I think the moral in the grim version was to avoid arrogance. The father's bragging almost doomed his daughter and rumple's gloating in the forest allowed the messenger to learn his name.
I agree with both of you, example stories do a better job of guiding folks than telling them don't/do something... I sorta feel bad for Rumplemintz ;) since he did all the work and was not rewarded (I am NOT in support of human trafficking!) though considering when the original story was written, a servant/apprentice could likely have been brought in for quite a bit less then spools and rooms of gold. I love delving into tales like this
That's what I was thinking. The bragging of the father got the daughter in trouble and the bragging of Rump ended up in his actual death. That at least is what I got from Grimm version. Also be cautious of who you do deals with. There is danger when it comes time to collect. You may or may not be able to pay in the future. She just lucked out because of Rumps arrogance.
Once Upon a Time is an amazing TV series, and Rumplestiltskin is the best actor and character in the whole series. The way he say "Because we all know, every magic comes at a price!" has been imprinted forever in my mind. Absolutely stunning performance
"Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß, dass Ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!" I never realised that the song only works in german (edit: works in dutch and other northern european languages too!) and people who read the translated version missed out on an iconic rhyme.
Nah, the greek translators wrote a poem that rhymed. I don't remember what it was because I was 8 or 9 when I read it, but I do remember pissing my γιαγιά (grandma) off cause I kept singing it to her.
@@stephjovi Even if it there is a english version that rhymes, and I do have seen/read some, I personally find myself a little more fascinated by the german version. I don't even know why.
@@trainwhackk5321 :) well I`m Austrian so I grew up with the german versions of all the fairytales. I would guess you prefer it because it is because the original.
I think the tales moral is, that words have power. to know the name of something that scares you, to call it out, that gives you power over it and reduces it's impact on you, for what we really fear most is the unknown.
In the past, when someone would find out the name of a demon, then the person would have power over the demon. They could exorcise or invoke them. I am guessing this fairy tale has it's roots in something like that type of story.
Fear is the unknown, meaning to say that what we call fear is just the brains way of processing unknown variables, with a rational end. Rational being self preservation leading to the flight or fight reaction being activated. The most common fear is nyctophobia, the fear of the dark. We don't know what's in there so our brain says " yeah no I'm cool let's stay over here"
shawn goff Oh god I hate the dark. It's never just the dark, it's what COULD be in the dark. Even if we can see a scary thing, sure it's still scary, but we can take the needed action to escape it while aware of where it is. As for the dark.. it surrounds you, and so could the things in it. I think I just peed myself..
German here. In German it kinda rhymes. Also I’ve grown up with the “creepy origins” . So in the version I grew up with the father was drunk and kinda flexing on the people in this tavern . So this rumor gets to the king who in this type of time is really in need of money. They also say they cut the fathers head of for lying or his daughter or both . He keeps lying cause at this point he knows he’ll die . He rather sacrifices his daughter. Then as you told I just know the detail that all the artefacts she gave Rumpelstilzchen We’re from her mother that died. also in the german Version i know the father after is really bitter cause he and his relatives are really poor and his daughter now married the kings son. Also pretty creepy: in German the rhyme includes Rumpelstilzchen actually singing that he is planning to eat this child . Good research I just guess in Germany they added more details or maybe some got lost in translation.
Ah thank you, I've been trying to find origin stories of why he wanted the baby at all. and this is one of the first times I've heard any reason given.
@Vicodyn yeah most of our stories are pretty gruesome in their origins. The 'funny' thing is most of these we get told as cautionary tales. And you're right there are actually a lot of tales that involve childrens hands getting cut off...
As a Child i was a little bit Confused because of the Sentence "Heute koch ich, Morgen brau ich, übermorgen stehle ich der Königin ihr Kind". And didn't thought that he would eat it
@@ericgeddes3353 Yeah that's what I'd expect also right before this Rumple- *snaps the gauntlet to him* Now let's make a deal And then Belle dumps him again after he uses the gauntlet
Agreed, the Gauntlet may be powerful...but I've seen Rumple steal something right out of someone's hands with just a snap of the fingers. If he wanted, Rumple could steal it from Thanos and send the Avengers back in the past with the Time Stone
"I'd rather just steer clear of the topic than spread potentially false information" OMFG thank you for actually being a decent person!! 🤣 I really wish more TH-camrs would hold themselves to that standard.
@@derpderpson8803 You may actually be right. In magical lore names (True names) have power. It's how you invoke or banish supernatural creatures. But I think modern depictions fixate on the "Don't brag" version of the moral.
In German he sings: "Heute back ich morgen brau ich Übermorgen hol ich mir der Königin ihr Kind. Ach wie gut das niemand weiß, das ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß." The last part is rhyming in german. Also the germans see the moral of Rumpelstiltsken, that you shouldn't make deals with the devil! It doesn't pay out well, because the queen can't find the solution on her own. ^^
+Jonny Q That would be so much better, but I remember it as "Übermorgen hol ich mir der Königin ihr Kind" too because I remember thinking that this sounded strange
I sometimes find it difficult to see Rumplestiltskin as the _bad_ guy in all this. I feel like the king and the miller are the ones that screwed the poor girl over! Anywho, my favorite adaptation of the tale is the Britannica one.
Definitely the greedy king is the main villain. The Miller next just for lying. The girl was put in a bad situation, and should have stated to Rumplestiltskin to take the life of the king. She should have never agreed to having the child being a bargain piece, and Rumplestiltskin makes no sense to sing out loud his name.
I see Rumplestiltskin as the victim in this story. Not only did he help someone who was not even thankful enough to ask him his name but he was swindled out of his payment for his hard work. Since he is obviously quite ugly hes not going to be having children of his own so I can see why he would want one.
