It's great to hear it's good for the money, but is it good? This review would be more helpful if it gave an idea of the image quality. I love that it's cheap camera lens, but poor image quality will make for an expensive paper weight. Something to think about for future reviews. 🙏

First off, thanks for the comment and reaching out! It is hard to say and is kind of subjective to what "Good" is. Can it create a image and is it on the cheap side. Yes and yes. Is it the best lens ever? Hell no! But in a world where you have people looking for the lowest barrier to entry and have access to a lens that gives them many focal lenghts for a fraction of the price of the crazy expensive lenses on the market. It gets the job done. A paper weight it will never be if you take it out and use it, even if it is every once in a while. Thanks again for the comment! Cheers!

I was able to find a cheap adapter on eBay that screws into the front of the lens. This boosted the lens cap size to 58mm !

I think he meant that he changed the filter thread to 58mm so as to find filters easier than a 40.5mm size. @@KarlWeinreich

I have it too, but on aps-c sensors, you really need low Fs. The thing is, at F5.6, if it's a little dark, there is no way you'll take a good photo or video, it'll all be noisy. Also, that zoom is loud. Indeed, kinda hard to beat for the money, it even has OSS. I find the lens to be good for starters but cheap to take it too seriously, image is a bit too soft.

We agree, there are better lenses. Cool video, tho. This little kit lens is amazing for the price. Just for drill we added this kit lens, plusthe other kit lens(28-70),to a couple of very inexpensive A6000's and used them for outdoor shooting in the Texas desert and Hill country areas. Pic's and video's were absolutely stunning, from flowers with small insects--autofocus rocks!- all the way to far off shots of Pecos river canyons. For a newbie or pro, there's literally one million perfect images inside them thar lenses, just waiting to be taken. Cheers👍

I would say the best lens to get for APS-C would be the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 lens. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1667228-REG/sigma_18_50mm_f_2_8_dg_dn.html
This lens will be a constant f2.8 across the zoom range, give great colors and will be reasonable when it comes to price. Thanks for the comment, Cheers!

I have a Sony a6400 with a 16-50 kit lens and I have a Lumix G90 with the 12-35 2.8. Surely different lenses in terms of cost, but the Sony is used on a 24Mpx apsc that should be better than an M43. Results? At 6400 ISO the noise generated by the sensor with the same exposure parameters is almost identical, but with a noise reduction SW like DxO the chrominance noise is much better with the Lumix. The Sony lens is embarrassing. I tried to focus on the 4 corners of the same subject with 4 shots. With the Sony the corners are all pasty and stretched, unwatchable. With the Lumix they have incredible sharpness. So my thought (experienced), even though I have both, is that the Sony is a glass bottom of very low quality

    • @KarlWeinreich
      @KarlWeinreich  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks for sharing your detailed comparison! You've made some excellent points, especially regarding the lens quality and performance at higher ISOs. The kit lens on the Sony a6400 does have its limitations, particularly in corner sharpness, as you've observed. While the APS-C sensor should theoretically give the Sony an edge, lens quality plays a significant role in overall image quality. The Lumix G90 paired with a higher-end lens like the 12-35mm f/2.8 can definitely outperform the Sony in terms of sharpness and chrominance noise, especially when post-processing tools like DxO come into play.
It's a reminder that the lens is just as important as the sensor when it comes to getting the best results. Your experience really highlights the importance of investing in good glass. Thanks for contributing to the discussion!
      Thanks for the comment, Cheers!

    Thanks for this video!
I am trying to determine on pulling the trigger on the zv-e10 with this kit lens.
It's initial and primary purpose is live streaming in my basement.
It is about 15feet away from the "set"
The set is about 15 feet wide (have vids up on here of it already)
I have two panel lights on the 45* points and two on 6 inch bar lights on the floor.
Do you believe this camera would fit the bill?
I am using an iphone now but it is not super reliable because of software failure points from time to time.
Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you for the content.

    • @KarlWeinreich
      @KarlWeinreich  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I absolutely think the ZV-E10 would be a great camera to get. It will give you a lot of option compared to the Iphone. When it comes to lenses and settings you will have so much more freedom to create. The Iphone is great and can do so much but it is hard to replace a dedicated camera. Thanks for the comment, Cheers!

Hmm... On the one hand, yes this is a good lens. But good for what? Landscape? Not so sure about that. Even at its optimal aperture (which seems to be f8 - f11) it's sharp only in the middle. The edges leave a lot to be desired and the corners add vignetting and chromatic aberrations. For street, especially if you like to use shapes and contrast, it is a very good option. Even better because it is almost a pancake lens and you can be very discrete with it. Portrait? Maybe, but make sure the face, or at least the eyes, are in the sweet spot in the middle. In some cases that will leave too much real estate above the head so cropping may be necessary in post. The softness fully open though - I think some female subjects would appreciate that. Architectural? If the light gives you greater contrast then yes. But I find whatever I use this lens for, I am adding a lot of use of sharpness, clarity, and contrast tools in post. For all these reasons I bought a Sigma 18-50 f2.8. It has great performance across the zoom range, can focus close enough to simulate macro, and is so sharp... As well as the wider aperture giving better low light performance. It's a bargain, but no OSS.
So... I use both. Definitely the Sony kit lens for street - the compact nature, quick autofocus, and OSS make it ideal for that. But you also need to be aware of the limitations. They are easy to work round for street, much harder for all other subject types. I also find the Sony lens good for video, because of the OSS. I almost never need to stabilise in post. The slight softness also gives an old film-type movie effect at times which is nice. Similarly I don't use the Sigma for video because of lack of OSS. But everything else it rocks! Even so, I prefer the stealth of the Sony lens for street.

      Hi @andrisstanga5938,
Thank you for the detailed insight! You’ve raised some excellent points about the strengths and weaknesses of the lens.
      Sony Kit Lens:
Landscape Photography: I agree that it might not be the best choice for landscapes due to edge sharpness and vignetting issues at optimal apertures (f/8 - f/11). These drawbacks can indeed be limiting for capturing wide, detailed scenes.
Street Photography: The compact, almost pancake design, combined with quick autofocus and OSS (Optical SteadyShot), makes it ideal for street photography. Its discreteness is a significant advantage in candid shooting.
Portraits: While the softness when fully open can be flattering for some subjects, especially in portrait photography, ensuring the eyes or face are in the sweet spot is crucial. Cropping in post is often necessary to adjust the composition.
Architectural Photography: As you mentioned, it can work well if the lighting provides good contrast, though it may require a lot of post-processing adjustments for sharpness, clarity, and contrast.
      Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8:
Performance: This lens offers excellent sharpness across the zoom range and a wider aperture for better low-light performance. It’s versatile, with the ability to focus close enough to simulate macro shots, making it a great all-around lens.
No OSS: The lack of Optical SteadyShot is a drawback for video, which is where the Sony kit lens shines due to its stabilization.
      Personal Use:
It's great to hear you use both lenses for their respective strengths. The Sony kit lens excels in street photography and video, thanks to its compactness, quick autofocus, and OSS. The Sigma, on the other hand, offers superior performance for other types of photography, though it lacks stabilization for video work.
      My conclusion:
Each lens has its unique advantages and limitations, making them suitable for different types of photography. It's all about knowing their strengths and working around their limitations.
Thanks again for sharing your experience!

I just bought a used one I just bought a used one pz 16-50mm. I realise that the image always shake when zoom in and out, at a few certain focal lengthes.
Also, I can’t change the speed of zooming by changing the zooming speed number at manual. Can't change the ring function into manual zoom too.
Is this normal to this model, or my lens have problem? This is my zooming test:
