  • This is rental car number 143 and today I'm driving the 2020 Buick Enclave Essence. This is a mid-size crossover SUV that I rented from Enterprise.
    Type: mid-size crossover suv
    Year: 2020
    Make: Buick
    Model: Enclave
    Trim: Essence
    Exterior Paint: Ebony Twilight Metallic
    Interior: Black Leather Seats
    Wheels: 18" painted aluminum wheels
    MSRP: $43,130
    Extras: Power moonroof with rear fixed skylight (an extra $1,400) and front license plate bracket which Buick charges an extra $40 for(what!?!).
    Drivetrain: all wheel drive
    Engine: 3.6-liter V6 engine DOHC
    Transmission: 9-speed automatic transmission
    Horsepower: 310 hp at 6,800 rpms
    0 to 60: Not great.
    Fuel Type: regular unleaded
    MPG City: 18 mpg
    MPG Highway: 25 mpg
    Combined MPG: 20 mpg
    Fuel Cap Location: driver's side
    Fuel Tank Capacity: 22 gallons
    How does it drive?
    Handling at low speeds: Not great. I was very unhappy with the turning radius on the Enclave.
    Handling at high speeds: Good. The vehicle handled well at higher speeds, although I didn't feel completely comfortable and found myself slowing down before entering turns.
    Acceleration from a stop: Decent. The V6 performs well but I didn't feel like the Enclave was fast. It took longer than expected to get up to high speeds.
    Acceleration while moving: Good, the V6 is super responsive.

    Hello! Three quick things. One, I've started publishing my rewritten prep as a blog entry. Check it out here: 100rentalcars.co/2020-buick-enclave/ I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I can make it better. Two, my next rental is the 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible. It's amazing! Video up by next weekend...I hope. And three, sorry to be so negative on this one. But I think the Enclave is WAAAAAY to expensive for what you get. If you think I'm wrong, let me know! I'm open to changing my mind. Thanks all!

    Hi, been enjoying your reviews as I also rent almost every week from National/Enterprise. One correction: I've rented the Enclave and it's a Premium Crossover (PGAR) because it has 3 rows, not a intermediate SUV. Intermediate SUVs are Escape/Rogue/RAV4/Tucson.
    I have generally been avoiding GM vehicles lately because Enterprise doesn't order them in high trim levels and they lack features like Automatic Emergency Braking or Adaptive Cruise Control that other automakers offer as standard.

      It did, right? I'm not sure that was the "full" horn. And I do like stronger, more manly sounding horns. It's a small thing, but I hate it when my car sounds like a gentle "ummmm excuse me" rather than a "HEY, WATCH YOURSELF!"

    • @chocolatewheelchair

      100 Rental Cars the Japanese eco cars like Honda have terrible city horns. High octave range. When you’d lock the Infiniti you’d hear a horn sound but that’s a higher tone than the real horn which is deep and has more bass in it. Feels good to lay into it. I like when your critical of the cars you test. You have a lot to compare things directly to each other. That’s good stuff right there.

      I was just at a "no haggle" well know dealer chain today looking at the 2020 Enclave Essence in leather. I did like the look of it a lot, it looked more like a luxury vehicle. I agree that it feels like it's missing some stuff for $40k but then again, I couldn't pin-point what more I would have wanted - maybe air cooled seats, or a better entertainment package, (?). Also, just for reference, Buick has a deal right now through Sept 30, 2020, Enclaves are $6k off. So the Enclave Essence in leather (with the sunroof) is $38,758 plus taxes, and tags (which for me would be ($3600).

    @Brandon-xp1ob 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Surprising about the wind noise since I thought Buick was on par or surpassed Lexus in cabin quietness. Past buicks were not exciting cars but they were reliable. Then again Buick isn't really going for sportiness here. Also, I don't know how a 3 row, over 200 inch long cuv is miss size. This thing is full sized. Period. I love buicks but they're SUVs are getting really bland. The enclave us nice but true for over 40k I would want nicer wheels. Those wheels look like they belong in a car half the price.

    My brother liked the Enclave he rented for the most part, but he was very annoyed that there was no button or menu selection to disable Auto Stop/Start. I researched that, and indeed... it's full-time, no way to disable it. There are several places on the Internet that sell devices that claim to disable the auto stop/start, but there are questions about what those would do to the vehicle warranty. I researched the Enclave because I was considering that to replace my Avalon Hybrid (I didn't need an SUV/crossover when I bought the Avalon, but I have a need for one now), and my biggest negative was the gas mileage. There are other options "out there" that get better mileage. Even the sibling GMC Acadia that trimmed down for 2017 gets better mileage than the Enclave due to its significantly lower weight.