In a creative writing class many years ago, we were asked to reimagine a well known story from a different point of view. I chose this one, and in mine, Rumplestiltskin was a sympathetic character who wanted the child to raise as his own and teach his craft to. ( I don't think I've read a version that says why he wants the child). I made the princess as a greedy and spoiled child who was prone to manipulation. It was fun to look at it from a different perspective.
Yeah I really never thought about that. chances are the young child may grow up to be as greedy as his father and become a bad ruler or Rumpelstiltskin was an alchemist and may have wanted to raise the boy as his apprentice.
I also know the version where he wants to eat the child. The chanting around the fire seems like he‘s preparing a feast. „today i‘m brewing, tomorrow i‘m baking...“
I grew up with two different versions, this version is one of them. In the other version, she was told the king's proposition when he arrived home, plus the deal was for her to marry the king's son instead and, when Rumplestiltskin gave her the three days to learn his name, she went straight to her husband (he was the baby's father after all) fearing to be put to death but, the prince loved her very much and he was the one who sent out the man to learn the name, which upon learning, he told his wife. What I don't understand is, upon hearing the miller's lie, why didn't the king suspect anything amiss? .... I mean really, a miller has a daughter that can spin straw into gold yet the miller remains poor and doesn't have her spin any gold for neither themselves nor any of their neighbors or friends, yet he'll lie to the king.....Just sounds odd to me. It's always been one of my favorite fairy tales though. Nice video.
"The Rumpelstiltskin Problem" by Vivian Vande Velde is perhaps the most entertaining collection of retellings (from the hilarious to the heartbreaking) of this fairytale. She does well to point out, "Why the heck would a guy who can spin a whole room full of straw into gold do it in exchange for a tiny ring?" The short "Straw into Gold" was worth the whole book itself.
Breeze Devlin the show once apon a time am watching it now btw ITS RLLY good it’s about fairytails if u watched it u would under Peter Pan not a good a person
There’s this version I read in Arabic when I was younger that was kind of similar to this and it goes like: Once upon a time there was a widow that lived alone with her beautiful young daughter, but this daughter was very lazy. One day, the old widow baked 5 kaaks (some sort of bread) and left them by the chimney to cool off. Her daughter was walking through the house when she saw them chilling by the chimney so she decided to take a piece and eat it. And after 10 minutes she came by for another piece, and so on until all the 5 whole breads were gone. When the old widow finished working, she called on her daughter to bring the bread so they would eat together, and that’s when the girl confessed what she had done. Her mother, furious, went out and continued working all the while singing this song whining about her daughter’s laziness (I don’t remember the song but it was something like “my daughter ate 5 full loafs of bread” or something like that). After a while, an expensive carriage passed by, and in it was the king of the land they lived in. The young man heard the old widow singing this beautiful song but couldn’t make out the words. So he came closer and asked the lady about those lyrics. The widow, ashamed of her daughter’s laziness changed the lyrics to something like “my daughter made 5 golden like, those weaving things idk what they’re called in one day”. The king, amazed, asked the old lady to send her daughter to the palace and told her that he’s marry her daughter if she could make him 5 of those golden weaving things for one year. Skip to when the girl finally arrives to the King’s castle. The king locks her in a room and tell her to make him give of those things for tomorrow or else he’d kill her (romantic much). Night came and the girl gave up on finding a way to make those things so she started crying. From her window came a little, ugly man that asked her why she was crying and she told him her story, so he made a deal with her. Everyday he’s being her 5 of those gold thingies and she’s have three chances to guess his name, if one year passes and she couldn’t guess his name, he’s take her firstborn child. And so one for months, every morning he’d bring her the 5 golden weaved things and she’s try to guess his name, but to no avail. By the time she was near the end of her one year sentence, she married the king and was pregnant with their child. One day before the end of the one year, the young woman was growing worried because she still couldn’t figure out the name of that little man. And that night, the king invited her to a dinner in the grand ball for pre-celebration of her release. They talked and talked, but the king could see that his wife was worried, he’d asked what was wrong but she’d say nothing. She asked him about his day and he told her about that funny thing that happened to him today while coming back from his hunting trip. He told her that he saw a funny young man dancing by the fire and singing an odd song “No one can guess my name it’s _-insert odd name here-_ “. The woman was elated. She finally figured out that little man’s name. That night, which was the last night of her weaving things for the king, she told the little man his name. The odd man, shocked by how she knew his name, fell on the floor and in a fit of anger, ripped himself to shreds. And the girl and her king (and their little baby girl) lived happily ever after... God I loved that book. Also if you made it this far, you’re the best! P.S: sorry if there is any typos I’m NOT proofreading that I’m too lazy to do so. Also, if he already talked about this in the video, I’m sorry I’m still in the beginning of the video and I’m NOT deleting that comment ever, it took way too long to write! Have a good day/ night ❤️
On the third day she's starting with Hinz and Kunz which is basically the German version of Tom, Dick and Harry. "Hinz und Kunz" are as far as I know only used in that saying, I never ever heard someone being called by these names. Btw they stand for Heinrich or short Heinz and Konrad. About Rumpelstilzchen name: rumpeln = to rumble Stelzen = stilts Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs) Stelzen is also linked to the German verb "stolzieren" which means to walk proudly. The story deals with narcissistic characters that use one another. The father wants to fool the king to get his daughter married to him, the daughter makes promises of giving her child away to save herself and the king is in for the gold. The most narcissistic character however is Rumpelstiltskin and he pays a price - dies by rumbling his short stilts (er rumpelt die Stilzchen).
