what it is but you must decide whether your going to buy Organic products and give that a chance or SYNTHETIC products that are PROVEN to work. It is YOUR garden and how far you go down the *rabbit hole* is YOUR choice! I say this to the Viewers NOT the Video Makers as I am sure that I am 'preaching to the choir' as far as they are concerned... see that Sister is getting TIRED of the Pests & has come to the realization that she has to SPRAY SOMETHING!

    I wanna say on the years that my gram was struggling with the worms, she brought in her tomatoes just as they started to blush and she would set them on racks on top of the deep freeze to ripen in the house. And like you said, any of those that could be saved, despite damage, she would cut out the bad and keep the rest. She did so much canning for her five kids, their spouses, and then us 10 grands. Sunday dinners were always amazing all winter long. You are getting some really good looking tomatoes :) Good for you!!

They did use mineral oil on the silks of the corn cobs though. Only thing different these days is all the new pests from imports. Our grandparents didn’t have to deal with as many insects as we do. Was just thinking about you guys today. I wonder if Mrs H has started to can those eggplant yet. I felt the same way you did with that critter damaged tomato. My first eggplant. It was beautiful. I kept looking at it every day , it’s was finally ready to harvest . I was so happy until I felt a big gouge in the back of the eggplant I didn’t see. Was it a raccoon or possum. Oh we have all those animals in the city of Long Beach, California.
