In my opinion its better to know how to write arabic and familiarise yourself with basic vocab as it helps to understand word formation better. Its easier than you think. Practise writing with a pen or pencil... copying calligraphy is helpful in the start and eventually youll be able to do it on your own. But learn from the bottom and strengthen your basic knowledge so you can become more than awesome...

I can let you know the difference. Traditional calligraphy is having rules and if we apply the rules then it's traditional calligraphy, if we don't apply the rules and make changes in the letters it's called abstract calligraphy or canvas calligraphy.