Hinz und Kunz were the most common first names around the millenial (1000ad) in Germany. Over half of the male population had that name. If i would have to guess how a Person at that time is called i would go for Hinz (Shortform of Heinrich btw) or Kunz, too.
In the book I used to have the rhyme went something like..."Today I bake, tomorrow I'll clean. I'm going to take the child from the queen. She'll never win this little game, for Rumpelstiltskin is my name!"
In another book I have called Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales the rhyme goes... "Today do I bake, tomorrow I brew, The day after that the Queen's child comes in; And oh! I am glad that nobody knew That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin!"
The one I know from my german fairy tale book is: Ach wie gut dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß Ach wie gut dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß it actually rhymes but doesnt say as much roughly translated It is: Oh how good that no one knows, that my Name is Rumpelstilskin, Oh how good that no one knows, that my Name is Rumpelstilskin
@@noctilucera7585 there's actually a part before that which goes "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich, Übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind" Which is the same as "Today I bake, tomorrow I brew,..."
Totally agree with you Jon, Robert Carlyle's version of Rumpelstiltskin is definitely my favourite :) The writing on that show was so good at interweaving him into every fairytale as the REAL villain, behind the wicked stepmothers and evil queens, and dastardly pirates...(and then season 7 happened, but we don' talk about season 7) :)
Magic comes with a price, dearie! My favorite character on "Once Upon A Time" was Mr. Gold. When my sister first got into it she freaked out that I said that. Now she loves my impression of him.
Mr. Gold not only makes a great and complex character, he us also the embodiment of the Dark side of what Majik, or in fiction"magic" really entails, that anything provided comes at a cost from somewhere.....
I think not having loose lips is the actual moral. The father, daughter & Rumplestiltskin (also another trio) each had to face some consequence/regret for shooting their mouth off to/around the wrong person.
The song did get messed up in translation, I'm German and in the original he sings: Heute back ich, Morgen brau ich, Übermorgen stehle ich der Königin ihr Kind. Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß, Dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß. Still not the best song but at least it rhymed in the end.
Funny, i wanted to write the same. Translating from german can be quite difficult, and i once saw a fan translation of 7 Zwerge-Männer alleine im Wald. ironically the hunter scene was less offensive translated. ,,Bring me the Trapper" No, not the Rapper, the Trapper".
"Wife, how did you get him to call off the baby-taking?" "I just guessed his name, I swear!!! I didn't have to like... scream it out or fake any orgasms or anything..."
Off the top I agree: Robert Carlyle made me excited about the depths a fantasy can go in a way that I hadn't felt since childhood reading the classics (at least not with something other than Anime). His version added SO much depth to the character in the first few seasons!
@性爱Minniebby That is true, but I meant in a general sense; don't let others lie about you either (unknowingly or not) or problems will occur. Apologies for wording it a bit oddly in my initial comment. (• ▽ •;) I definitely do think the story meant for the father to look like a fool in some regard since, unless magic knowingly exists to the public and is accepted, who would feasibly say their daughter could spin gold from hay? He could've been seen as a lunatic, lol. It's a fairy tale and obviously there's magic involved but only with Rumpelstiltskin. Makes ya wonder what goes through the mind of some of these characters, haha.
In Once upon a time Rumpelstiltskin was just a simple man, a coward actually, and then he became "The Dark One" by stabbing the last Dark One with the Kris dagger (which is a half of Excalibur, and the perso who has it can control The Dark One), because he wanted to protect his son, Baelfire, from the ogres war, but then the power and the darkness overwhelmed him so he become evil, and later he lost his son through a portal in our world, and than after some years he went to a kingdom to make a deal with the king, that he'll make the king win the ogres war in exchange for his daughter, Belle (yes, from The Beauty and The Beast), so he can make her his maid forever, but after some time they fell in love! That's pretty much his story, and now the thing about him the girl who had to spin straw into gold: it happened long before he met Belle, and as this girl was locked in a tower, and told that if she doesn't turn the all the straw into gold by morning she'll be killed, and than, as Rumple has a weakness for deals, he appeared in the tower and told her that he'll do the job for her in exchange for her first born child, but she told him that she wants to learn how to do it, not just he to do it, so they made the deal, he kept visiting her on the castle, and after a while they fell for each other, so he asked her if she wanted to change the deal, so she wouldn't have to give her first born child to him anymore, she had to make a child with him, she agreed, but after some time she ripped her own heart out and put it in a box so she could not be able to feel again (there, the people with magic could've ripped hearts out without killing the respective people or themselves b as long as they keep the heart they could control the person), so she tricked him and married with the king, so she was the only one who broke a deal with him, oh and also the girl was named Cora, The Queen of Hearts which is also Regina's/The Evil Queen's mother, (the one from the Snow White fairy tale), if ye'd like to watch the series, know that there is a half of season about The Dark One! I recommend it! (P.S. Idk who needed to know that but I felt like had to explain it when I got the chance :)))))
I love the way you give old nursery rhymes the elaboration it needs. You bring these stories life and I'm a happy subscriber! 🫶🥰🫶. Greetings from Corpus Christi , Texas.
You should definitely read “Rump the true story of Rumpelstiltskin” in my opinion it is a very good and very magical book. it talks about how he discovered his full name and the power it has✨
The only show I liked better then that is supernatural check it out if you haven’t already the first 2 seasons are slow but then it gets really really good
Firstly, I completely agree with you about " Once Upon A Time". One of my favorite shows, and Rumpel, or "The Dark One" is a character that is constantly changing. Secondly, my favorite rendition of the story has to be Terry top. Great job!
Did anyone else only click on this because of the once upon a time with ouat. Im slightly obsessed with robert carlyle now. 😅😅. Also cuz jon solo. But i am obsessed with ouat

