- These are the most popular webmail providers from 2000 to now. Some of these webmail providers were around in the 90s but under different names, such as Rocketmail, which was purchased and rebranded by Yahoo in 1997.
Others may be unknown in your market, such as QQ and Netease which are popular in China. When Google unveiled Gmail it forced many of the large webmail providers to innovate, such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Microsoft provided Hotmail and Outlook as separate services but eventually Hotmail users were moved over to Outlook service.
The latest numbers come from Wikipedia.

@@marcoyankovich dumb argument. its still in the top ten because there are just no other email providers, aol is so small already but the 11th biggest email provider has only 10% of the amount of aol users.
What actually surprised me was that the number of AOL users began growing again after 2010, in the wake of the Yahoo! security breach.
@@stevevasta that doesnt really surprise me honestly, i remember back then i wasnt really that much into internet yet but my parents used it a lot and made my grandparents account there as well etc.
i think it needed gmail to become so mandatory on android phones that made all other providers die out, because eventually even the older generation has to adapt there
Hotmail was actually an Indian standalone email service before MS bought it and now it is known as Outlook

It’s actually rather terrifying that Yahoo still retain so many. More than iCloud even. I use iCloud cause it’s built into my mail client and why use a third party service when I already have an active email by default. I think the mass domination of Android devices is also one of the largest contributing factors to Gmail’s dominance.
Gmail went viral because it was offering more storage then other email providers. For eg: Gmail was offering 1 GB of storage than Yahoo which was only 4 megabytes
And because it was viewed as an exclusive club of sorts at first. When I got it, it was invite only and the coolest thing I was known for in high school was having a limited amount of Gmail invites. 😂 I happened to get my invite from an online friend who worked for google at the time.
But now yahoo offers 1 Terabyte storage, while Gmail just 15gb

well as i know google has been around since 90`s. what give them a boost is the smart phones with android from 2008-2009 they got rocketed to the sky with them. i used google since about 2003 but they got the biggest popularity with android.

Thank god I was able to create my gmail account on the end of October 2004. Imaging creating something unique now. That's at least one worry the son of Elon Musk does not have.

To make it a little bit more clear-yandex.mail and почта mail.ru are both Russian email services,really popular in Russia and nearest post-soviet countries

I still have and use the Yahoo email account I opened as a college freshman in 2001. I also have a much newer gmail account, but I hardly ever use it, except as a means to access TH-cam.

The most surprising thing - AOL holds steady at about 25,000,000 accounts. Every time I'm reminded of AOL I'm surprised it still exists.

I think I've had a couple of dozen Googlemail accounts myself over the last decade. Methinks those numbers are probably abit misleading. I don't use any of them as my 'actual' email address. The service I use appears no where in this list lol

I've had my Gmail since invites were selling for $50 on eBay. Someone on a forum I frequented made a post saying the first two or three to pm got one. I'm still using it.. simplest email ever, just my first two initials and last name. No numbers or shit. The big deal was that they were 1gb back then! This was around 2003 or 4.
I didn't realize it took Gmail that long to become popular. Seems like everyone was signing up in 2004. This must either not include inactive accounts or only consider primary email providers.
I remember receiving my invite to sign up for Gmail as it used to be invite only and not public, being over the moon when I was actually invited to join. Still use the same account today. It really is the best free email account provider.
Although towards the end of the Video I am surprised to see that Yahoo mail isnt there, as I also have an email thats still active that uses Yahoo mail servers, and I know that over 25 million people have had sky/still using sky in the UK so even if 2% of those numbers had sky email, (and I know the number is much higher) thats 250,000 which is way higher than 'Lycos Mail' 200,000 users at the end of the vid, so it should show either Yahoo or Sky with those numbers!!!

I'm just appalled at how a significant proportion allow monopolies of everything tech-wise.
To this day my main email is still hotmail
One thing to wonder is how many of those are 'phantom' accounts. For instance, I technically had a Yahoo email account but I never checked it even once. (I was on eGroups and the Yahoo purchase resulted in everyone ending up with a Yahoo account.)

A lot of people have Gmail accounts just because of Android and other Google apps but don't use it as their main email account. I prefer Outlook/Hotmail but if that went away Gmail would be okay.

Our host makes the number freeze when a service is shut down. That way, in order for a new service to outrank it, it has to exceed that closing number.

Tbh I don't think outlook actually has that many users, my entire school system uses outlook and every single student automatically gets an account wheter they use it or not.
This video is data on monthly active users, not total accounts on the platform. A lot of large organizations use outlook, and they do have a lot of monthly active users

I've had a hotmail account since September 1997, just before it was bought by Microsoft. My Gmail goes back to the start, when it was by invitation only.
