The Story of Conscription

  • By the end of 1915, the number of volunteers for military service was dwindling. In March 1916, after much debate, the UK government changed the law. Outside Ireland, all UK citizens were now soldiers, precluded from call-up only by gender, age, physical fitness or occupation.
Compulsory military service of one form or another continued until 1960.
This video explores the pre-war origins and the story of conscription using objects from the National Army Museum’s collection.

Didn't need to, considering its much smaller investment in the first world war, the only reason it fought was because it was part of the commonwealth. they weren't in immediate danger and so didn't need as many soldiers, they fought wars for Britain, and so usually it was Britain who had to make up for lack of numbers.

Abolish military conscription. Without this atrocity at their disposal, governments will be far less inclined to start or continue wars. If a particular war is truly popular, there will be sufficient true volunteers.

The fact that the state can force a man to give his very life for that state, shows that the state owns us. They still think they own us even now. But they know conscription will do them more harm than good - the last thing they want now is for common working class proles to have weapons training.
Imagine having to give your life for a state, that would have you work down a mine your entire life, for a meagre pittance in return; while they live in luxury without having to lift a finger? and we are to die for them?? So glad I was born in 1986 and not 1886... the difference just 100 years makes/

Take America for instance this place is falling apart into chaos you have all these young veterans. You have a lot of tension in the streets one side's always pitted against the other and this is going to continue to worsen because nothing is really being done about it. I see our society really kind of degrading into what it was during the civil war or the great depression of course always with our new technology. Still though if we are in America right now we are living in a rapidly destabilizing country. So yes I do think it could happen today. Sadly the post war generations born after national service ended are too wrapped up in their personal liberties and priorities. This is a direct result of governments, families and society encouraging people to think only of themselves first, last and always. "What can my country do for me", has far outshadowed, "what can I do for my country". National service would put a strain on the British military that they, heavily understrenght as they are, could not bear. The more so because most of the intake would be very reluctant to surcome to military discipline.

Why should anyone bother serving in the military when the country doesn't even treat them like a proper human being? The US as it is now, is not worth defending with my life, and hasn't been that way since the start of Reagan's first term at the absolute earliest.
If you are forced to serve in the military for a country that doesn't really care if you live or die at home or on the battlefield, how motivated would you be to perform your absolute best? I wouldn't be. In the US schools are underperforming, infrastructure is in dire need of repair, we can't even get clean water to the people of Flint Michigan, and many other cities even, there's a private prison system that relies on the criminal classification of marijuana and all other schedule 1 drugs, the richest country in the world somehow is unable to keep poverty rates low and give everyone health insurance, and on top of that, we have idiots in power giving more and more power to the corporations.