I always hated the story of Rumpelstiltskin (okay as a child it actually scared me) but as an adult it upset me because as John pointed out she wasn't a bad person but she wasn't good either... That's why I liked Duffy and the Devil story so much... Would not have even known that version existed if not for this chanel so thanks Jon.... I'm curious if you have read any of the fables graphic novels? If so what did you think?
It is said that only children have eyesight good enough to spin the finest of gold wires in the ancient style. I think the spinning part in the stories comes from some factual piece of history, maybe harkening back to a time when child labor was used (forced) to manufacture that wire.
Jesus Christ actually the fact that she can use slang comfortably shows she can speak English well, as opposed to being overly formal and sounding somewhat awkward.
My mum's not deaf, but she was learning sign language for a while, and my first experience of this story was watching a video cassette compilation as a child called "Story Time in Sign" where various stories were verbally narrated, as well as having a person on the screen signing the story and standing in front of (presumably) a green screen, where images to do with the story were shown. I don't know why, I just really enjoyed listening to the story and watching it in sign language as well. That's a particularly fond childhood memory of mine.
That's dope n I get it...wen I was in like 1st grade I got really into Greek mythology n i found a book of it in sign language n have always been interested in it since....I take taught some of my best friends in elementary school n we communicated all da time like across da cafeteria n stuff it was fun....I honestly wish it was like a second standard to know just to know pol... N the deaf community is pretty freakn awesome! They r some of da realist people u want to meet!
If I were to explain rumpelstiltskin’s relationship to every character in OUAT we would be here all day. Husband to belle, father to baelfire, grandfather to Henry Mills (who is the grandson of Snow White and Prince Charming, great grandson/adoptive son to Regina mills aka the evil queen), SON OF PETER PAN (who is evil) AND THE BLACK FAIRY, former lover of the queen of hearts (who is also the evil queen’s mother), and the list goes on. Love that you mentioned that version of the character
"Rumpelstiltskin"! :-D So funny! Didn´t know that! The name originally is "Rumpelstilzchen". That "chen" at the end is a minimization, meaning: "Little Rumpelstilz". "Rumpel" is onomatopoetical for something rumbling. The part "Stilz" is a real surname in Germany but the meaning of it is not known. So this man supposedly is Mr. Stilz who is often clattering around and Rumpestilzchen means "Little rumbling Stilz". Could be an opener in a horror series: Camera moves close to a doorbell with the name Stilz on it... Concerning the rhyme: In German it goes like this: "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich, übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind; ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!" That falls into two segments: "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich, übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind; " does not rhyme and is all about the rhythm and metric and the rule of three (today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow). "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich, " is trochaic (heavy-light: _ . ). "übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;" is complicated but emphasises "Kind" (child) in the metric this way: _ . . . _ The second segment "ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!" also deals with the trochaic metrum while "Rumpelstilzchen heiß" sticks out as "Königin ihr Kind" with the same metric (_ . . . _). But this segment on the contrary to the former rhymes (as can be seen): "weiß" (knows) with "heiß" (is my name). This little piece of poetry alone shows how well the Grimms where educated and skilled (as professors for German language). Hope you read this, Jon: I put a bit of brain cells in here! ;-)
And the version I remember goes; Today I brew, tomorrow I bake And then the child away I'll take. Little knows the royal dame That Rumplestiltskin is my name.
Sounds good, but it's a little simpler than that. About Rumpelstilzchen name: rumpeln = to rumble Stelzen = stilts Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs)
Rumplestiltskin and Captain Hook's Alligator from the original Grimm's Fairytales were combined into one amazing character for Once Upon a Time's Robert Carlyle to play with. He was brilliant.
I remember the little song he was singing so well... had a record of Grimms fairytales as a child "🎶🎶 Today I brew, tomorrow I bake-and then the queen's child I will take...🎶 For no one knows my little game - Rumplestilskin is my name!"🎶 See! That sounds much better and his truly creepy and has stuck with me for 50 years!