    I think you're mentality is incorrect when reviewing this vehicle particularly if you're comp is a GLC 300. The enclave is a entry level 3 row luxury SUV. To my knowledge all GLC are 2 row. Naturally because of the length (20" longer) and weight (600# heavier) it's going to ride and accelerate differently.
    As for the interior they clearer heard the feedback from the previous gen and have the new ones a cleaner more streamlined interior. The better models also change things as well as they include different driving modes, and plenty more features including a different dash display. We test drove the Avenir recently (quite nice for $48k btw) and were impressed. The interior was a dark graphite with burgundy appointments while the exterior was a dark cherry almost wine color. The combined color scheme worked well and gave a regal feel.
    We did notice that it had a hybrid type function that puts the engine in an almost off idle when stopped. My guess is this is to give it that extra 2-4 city mpg. I wouldn't use the Enclave for racing and prefer slower accelerations in these type vehicles so I don't think that's an issue. Knowing that I can accelerate to pass or make a run for it is good enough for me. The one thing performance wise that I'm not sure if I didn't like or just need to adjust to is the steering feedback. It was reactive but felt a bit loose. I had no issue staying straight or holding a line but there was something there I wasn't expecting.overall I was pleased with it but for comparison I want to compare it to the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Infiniti QX80 and the super dated but reliable Lexus GX460. All of those have 3rd rows, but the Enclave Avenir and Palisade are the cheapest.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that it isn't fair to compare the Enclave to the GLC 300 as an apples-to-apples comparison. You're right, they are different classes of vehicles. The point I was trying to make, was that the Enclave is way to expensive. I simply cannot understand why the Enclave is over $40,000.
      Wonderful comment, by the way. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts in so much detail. 👍👍👍

    • @duhdonutman5661
      @duhdonutman5661 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@100RentalCars I will say I'm right there with you in the surprise at the price but I haven't found a reasonable comp that's as well equipped. We actually tested a Palisade limited today, which we liked and priced about the same as the Avenir. They each had their own tradeoffs of course, and clearly show different philosophies. The Enclave is a tried and true formula that had to be upgraded and if you have been driving the same car for the past 5 or so years you'll be pleased. It's a design that won't look dated as it has a conservative approach. The Palisade is Hyundai's 3 attempt to get it right and in my opinion that did. It's an modern look that in time will either be gimmicky if it fails (think Aztec) or a new standard. Unfortunately in either event entry level luxury 3 row with comfortable 2/3 rows are gong to exceed 40k. From the perspective of a 6-2 near 300# the Palisade is surprisingly roomy and has every piece of tech you would want in this class.

    Seems the engine was tuned more for peak power,,,,, which hurts low to midrange torque.... maybe if it was tuned to like 270-290 hp but with much more low-mid torque wich would probably increase MPG.... I can picture the engineers arguing with marketing on this,, Cara with less than 300 hp wont attract buyers in 2020... being that its 2020 everybody wants 30+ mpg on their suv or full size vehicle with full features and 12 airbags, siri and google/alexa assistant.,,, i think Buick should make it more appealing to a younger buyer market, but also remember what makes a good car a good.

      This is not a very ccurate review. I've had my 2019 Enclave Avenir for over a year and it's great, and I am not a GM fan. It has the most power and torque in it's class, the quietest interior, the most passenger and cargo space, the second best turning radius, the highest towing capacity, and has similar gas mileage to others in this class. It is true that it lacks a few luxury features for it's price though and there are some cheap plastic parts, but overall it has exceeded my expectations. The ride is amazing, it has the only selectable AWD system with dual clutches that can direct all the power to only one wheel if needed, and don't worry, it absolutely accelerates very well even when loaded.

    I was a Buick fan for decades, that is, when they made cars that were beautiful and used better materials. Here we are in 2020 and the company is going in reverse. When Kia uses better interior materials and has better designs than Buick??? I can’t respect the brand anymore. The goal was for it to be an “American Lexus”... to me it’s more like an “American Embarrassment”. They simply don’t understand what consumers want, and what they do understand, they refuse to offer for reasons unknown. 🤷🏻‍♂️ They’ve now eliminated all of their sedans. I suspect in the not so distant future, Buick will be rightfully laid to rest.

      Norm T , Yes I know they do. But how can you fill a car full of hard plastics, cheap fabrics, fake wood, a gutless engine and call yourself a luxury brand? Or even a premium brand? Let alone justify this kind of a price tag for it? Buick claims they are competitive with Lexus, Infiniti, Acura. Right now, they’re lucky if they could turn the head of a Ford or Honda buyer. Again, they’re not giving the consumers what they want, high reliability or not. And it’s GM’s fault.
