I really think that fishing should be used as a form of therapy for mental health. I have used it to escape my problems ever since i was a young lad. I've always had a dream of one day teaching people to fish opening a fishery/rehab centre to help people with mental health issues. Glad to see you bounce back

    Bless you Dean.
I know exactly where your coming from!
I had a hard bringing up & fishing has always been my release too! I've been diagnosed with BPD & agraphia spent most of my life out my tree & three of my 4 kids have autism & ADHD it's bloody hard!
I have no friends anymore. My old mates just don't want to know!
I've recently got into sea fishing, from 35 years chasing big Carp!
I struggle with no one to talk to, but I'm still here!!
    & Catching every session!

Dean it's so good of you to be so open and honest it's what more men especially need to do. I've had Multiple sclerosis for 20 years now and what goes hand in hand with it is depression and its chronic. I'm on medication for it but it helps but never takes it away. I've had to try and cope in different ways like getting back into sea fishing wish I gave up for probably 15 years and slowly getting back to it. So all in all a great video well done.

I have been watching your more recent videos and learning lots, thank you. I hadnt realised you had been dealing with all this and appreciate your honesty and bravery to talk so frankly about all the tough times you have endured and glad you seem to be on the road to a better place. I think a doggy a cast is possibly the most challenging of them all!😀

Hi Dean, a great vid, & thank you for opening up about mental health it can’t have been easy for you, I have mental health issues, and my release is sea fishing, I did carp fishing for just under 30yrs, and before that sea fishing since was a kid, I’ve always had depression and anxiety from the age of 13, but didn’t realise it was that, but, the same as you, fishing was my release, I got married, in the early 80’s to a wonderful woman, I have 3 amazing adult children, & I’m a grandfather of 4 little ones, but in 2004, my wife had a rare autoimmune disease, that would eventually take her sight, & then went onto develop cancer, through out her illness she kept working, & I kept fishing, she understood that I needed that time to myself, she would encourage me to go fishing, even though I felt guilty about leaving her at home, she was having chemo, & she went into remission twice, but unfortunately it came back, & this time she couldn’t beat it, she passed away a week after we were told that the cancer has returned more aggressively, I didn’t cry for two weeks, not even at her funeral, I couldn’t understand why I didn’t cry, I realised I was bottling all up, I thought fishing could be the cure to what I was feeling, it wasn’t, I needed to talk to someone, anyone that would understand what I was going through, I’m on medication to help with the depression and anxiety, which doesn’t work all the time, my mother has vascular dementia, my dad is in hospital, and I’ve had to take care of her, which is incredibly hard, and it’s caused my mental health to deteriorate immensely, I’ve had to remove myself from that situation, & we now have a care package in place that takes a lot of pressure off me, & I can get back to what I love the most, besides my love for my family, Sea fishing, I’m sorry for the long txt, but as they say it’s good to talk 🎣🎣🎣

I have just watched this Dean and I always had you as a happy go lucky lover of life. As someone who suffers from the Black Dog myself at times I couldn't recognise that in you in the previous vids of you I have been looking at.
I started watching your stuff two weeks ago and two weeks ago my life turned inside out hence why I watched yourself to take my mind off the worst thing that has ever happened in my life.
Last year my wife and I retired to Ireland as she and I love greyhound racing and greyhounds as a breed and I could train a couple of greys myself over here. I even trained a winner.
Then the bombshell hit I found my darling wife collapsed but conscious on the bedroom floor two Saturdays ago . She was rushed to Kilkenny Hospital where they found a bleed on her brain and she had a stroke. She was then rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin which is the centre of excellence in all Ireland for bad cases. Thankfully she is now out of immediate danger and has been transferred back to Kilkenny to have physio and speech therapy .
She cannot speak very much and she is weak in her right leg. But she is a fighter and she will pull through hopefully but it will take time. My race dogs are now gone given to friends to race as I couldn't give the time to look after properly now. I have still got my retireds as pets.
I couldn't sleep at first and I could feel that Black Dog beginning to stalk me. Then I came across your vids by chance . I was looking for something on Lavernock as until we moved we had a chalet at The Marconi and I wanted to see the sandspit again where I would take my retired greys for a run. Your stuff was brilliant and helped switch off while watching you.
Tonight I watched this after coming back from the hospital and by you being so brave and telling your story you have pulled me back from that spiral of depression and who knows what else .
You are one inspiring man and I thank you with all my heart .
      All the very best mate.
      DOGGIES !!
      Tight lines
      Jeff x

I have also been in a dark place which lock down forced me to confront, drug addiction which was masking problems from my youth . Iam 54 and have been carrying and masking my problems for close to 40 years . To be honest the outcome wasn't what I expected I've lost some very close people, but at the end of the day I am better off now , anyway thanks for posting this and I wish you and the ones you love all the best and keep them fish and video's coming 🙏

Mate sorry to hear this. I have watched loads of your videos and you are one of the best fisherman on YT. I really enjoy your content, but I can't belive I have only just seen this video. I can really relate to so much that you have gone through. I have just been diagnosed my self with a serious mental health condition. Fishing has always been my escape. I too had a kid at 16. I also have two autistic sons. My youngest memphis (7) is non verbal and is profoundly autistic and is a handful, but I wouldn't change him for the world. I just lost my dad 6 months ago who I was really close with, then a month after, my wife wanted to split. Similar to you, it all hits at once. I too am Welsh! Dad's from Treorchy mums from Cardiff. I was born in Plymouth though! How unlucky is that lol. We have set up a charity to help autistic kids. If you needed any help or advice, give us a shout. You want to go fishing? Also give us a shout. I can put you onto some fish here in Cornwall.
Chin up dude. You always got us lot as mates. Keep up the great work bruva. Much love

hit home this 1. Unfortunately a family member of mine and fellow fisherman was going through similar to how you have described in your video, sadly no one got to him in time before it was too late. Always kept his emotions internalised and wasn't able to reach out. As a man in this world it takes a lot of balls to 1 admit you need help and an even bigger set of balls to ask for it. Never be afraid to talk, chances are someone close to you has or is also going through similar. Great that your coming out the other side of it stronger and healthier, long may it continue.

Dean you should never be ashamed of taking about your problems. As someone that is a few years on you I grew up in a inviramant of you'll be OK just pick yourself up . Well OK but always remember when you go to that darkened room with the key only you have there's always someone on the outside trying to help even you may not see it there is . Don't get rapped up with people only listen to the ones that have always been there for you like your wife and always remember you my not see this but look at the positively in your life your wife your son's there the one's that count I have my room that I go to don't ever think your alone always remember someone else is in there room and it's generally the one's you'd never think should be stay strong chap

You didn't need to catch a fish to make that video a success Dean!. Well done, it cant have been easy to open up like that, but if it makes one person think they need to talk to someone you've cracked it. Nice to see you making videos again fella.

I can only say what everyone else has well done. took real balls to come out with what you said. I bet there are lots of us who have only faced part of what you honestly said and perhaps now we can start to deal with these, while fishing is the great escape.

Hit me this, thanks for sharing mate. I spend every night watching fishing videos and tend to watch yours all the time. Big thing I found as a distraction is the gym.

Do you ever fish West Wales? Let me know if you're ever here and fancy some company. You could definitely teach me a lot about sea fishing 😉 I could even leave the rods at home and just come fora chat.
