    I saw her in the The Second Woman. I thought, still think, she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. There was a quiet dignity about her that was so fetching. She was 1 of those women who wasn't drop-dead beautiful but whose beauty was her inner self.

    With such a beautiful and accomplished wife, then to cheat, it makes you wonder why he even got married to her in the first place. She was quite a catch for the right man. If you know you can't be faithful, why put somebody you love through the pain of it?

      When my late ex was caught cheating with a skank, a friend of his explained it to me like this: "When a man has T-bone steak at home every night, sometimes he wants a hamburger." In other words: some men like cheap meat. It was always so. Always will be.

      Cary Grant had tremendous problems with depression. Tons of sex is a way to fight depression, in the moment. But the long-run cost is great, as Betsy Drake divorced him.

      My father died 3 years ago. He was married 3 times and was a serial cheater. I have asked your question, “ If you know you can't be faithful, why put somebody you love through the pain of it?” many many times without a satisfactory answer. I once was talking with a group of women about this and I said something that got an unexpected reaction. I said that because my father was a serial cheater, and I know the pain that it causes, I had never ever cheated on a woman. I never will because I always want to say that I am a better man than my father was. The women’s reaction was the opposite of what I expected. I thought that they would think that I was immature and needed to get over it but instead they started saying that I was a great catch. Sad, I get credit just because so many men act like A-holes.

    Jeepers, she's certainly the most unusual Hollywood denizen I can think of. Wnat a life! What a sweet and intelligent face for an actress of the time -- and a normal human being suddenly appearing among products of the studio style factory of the era. I'm sorry for her retroactively, but really now -- how can anybody expect anything like a normal domestic life marrying a superstar sex symbol?
    You've taken on a really really hot topic, Cary's LSD use, and beautifully put it into context as only you can. Thank you and bravo!

  • @ozvoyager
    @ozvoyager 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Betsy Drake was only Cary Grant's longest relationship if you disregard Randolph Scott. Grant and Scott were together for at least 12 years. Grant and Drake married in December 1949 and separated in 1958 (though they didn't finally divorce until 62), so they were only married eight years. You also don't have to read between the lines too much to see that the relationship was also pretty much over well before those eight years, given the multiple betrayals (and not just infidelities) and the fact that Drake very obviously sought out other interests well away from Grant. Grant's other marriages to women lasted an average of between two and three years each (the last was longer, but he was so old by then that a divorce would have been a waste of energy). At least one of those marriages was ordered and arranged by the studios to distract from Grant's relationship with Scott. Another (to Barbara Hutton) was widely rumoured to be also a marriage of convenience. Whichever way you crunch it, Grant's longest relationship (and by all accounts the happiest and most passionate) was with Randolph Scott. Ignoring this makes this entire video pure bullshit.

      Randolph's son wasn't there. But various house guests of Grant and Scott were, and several have given their first-hand accounts of the romance - among them actor Richard Blackwell and photographer Jerome Zerbe. There's also the Orry-Kelly memoir that outlines his romance with Grant in New York, pre-Hollywood. And his accounts of Grant getting by as a "gigolo" for wealthy men, which the TV series Archie turned into wealthy women. It's not surprising that Grant's daughter and some of his wives would prefer not to address some of this, but there's way too much reliable evidence to ignore.. @@claudiascott6484

    It's not surprising that he would cheat. It was well known that the place he shared with Randolph Scott had more women coming and going than a train station. They liked the innuendo because it lured women to attempt to "change them". Brilliant way to score a ton of women, if you ask me. Playas gonna play.

    No "helping humanity," especially mentally disturbed children, to take LSD and so escape reality into uncontrollable hallucinations, usually nightmarish. The teenaged daughter of Art Linkletter, host of the tv show "Kids Say the Funniest Things," under the influence of LSD jumped out a window and died.

    • @jeffreyanderson1851
      @jeffreyanderson1851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not all experiences with LSD lead to ruin. Often it can lead to deep personal insights and a more grounded existence. But It can have unpredictable effects, especially with an unstable personality. My experience with it was luckily quite positive. For me, the worst effect was that it took up so much time, 10-12 hrs, which is physically and mentally exhausting and does not lend it to a realistic therapeutic use due to the time involved. I don’t regret my experience with it at all, but I wouldn’t suggest taking it for a fun experience.