Another great video. I always loved the "Muppets Classic Theater" version of 'Rumpelstiltskin'. Piggy plays the Miller's Daughter/Queen, Kermit is of course the king, and his 'loyal royal advisor' is the one who throws her in the dungeons after her father fabricated that she could turn straw into gold just for a chance to speak with 'the sad and lonely king', threatening each time she would be thrown into the dungeon if she failed. Gonzo is of course the "Wierd Little Man" who helps her and when he arrives and makes the agreement he'll give her three days to come up with his name, she explains to the king, her father, and the advisor what really happened and King Kermit prevents her from being thrown in the dungeon, surprising both the advisor and Piggy's father "I didn't marry her for the gold, I married her becaus I love her!" The entire Muppet Kingdom then breaks into song about how they've "Got To Get That Name" as they try and try again over the next passing days. When Piggy says it's unfair, Gonzo replies, "If life where fair, would my mother have sent me to summer camp every year of my life? If life were fair, would I have been cursed with a name like..." he stops, realizing everyone's leaned in listening for his name and laughs at them, "You almost got me." Piggy suddenly realizes he said he'd been to summer camp and orders someone to grab him, she takes a peak at the tag on his shirt and says, "There you are Ralph Lauren! Oh, no, wait.... Rumpel... Your name is Rumpelstilkstkin?" He declairs it unfair and when Kermit asks how she knew, "Because every good mother sews her child's name into their clothes before sending them off to summer camp."
There's also another Grimm brothers' spinning gold tale, one of my favorites, where three deformed women help the girl with the condition to invite them to the wedding and call them "aunties", she goes through the deal, should read it
I remember choosing this story for storytelling lesson and I actually sang the silly song: Tomorrow I brew, today i bake, and the child away I take. For a little deem, my royal dame, That rumplestiltskin is my name! (better rhymes, at least)
I would say the moral of this strory is to not boast. The girl's father was boasting about her hair looking like gold in the sun/skill to turn straw into gold is what put her in the initial predicament and Runpelstiltskin boasting about how he'll win the deal soon revealing his name in the process was ultimately his downfall. It's perhaps not as explicit as most fairy tales but i'd say it's definetely there. I wish one of the revision added a little sonnet to that effect!
Rumplestilkin i didn't see the cartoon , i didn't know the vilain in shrek 4 was Rumplestilkin and i though the Rumplestilkin in the once upon a time was the beast😂 AND years later i learn who he is in a sketch on youtube from "studio c" it was very funny😂
But I never knew there was a scrapped Disney version of the story except Rumpelstiltskin is a BABYSITTER. Also, that character from Courage the Cowardly Dog which it's Muriel's "uncle".
Honestly my favorite part in the story 6:44 Although I remember the book I grew up reading had a different verse: "Tonight my cakes I bake Tonight my beer I make Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow The queens little baby I take Lucky I'll go as lucky I came For Rumpelstiltskin is my name"
In German the song he sings accually rimes :) "Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß'" "Oh so good that nobody knows, that my name is Rumpelstilzchen"
Um, I like to believe that the lesson is telling us that family is the real treasure. Like the the father gave up his daughter and his daughter gave up her child.... in return its riches and what not. In thee end the real gold is family... idk...
I think the most interesting modern retelling and my personal favorite: in elementary school I read a book called ‘Rumplestiltskin’s Daughter’. Basically in this version, when Rumple asks for her first born when she becomes queen, the Miller’s Daughter is like ‘nah, I don’t want to marry this jerk who locked me away and forced me to spin gold. But I like you, how about we get married?’ And they do and the rest of the story is about their daughter teaching the same king to not be greedy. Weird, but I always thought it was kind of sweet.
I love how give us insight in stories, but I miss the story "The three spinners"! (ATU 501) A lazy girls mother hit her because she didn't want to spin. The queen drove by and heard the screams. The mother didn't want to tell the queen that her daughter was lazy so she lied and told that she can't keep her daughter away from spinning. The queen took the girl to her palace and showed her 3 rooms full with flax to spin and told her if she had made this all into yarn she can marry her son the prince. After 3 days the queen showed up again and the girl hadn't spun anything. Her excuse was that she was home sick and missed her mother. The queen gave her another chance. Three old women showed up by the girl. One had a wide foot, the second had a big hanging bottom lip and the third had a very big thumb. The women will spin the flax if she invite them to her wedding. On the wedding day the three old women showed up and the prince was surprised how they were looking. He was told this was because of spinning flax. He was so shocked that he told his bride she must never in her life spin again. The end.
one of my favorite authors wrote a rumplestiltskin re-telling and it's so good. Instead of a human king, the MC lies to the Erl King (as in leader of The Wild Hunt) and tells him she can spin straw into gold as a way to distract him to protect two nymphs he was hunting. I love this version because it gives so much more life to all of the characters and makes the story really good (also, the character meant to be rumplestiltskin is literally the best version of him to exist ever.) The book series is the Gilded and Cursed duology by Marissa Meyer
The moral of Rumplestiltskin is clear enough: Always look for loopholes in your contracts, and exploit them without shame.
I first learned the word,"loophole,"from the first Rumplestiltskin cartoon I saw.(Fractured Fairy Tales)

