I even appreciate the fireball more than if it was a prefect landing, since it did add to my adranaline rush. And since I know it was a minor failure that caused that crash landing, I'm ready to bet my piggy bank against anybody that Elon will get this thing done before Christmas ... that will be our gift from our new Santa Claus ...
Take off = successful MECO = Successful Belly flop = Successful Cruising back to landing pad = successful Engine restart = Successful Landing = 30% Test is successful, gathering data for a mores accurate test. Congratulations to spaceX, they delivered on promise.
the problem is that getting people to Mars alive requires perfection, not only "near perfect" but this is fine for what the flight SN8 was supposed to be

@Tim Jacuzzi Raptor 42 wasnt supposed to relight during landing because 3 engines relight would have been to much thrust to land. It was only the loss of pressure that prevented a perfect landing.

Well of course we were all questioning it but as it moved through it all seemed pretty planned, like how the engines "prepped" the shut down by shifting its weight and the ones that shut down instantly moved to max gimbal to clear the way for the others to have room to finish up. Absolutely amazing!
well, everyone thought 2 engine failed in the middle of the flight but both 'failed' engines were ignited during landing burn. Elon later tweeted it planned to do so.
I thought that at first also, but after rewatching a couple times, I realized they were also testing what if scenarios, would it remain stable/flyable/controllable with a failed engine or 2. They may have succeeded slowing it down if they flipped 2 seconds earlier. They hit the ground before the legs even deployed.
Even if they don't, they will roll out SN-10 and try again, Elon mentioned somewhere that he thought they would be in the middle-teens before they got it truly right!
Great job everyone at NASASpaceflight. Footage and tracking is amazing, and so is the editing. Loved the commentary on the live stream also. And incredible engineering work from the entire Space-X team.

What a massive testing success. When you only fail a few final items out of a long list of things that could go wrong on an idea that is unproven, that is a massive win. This is a massive demonstration of a proof of concept and showing the idea is indeed viable! The transition in between phases of flight was surprisingly smooth, the vehicle looks confident in the switching of configurations, I fully expected it to be “twitchy” like a learner driver but no. Onwards and upwards with the program! Congratulations to SpaceX and the Starship team.

The fuel header tank had some anomaly causing low tank pressure which resulted in the touchdown to be quite fast. These are not my own keyboard analysis, Thats from elon, so if you have issues with these, ask him not me 😅✌ But even if I dont have all the information, the fact it blew up means yes, I am certain something in this enitre test regime has failed.

So in under 5 years Space has made many test prototypes of the Starship yet SLS hasn't even flown yet. Also I loved the whole thing. That swing maneuver, I thought it was never gonna work. Go Space and go SN9.
There is no such thing as failure, only moments of extreme teaching/learning. You learn more in one moment of failure than you can in a year of theoretical study. I love what SpaceX is doing!
I'll admit it, I doubted when I saw the swing landing maneuver - that is, I thought it would be such a quick whipping motion it would be scary. But I was astonished at how smoothly and slowly it descended. Of course it'll be a while before us civilians are able to ride one, but it doesn't seem like it would be so G intensive anymore.
I want to, even if it is a little violent. I imagine passenger flights would ignite the engines much early and have a larger surplus of fuel for the slower landing. And then, it falls so slowly, maybe parachutes and inflatable bumpers would allow it to land safely even with no engines.

The eventual plan is to use hot gas thrusters to do the flip maneuver instead of the engines. This will make it very smooth...but thats gonna be a whole other test series since those thrusters are still in development.
Elon Musk: "Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough." I can't help thinking of the massive data harvest here. Pioneering is exciting.
This craft is about half the size as a C-5 Galaxy, flying with an engine array intended to operate it in the thinner atmosphere and lower gravity of Mars.

Stunning. We've been waiting so long for this moment to arrive, and it finally came! It was really exciting to watch the world's largest bullet collide with the ground in a fantastic fireball, and they came super close, more so than I fully expected.
Thank you for not negating a very productive test with the usual doom and gloom. Listen to the ecstatic response of everyone on site watching the test. They understand the significance of the performance as a victory for confirming flight principles. The explosive ending was but a bonus. Hey, that fireball was epic! Besides, so much went right with this test, that the ending hardly matters. Cheers!