    • @Desibeatnik
      @Desibeatnik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not true. On 4 October 1969, at 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning, a 20-year-old girl jumped from her kitchen window. She died in the hospital an hour and a half later from injuries sustained in that fall.
      Two factors elevated this most ordinary of suicides to a news story that immediately caught the nation’s interest and later formed a vital “fact” used to support a popular drug-related urban legend: the girl’s identity and the widespread claim she’d been high on LSD at the time she went out the window.
      The girl was Diane Linkletter, the youngest of beloved television and radio personality and author Art Linkletter’s five children. Due to the sense of identification the public had with her famous father, her death came to symbolize a tragedy that could be visited upon any home at any time. His on-air warmth and innocence made many feel they knew him, and thus his pain became their own.
      Diane’s death helped spread a widespread urban legend that lives on to this day, although it was around well before her fatal plunge. According to a popular story that warns young people about the dangers of drug use, “some girl” jumps from a window while on an acid trip because the drug fools her into thinking she can fly. The claims immediately made after Diane’s death that she had been on LSD, coupled with her method of suicide, seemed to some to fit this existing cautionary tale, and afterwards her demise was pointed to as an example of this legend’s coming true.
      Yet it wasn’t true, although members of her family attempted to blur the line between what had happened to Diane and her use of drugs as a possible cause for it. We can only speculate upon their reasons for doing so, but we should note that it is not all uncommon for those left behind after a suicide to work to convince others the death was one of misadventure and not the deliberate ending of a life. There is still a stigma attached to suicide, and families may view cloaking such matters in more socially acceptable terms as one final act of loyalty they can perform for the one who has gone before. (At one time the stigma was far greater and bore serious consequences that could impact upon the fate of the suicide’s mortal soul. Those who had taken their lives could not be interred in hallowed ground. Families in days past tried to pass off all manner of self-inflicted deaths as accidental, lest their loved ones be refused burial in the churchyard and forfeit any remaining chance of resurrection.)
      Those who are left to grieve sometimes choose to reject evidence of deliberate suicide in favor of the more comforting fiction of accidental death. This act of self-deception serves to cocoon them from a pain too terrible to bear. The untimely death of a young person is always a tragedy, but most can eventually make their peace with it, ultimately chalking it up to a horrible caprice of fate. How much harder it is to attempt to deal with a child’s death by suicide when confronted by questions such as: Was there something I was supposed to notice? Was there something I could have done? If I’d listened a bit harder, could I have prevented this? For some, the only answer is to refuse to acknowledge that there was a suicide, or to adopt a view of events that exaggerates the importance of outside factors upon the final outcome, thus lessening the suicide’s responsibility for his actions. Better to live with “He took drugs, and the drugs made him take his life” than to face “He was horribly unhappy, and there should have been something one of us could have done about this.”
      Whatever the Linkletter family’s motivations, what cannot be denied is they made numerous attempts to convince others that Diane’s death was primarily due to drugs and not attributable to her own state of unhappiness.

      Cary said he didn't have anything against those fellows (Gay men) but he just didn't happen to be one of them. I read his biography and learned about his bachelor life when he and Randolph Scott were dating lots and lots of women and I believe they were sharing a flat and a butler but not their bed! He had a serious passion for Sophia Loren and in doing so he broke the heart of the best wife he ever had. Sophia chose another man and Cary had to live with her rejection plus his guilt for betraying his wife's trust.

    Cheating was a culture in Hollywood. Still is. I suppose it has to do with very attractive and talented people one works closely with. Also, many people simply love being admired and wanted.

    Betsy was BEAUTIFUL! IF only Cary was raised and practice RESPECT FOR WOMEN, her life could have turned out very differently!
    Taking LSD is mind boggling to me, no wonder she ended up crazy allowing a man to destroy her and her life!

      It sounds like she did great after him, graduating from Harvard, helping people, got a fat settlement . . . why would she want to marry again after his foul cheating and probably homosexuality. Single woman are the happiest group -- doing what they want, not a slave or mother to a man.

    Cary said he didn't have anything against those fellows (Gay men) but he just didn't happen to be one of them. I read his biography and learned about his bachelor life when he and Randolph Scott were dating lots and lots of women and I believe they were sharing a place as many bachelors did in those days. Now people desperate to find dirt to put on such a beloved actor have jumped to conclusions.

      How do you know he wasn't bisexual? Nobody knows anyone truly, and especially not old Hollywood starts who were protected. There were a lot of affairs, bed hopping, abortions, spouses cheating, drugs etc. Even the sainted Audrey Hepburn had a relationship with a married man, William Holden. You don't know people, only what they want you to know.

    How wonderful of Betsy to dedicate her life to helping others. A very intelligent, generous, caring woman. Cary Grant was a frightened man obsessed with maintaining the manly facade he had created for himself fearing the true loves of his life, men, would write a tell all book including him and he was an idiotic person for letting this loving woman get away. She loved him more than the other women in his life. Cary Grant didn’t truly love another female until he had his daughter who he adored.
