I am a Hungarian music teacher. I guess I can judge the performance of Tsuji of this piece as an absolutely perfect interpretation in the most correct and fine Hungarian style. I haven't so far heard any other pianist, maybe even Hungarian, to feel Liszt's rhapsody style so perfectly as Tsuji.
I've listened to many interpretations of this piece and this is for me the best one by far. The pianist does not only play, he tells a story. And his art of storytelling is amazing. The fact that he is blind makes it even more brilliant.
I think this is one of the best emulations ever to be performed for the Hungarian rhapsody no.2, not to mention by somone who hasn't been gifted like most of us. You have my deepest respect and you are an inspiration for me and many others into playing the piano. Thanks for this video.

For a student of piano, especially a blind student, to reach this level of understanding, interpretation and technical performance aspect of it, I must admire the many of his anonymous (to us) teachers he had. One thing that astounds me about his performance is the clarity, color and tonal quality of the piano sounds that he produces consistently. He must had a teacher who was fussy about the sound quality aspects also, hard to get even in conservatories of great fame.

WHAT A BRILLIANT and REFRESHING take on a spectacular Masterpiece! I would bet the composer is dancing among the stars for such a brightly sparking performance!!! REFRESHING!

I followed the whole sheet music while nobu was playing. It was hard but Beautiful. I felt like I was watching diferent pictures of a story while hearing what happened. Brilliant, Every note, every indication, It was just perfect. Hungarian Rhapsody was written by Listz. TO BE PLAYED BY NOBU!!!
This was just the most amazing video I have ever seen, How is it possible for a human to play such a piece visionless, that just prooves right there that there is no need for your eyes at piano, but feelings and probably hearing, although I don't know how Beethoven did it..... It's fascinating to see him feel about the keys, but so quickly it's like he is seeing via his fingers. And consider everything he plays he has to learn by hearing it alone. NEVER can he use a score. Amazing.
Oh I see. So he reads braille music? Still, it probably takes much more effort than pianist with normal eye sight. I can't watch him play without shedding some tears. He is truly inspirational.
Worth noting he doesn't use braille music as often because there isn't that much braille sheet music available (especially for technical pieces). He has assistants play the left/right hand for pieces for him, so he listens to his assistant's recordings, learns the notes by ear, then adds his own interpretation to it; that's how he's learned the majority of his pieces. It takes him between a few days to a month or more to learn new pieces by ear.

This man is wonderful to watch. Very inspirational. We will be seeing a great deal of him, in the near future. The competition was great this year and is really becoming a world event. I am still waiting for another Ciburn to come through!! Maybe in 2013!

you cant even compare this talent hes doing the impossible. as if its not difficult enough to complete a giant leap with your peripheral vision, he does it completely blind, several times successfully.
It's a shame I didn't discover him until now. No three dimensional word could ever express how his playing makes me feel inside. It's a shame the piano was out of tune in the higher range at 6'09" and 6'14" but who cares? Imperfection makes his performance perfectly human and endearing!
What most people disregard with this piece was that it, like any other Liszt piece, was meant to be a springboard for improvisation. Every time I see someone play it verbatim I just shake my head. One of these days I'll see someone do this song justice.

You might have UNDERLINED the first thee words (developing the ability) -our brain is so powerful, it can easily do that. The human brain is like a sleeping giant. Awaken it, and see what happens!

A man that conducts their own symphony without any brilliance is far from a good one.
i think there is some mutual miscommunication and misunderstanding here. i believe what mike is trying to say is that the consummate musician has both great compositional and performance skill, two completely different things. and i agree with that. take joe hisaishi for example; a remarkable composer, pianist, and conductor.

well I agree with you, but this mike character has a long history of bashing all pianists, claiming that no one can play true piano because of some nonsense that all the pianists cheat at the end of a certain Hungarian rhapsody by Liszt. Then he goes and says that only good pianists can compose and play music. As far as I am concerned anyone with the ability, skill, talent and raw emotion to captivate their audience is a great pianist, renowned pianists just do that well to audiences worldwide.

Hamelin's cadenza for the #2 should be a standard now. As if the #2 wasn't crazy enough, Hamelins addition makes it insane!