I found out about the SpaceX around six months ago and had read about them making a spaceship called the starship. Looked into it and I have been watching the development of starship SN8 for a while now. She had grown to be my favorite spaceship, and it would make me happy to look back on When any news would pop up on her, or any new developments were made on her, or anything was added to her. Yesterday I got to watch her earn her wings and I am so proud to have witnessed it. Going to miss her. Love you SN8! I’ll remember you when I make my official astronaut oath. I’m headed to Mars, baby!! 😎

Yeasss Bitchhhh, I love seeing people thinking outside of this Earth. My best saying is the dream and think Universally large. Scientist can't even measure the entire universe. If you manifest something to scale of a skyscraper, it would greatly blow away you little Earth-like dreams the size of a house. Expect nothing and leave only room for gratitude for what comes. One of the most amazing things in aviation I have seen in my life. It is clear SpaceX has the best software engineers on the planet and I suspect their electrical and mechanical peeps are very close. I live in Australia and was lucky to watch this live with my son, your live feed was excellent and your enthusiasm was something my 14yo son could grasp onto. Thanks heaps.

Technically was a perfect test including landing. SpaceX didn't specify the touchdown/landing force. So, it checks out.

There is no such thing as failure, only moments of extreme teaching/learning. You learn more in one moment of failure than you can in a year of theoretical study. I love what SpaceX is doing!

I'll admit it, I doubted when I saw the swing landing maneuver - that is, I thought it would be such a quick whipping motion it would be scary.
But I was astonished at how smoothly and slowly it descended. Of course it'll be a while before us civilians are able to ride one, but it doesn't seem like it would be so G intensive anymore.
I want to, even if it is a little violent. I imagine passenger flights would ignite the engines much early and have a larger surplus of fuel for the slower landing.
And then, it falls so slowly, maybe parachutes and inflatable bumpers would allow it to land safely even with no engines.
Coming from 0g's and 147mph/66m/s to 1g and 0mph/0m/s in such a short time will not be for the faint hearted~

The eventual plan is to use hot gas thrusters to do the flip maneuver instead of the engines. This will make it very smooth...but thats gonna be a whole other test series since those thrusters are still in development.

This craft is about half the size as a C-5 Galaxy, flying with an engine array intended to operate it in the thinner atmosphere and lower gravity of Mars.

Was there (hwy 48 ) saw it up close felt it and got my own footage and this video still gives me goose bumps !! Amazing !!

Mary You are a DIVA. Your filming is amazing. I'm sure your heart was racing, the ground was shaking, and it was extremely loud. Jack. You're not a diva but your filming was incredible. Congrats to SpaceX, but especially to the NSF team. The camera angles were unique and gave different views of a historic event. Next flight, I expect to see Jack in a camouflaged kayak, and Das with an extra set of eyes!! (to see all the many camera views) I really enjoyed the coverage and the commentary. Stunning. We've been waiting so long for this moment to arrive, and it finally came! It was really exciting to watch the world's largest bullet collide with the ground in a fantastic fireball, and they came super close, more so than I fully expected.

Thank you for not negating a very productive test with the usual doom and gloom. Listen to the ecstatic response of everyone on site watching the test. They understand the significance of the performance as a victory for confirming flight principles. The explosive ending was but a bonus. Hey, that fireball was epic! Besides, so much went right with this test, that the ending hardly matters. Cheers!

I found out about the SpaceX around six months ago and had read about them making a spaceship called the starship. Looked into it and I have been watching the development of starship SN8 for a while now. She had grown to be my favorite spaceship, and it would make me happy to look back on When any news would pop up on her, or any new developments were made on her, or anything was added to her. Yesterday I got to watch her earn her wings and I am so proud to have witnessed it. Going to miss her. Love you SN8! I’ll remember you when I make my official astronaut oath. I’m headed to Mars, baby!! 😎

Yeasss Bitchhhh, I love seeing people thinking outside of this Earth. My best saying is the dream and think Universally large. Scientist can't even measure the entire universe. If you manifest something to scale of a skyscraper, it would greatly blow away you little Earth-like dreams the size of a house. Expect nothing and leave only room for gratitude for what comes. That's it.
Outstanding test! Breathtaking how fast Starship development is advancing. Space-X has flight/component/systems data for the entire duration of a "nearly" nominal first flight!

One of the most amazing things in aviation I have seen in my life. It is clear SpaceX has the best software engineers on the planet and I suspect their electrical and mechanical peeps are very close. I live in Australia and was lucky to watch this live with my son, your live feed was excellent and your enthusiasm was something my 14yo son could grasp onto. Thanks heaps.