I think the moral in the grim version was to avoid arrogance. The father's bragging almost doomed his daughter and rumple's gloating in the forest allowed the messenger to learn his name.
they were teaching kids and just ppl in general to use people and not pay up

I love delving into tales like this
Of course!
Yeah, why did the daughter have to pay?!
I remember asking my sister what was the moral of the story and she told me "Probably don't make deals you can't keep".
"Dont write a check your ass cant cash" is what my southern great grandma used to say
I get " rich people are never satisfied".
DeathSerpent "don't write checks your tush can't cash" is what I learned from Otto's dad on rocket power
I remember the saying"Don't let your mouth write a check your butt can't cash!"

Yup.
Once Upon a Time is an amazing TV series, and Rumplestiltskin is the best actor and character in the whole series. The way he say "Because we all know, every magic comes at a price!" has been imprinted forever in my mind. Absolutely stunning performance
"Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß,
dass Ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!"
I never realised that the song only works in german (edit: works in dutch and other northern european languages too!) and people who read the translated version missed out on an iconic rhyme.
He quotes lots of lazy translations. I'm sure they could have found a version that rhymes in English
Nah, the greek translators wrote a poem that rhymed. I don't remember what it was because I was 8 or 9 when I read it, but I do remember pissing my γιαγιά (grandma) off cause I kept singing it to her.

