He was trained in the school of Gospel! An interview was linked to me bc of this video. He started at 7 years old playing the traps at a church where he met the guitarist when he was older. He still performs at the church on Sundays but plays the organ!

The bands history is interesting. He spent most of his drumming career drumming at churches, so he's got history, consistency, and years of practice.

Just discovered this band (thanks, TH-cam algorithms) and couldn't agree more on the groove. It's so tight. Anyone can flail around like an octopus behind the kit, but when you pare it down to something so simple, can you still make it sound good? That's the genius of Donald Johnson.

I‘ve watched this video four times today. It‘s magic on so many levels. Even, or maybe especially for a non-drummer like me. I‘ve listened to the band for a couple of days. And didn’t even realize there was a drummer, or that he was of any importance.
And then you came. You listen to the stuff for 10 seconds and make the impression that you‘ve just seen/heard the Lord himself. Great to see that reaction, great to see how genious appreciates genious. And you found the right words for your discovery right away. Well done

my bro-in-law just recommended this to me, he was seeing them live in NYC a few nights ago. I fell in love within 3-4 bars. Couldn't put my finger on why the drums sounded so amazing consider how simple the groove was. You helped me understand why it sounded so epic. You gotta love how low key the entire band is. I really love that DJ plays so softly, but still has great tone. Rock and metal drummers need to listen to this guy to understand dynamics. You do not have to hit the drums hard to sound good. Same with guitar and bass - it doesn't have to be LOUD to sound good.

  • @dvldog_

Oh, and DJ is the definition of Zen playing...... In an interview he said he started playing drums about age 7 and stopped at 18 because there were so many great drummers in Houston! When Mark and Laura asked him to join he was cool about playing as long as he didn't have to play any drum solos...... And on their hip-hop-funk-pop medley he plays drums with one hand the keyboard with the other on Regulate...

This song has real meaning , It's about All Iranian women who like most other women in the world had as many rights as men , Voting divorce child custody veil wearing choices , From 1925-1979 when the bad men said plain and simply NO to all , This song pays respect & is also very sad of a time gone by , Almost a reverse of Good to bad instead of Bad to good , The actual vid of Maria Tambien shows many of the women dancing away ,

Here’s an unfortunate fact about reaction videos. Watch every one of them on TH-cam. Hundreds of them. Send me one where they said they didn’t like what they just watched. Doesn’t exist. The person is making these videos.doesn’t want to risk alienating anyone so they can’t say they don’t like something. So these reaction videos are fun to watch the reaction but there’s no honesty to them. It’s like watching, a man do a survival show and then find out he stays in hotels at night rather than in the shelter that he supposedly built to sleep in for the night.

while i think this is GREAT music and does require a type of skill... just not a physical or super super practice based one...
The difficulty lies in the kit sound for the drummer and the relies also on the drummer having listening experience in that area as well.
All good drummers should have good timing, ability to repeat static phrases consistently, if needed, and the ability to play at quiet volumes. I dont think thats a huge ask when comparing this with anything else of calibre. Those skills dont make this song/band unique or hard if we are talking about comparing it to other practiced, purposeful and experienced drummers playing.
So like I said, I really see the difficulty being the overall drum sound (tuning, head choice, accessories) and making sure it sounds right for the vibe of the music. I think that thats more a sign of maturity. Its really not THAT esoteric. Its only about as esoteric as the genre itself.
I am fairly certain any GOOD drummer with listening experience of this genre put behind that same sounding kit could produce something similar with some (not an unconscionable amount) practice.
Its the experience with the genre and the right kit, not ability that is required here.
Note choice and placement is a skill for sure but its more a sign of musical maturity ( a non musician can have musical maturity just like most art critics arent famous artists) than it is practice or ability.
But all this said and done, it really doesnt have to be easy OR hard. its just Art. I think telling people off that may say its easy is just as bad as saying its hard. its not a competition lol. its probably hard for someone coming from a completely different background and easy for someone that isnt. simple.
We dont know that donald johnson isnt RIPPED baked and half asleep playing this (for example). MAYBE, for him, its about the vibe not the difficulty and he may not even see it as difficult where as he may not be able to play a purdy shuffle for his life! (hypothetical examplel)
Leave the music as a difficulty competition stuff to the genres that, quite honestly, knowingly spar in that arena. Genres like metal and big band.
Alright I am ready for my hate comments.