We don't know what's in there so our brain says " yeah no I'm cool let's stay over here"
shawn goff
Oh god I hate the dark.
It's never just the dark, it's what COULD be in the dark. Even if we can see a scary thing, sure it's still scary, but we can take the needed action to escape it while aware of where it is. As for the dark.. it surrounds you, and so could the things in it.
I think I just peed myself..
... That's deep...

Then as you told I just know the detail that all the artefacts she gave Rumpelstilzchen
We’re from her mother that died. also in the german Version i know the father after is really bitter cause he and his relatives are really poor and his daughter now married the kings son.
Also pretty creepy: in German the rhyme includes Rumpelstilzchen actually singing that he is planning to eat this child . Good research I just guess in Germany they added more details or maybe some got lost in translation.
ManGo away That’s the version I know too, I don’t even know where I heard it
Off topic, But I'm trying to learn german!
And didn't thought that he would eat it
I think the moral of Rumplestilskin is to not lie or brag about something that isn't true because you never know who will get hurt.
Don’t be a creepy father who brags about your daughters looks
And don’t exploit people’s problems to get something in return

Morgyn Kivimaa rumple brags about no one knowing his name and foolishly singing it aloud
The moral of the story is about the power someone has over you once they know your name

@@derpderpson8803 You may actually be right. In magical lore names (True names) have power. It's how you invoke or banish supernatural creatures. But I think modern depictions fixate on the "Don't brag" version of the moral.
I think the moral is don’t do deals with the devil
The lesson is “don’t write a check your ass can’t cash”.
Yeah. Don’t let your alligator mouth get your chicken ass in trouble.
Is how we used to talk to a boisterous loud mouth.
Pretty much huh.
Well!!!!!!
PRECISELY.
Actually, looking at todays world, that’s a good lesson to teach
In German he sings:
"Heute back ich
morgen brau ich
Übermorgen hol ich mir der Königin ihr Kind.
Ach wie gut das niemand weiß,
das ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß."
The last part is rhyming in german. Also the germans see the moral of Rumpelstiltsken, that you shouldn't make deals with the devil! It doesn't pay out well, because the queen can't find the solution on her own. ^^
Interesting, the 3rd line i remember as
“und das kind der königin klau ich“
wich does ryhme in german
+Jonny Q That would be so much better, but I remember it as "Übermorgen hol ich mir der Königin ihr Kind" too because I remember thinking that this sounded strange
how can she find the solution she either dies or doesn't i would pick the latter
AWESOME... Also look at my last name 🙂
I feel like the moral is if you have sensitive information that can result in a big pay off keep your mouth shut.
I sometimes find it difficult to see Rumplestiltskin as the _bad_ guy in all this. I feel like the king and the miller are the ones that screwed the poor girl over! Anywho, my favorite adaptation of the tale is the Britannica one.
agreed.
Simsala Grimm version is my childhood.
Rumpelstiltskin is wrong too, why tf would he want her baby? it's weird and suspect
I see Rumplestiltskin as the victim in this story. Not only did he help someone who was not even thankful enough to ask him his name but he was swindled out of his payment for his hard work. Since he is obviously quite ugly hes not going to be having children of his own so I can see why he would want one.
Oh another moral: don’t sing your name if someone needs to know your name
He was so happy because in the German translation he was going to eat the baby the next day
@@MoejiiOsmanTV damn wtf
In a creative writing class many years ago, we were asked to reimagine a well known story from a different point of view. I chose this one, and in mine, Rumplestiltskin was a sympathetic character who wanted the child to raise as his own and teach his craft to. ( I don't think I've read a version that says why he wants the child). I made the princess as a greedy and spoiled child who was prone to manipulation.
It was fun to look at it from a different perspective.
That's how I have always viewed the story.
Yeah I really never thought about that. chances are the young child may grow up to be as greedy as his father and become a bad ruler or Rumpelstiltskin was an alchemist and may have wanted to raise the boy as his apprentice.
In the version I was told as Child Rumpelstilzchen wanted to eat the Baby
I also know the version where he wants to eat the child.
The chanting around the fire seems like he‘s preparing a feast. „today i‘m brewing, tomorrow i‘m baking...“
Holy crap! I would love to read that!
Rumpelstiltskin aka The Dark One aka Beast is the most awesome OUAT character.
The trickster of heart
That entire series is genius.
Don't forget being the son of Peter Pan :P

I think the father or the King is the real Villain of this story than Rumpelstilskin.

There’s this version I read in Arabic when I was younger that was kind of similar to this and it goes like:
Once upon a time there was a widow that lived alone with her beautiful young daughter, but this daughter was very lazy.

About Rumpelstilzchen name:
rumpeln = to rumble
Stelzen = stilts
Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs)
Stelzen is also linked to the German verb "stolzieren" which means to walk proudly.
The last name of a friend of mine actually is Kunz.
Hinz und Kunz were the most common first names around the millenial (1000ad) in Germany. Over half of the male population had that name. If i would have to guess how a Person at that time is called i would go for Hinz (Shortform of Heinrich btw) or Kunz, too.
I Know the Term hinz und Kuntz, its very common in Berlin.
Thank you. In Dutch the name doesn’t make any sense
this is the best explanation i’ve ever seen
In the book I used to have the rhyme went something like..."Today I bake, tomorrow I'll clean. I'm going to take the child from the queen. She'll never win this little game, for Rumpelstiltskin is my name!"
In another book I have called Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales the rhyme goes...
"Today do I bake, tomorrow I brew,
The day after that the Queen's child comes in;
And oh! I am glad that nobody knew
That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin!"
at least its catchy
The one I know from my german fairy tale book is:
Ach wie gut dass niemand weiß,
dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß
Ach wie gut dass niemand weiß,
dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß
it actually rhymes but doesnt say as much
roughly translated It is:
Oh how good that no one knows, that my Name is Rumpelstilskin,

I think not having loose lips is the actual moral. The father, daughter & Rumplestiltskin (also another trio) each had to face some consequence/regret for shooting their mouth off to/around the wrong person.

It is said that only children have eyesight good enough to spin the finest of gold wires in the ancient style. I think the spinning part in the stories comes from some factual piece of history, maybe harkening back to a time when child labor was used (forced) to manufacture that wire.
as a german, attending english classes, I really admire ur vocabulary

Jesus Christ correct me If I am wrong, but I do believe that “your vocabulary” isn’t wrong
Suii Chann actually your is a possessive variation of you, ur is colloquial (slang) but understandable.
a hellenic pagan Oh okay, thanks :)
Loved Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/ Mr. Gold
Jess M Bobby Carlyle is an amazing actor. I love him in everything I’ve ever seen him in.

I agree with you about Once Upon a Time. I LOVE the Rumplestiltskin character as portrayed. And that series was amazing
yesssss Rumple from OuaT is the BEST, I'm glad you put him in the thumbnail otherwise I might not have clicked on this vid haha
@Vicodyn matter*
I was ready for this story to be covered by you and you didnt disappoint. Thank you.
When I hear Rumple the first thought of mine is Once Upon a time
SAME thats the best show lol
Concerning the rhyme: In German it goes like this:
"Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;
ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß,
dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!"
That falls into two segments:
"Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;
" does not rhyme and is all about the rhythm and metric and the rule of three (today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow).
"Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
" is trochaic (heavy-light: _ . ).
"übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;" is complicated but emphasises "Kind" (child) in the metric this way: _ . . . _
The second segment
"ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß,
dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!" also deals with the trochaic metrum while "Rumpelstilzchen heiß" sticks out as "Königin ihr Kind" with the same metric (_ . . . _).
But this segment on the contrary to the former rhymes (as can be seen): "weiß" (knows) with "heiß" (is my name).
This little piece of poetry alone shows how well the Grimms where educated and skilled (as professors for German language).
Hope you read this, Jon: I put a bit of brain cells in here! ;-)
And the version I remember goes;
Today I brew,tomorrow I bake
And then the child away I'll take.
Little knows the royal dame
That Rumplestiltskin is my name.
@@richardranke7878 I would say a good translation wich puts a rhyme where originally none was.

Sounds good, but it's a little simpler than that.
About Rumpelstilzchen name:
rumpeln = to rumble
Stelzen = stilts
Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs)
oh, bummer. I thought you said "Rumpelforskin"..
oh, too...If you pull his hoodie down three times, he'll spit on you.
Why would he need the skin around your neck?? Eegh.
@@dankshadow7101 Um
*whispers* Someone doesn't get the circumcision joke...
Why would he take the skin off they're neck when he could cut off someone's foreskin? That would be more fitting for his name! Lmao xD
Rumplestiltskin and Captain Hook's Alligator from the original Grimm's Fairytales were combined into one amazing character for Once Upon a Time's Robert Carlyle to play with. He was brilliant.
Totally agree. Once Upon A Time is awesome and he is the best Rumpelstiltskin!
To quote Lisa Simpson; "There is no moral! It's just a bunch of stuff that happens."

I remember the little song he was singing so well...
had a record of Grimms fairytales as a child "🎶🎶 Today I brew, tomorrow I bake-and then the queen's child I will take...🎶
For no one knows my little game -
Rumplestilskin is my name!"🎶
See! That sounds much better and his truly creepy and has stuck with me for 50 years!

That is NOT Sweeden. That's Sweeden AND Norway! :/
Rumpel... Your name is Rumpelstilkstkin?"
He declairs it unfair and when Kermit asks how she knew, "Because every good mother sews her child's name into their clothes before sending them off to summer camp."
I really love your sarcasm and facial expressions, Jon! So entertaining! Keep it up! 👍🏻
I had a crush on Rumpelstilskin in Once Apon A time. Yeah I...IDK either
There's also another Grimm brothers' spinning gold tale, one of my favorites, where three deformed women help the girl with the condition to invite them to the wedding and call them "aunties", she goes through the deal, should read it

I’m so sry I couldn’t resist
I remember choosing this story for storytelling lesson and I actually sang the silly song:
Tomorrow I brew, today i bake, and the child away I take.
For a little deem, my royal dame,
That rumplestiltskin is my name!
Whenever someone or something read “dearie” I swear to you I read it in the dark ones accent
Rumplestilkin i didn't see the cartoon , i didn't know the vilain in shrek 4 was Rumplestilkin and i though the Rumplestilkin in the once upon a time was the beast😂
AND years later i learn who he is in a sketch on youtube from "studio c" it was very funny😂
But I never knew there was a scrapped Disney version of the story except Rumpelstiltskin is a BABYSITTER.
Also, that character from Courage the Cowardly Dog which it's Muriel's "uncle".
Chris !!! Oh my gosh!!! Same here!! I had a book about him but I did watch the studio c sketch!!!!
I just can’t understand why they made Rumplestilkstin into the Beast and why is he tall and not a dwarf?
@@willlyon7129 robert Carlyle is not tall. He is only 5'8".
He's also in the movie Happily never after.
Honestly my favorite part in the story 6:44
Although I remember the book I grew up reading had a different verse:
"Tonight my cakes I bake
Tonight my beer I make
Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow
The queens little baby I take
Lucky I'll go as lucky I came
For Rumpelstiltskin is my name"
In German the song he sings accually rimes :)
"Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß, dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß'"
"Oh so good that nobody knows, that my name is Rumpelstilzchen"
I was singing this in the tone of die woodys fichtl's lied haha
Robert Carlyle deserved an Emmy for his portrayal of Rumpelstiltskin
Remember dearie, all magic comes with a price
I love all your videos and this one was no different. I really love the way you go about explaining it. Could you please do Hansel and Gretel next?
Um, I like to believe that the lesson is telling us that family is the real treasure. Like the the father gave up his daughter and his daughter gave up her child.... in return its riches and what not. In thee end the real gold is family... idk...
but the daughter got gold AND family in the end.......
(ATU 501)
A lazy girls mother hit her because she didn't want to spin.
The end.
will do a Messed up Origins of the Wizard of Oz films? Specifically the Return to Oz?
one of my favorite authors wrote a rumplestiltskin re-telling and it's so good.
YES! thank you Jon!
