I knew about ricin long before 'Breaking Bad'. It's a really nasty substance for short and long range chemical warfare. No immediate effect, just huge deterioration of people exposed in a few days.
There's an episode of the original CSI where Peterson is investigating a murder using Ricin-D Nitrogen (the proper chemical name of the toxic component) and speculates that the perpetrator "cooked up" some in her kitchen before the crime. That was a nice bit of misdirection since applying heat to the molecule destroys it, which is why the pulp of the castor bean is steamed after the oil is extracted. I loved the smell of real Castrol brand castor oil in my 1972 Kawasaki 350 triple, which had a separate tank for the two-stroke oil automatically mixed into the fuel before combustion. I don't even think they sell that anymore.
Just some corrections to the video: 1. Obviously, ricin isn't the only toxic protein. Many venoms are protein-based too, so there are many toxic proteins we would want to avoid. 2. Ricin is hydrophilic, not hydrophobic. If it's hydrophobic, it would be able to dissolve in oil.
I wonder if we could use the B-Toxin as a drug delivery method to get medicine inside cells. Perhaps we could make it so a modified version of the A-Toxin is able to be disabled by healthy cells, but not cancerous ones. Also, perhaps we could find a human-specific enzyme and modify toxin A to bind to that enzyme and disable its toxicity, allowing the toxin complex to act as a universal antibiotic/fungicide allowing a cure for nearly all non-virulant infections.
@@mymobilebuddy4392 That (the book "BITTER HARVEST" by Ann Rule) was how I initially learned of Ricin. Though the husband did survive, I think one or two of their children did die in a fire she started.
Castor oil is also used as a plaster mold release agent. You can buy it at home improvement or arts and crafts stores. It has been deactivated. In the US, castor oil laxatives are hardly ever used or available any more. When I was a kid, a common brand was Fletcher's Castoria.
Benito Mussolini used castor oil to torture his political prisoners, they were force fed the oil and left chained. The results were that the victims died from diarrhea and dehydration. No need for a special poison.
As a child my mom would administer a spoon full of castor oil to relieve symptoms of constipation. It was vile and disgusting tasting. I later ran in to it as a lubricant for tiny (radio controlled) airplane engines. Just the smell of that oil was enough to bring back unpleasant memories of its taste. It was really interesting how you explained the biological hitchhiking of the two proteins to gain entry in to a cell.
If ricin is "hydrophobic" it is "water fearing" and thus should be quite soluble in the castor oil. If, on the other hand , ricin is "hydrophilic"" or "water loving" it would be soluble in water and thus not be present in the castor oil.
The Communists eventually copied the Fascists and both sides used it: although the Fascists gained the upper hand and controlled the country for a long time, after the war the Communists had some popularity in Italy. See the Don Camillo stories by Guareschi, set mostly in the Po Valley of postwar Italy. Both people who missed some aspects of the Fascist days, and the Communists, copying the tactic, would send a group of men to force an opponent to drink a big dose of castor oil, with unpleasant consequences. Fortunately, castor oil isn’t toxic. I don’t think I’ve consumed any unless it’s a minor ingredient in something popular.
Had atleast 3 cases in my country where people made it. One case it might have been suicide the other 2 was probobly curiousity/terror. But no innocent was killed in any of those 3 cases.
There are many proteins in plants that are toxic, but they are mildly toxic, you would have to eat a lot to have maybe a stomach ache or diarrhea. Just point out that it's not only one protein you better avoid. One example is lectin, a toxic substance found in many plants, many that we eat, but cooking the plant decrease its toxicity by a lot.
Alright, I've said similar stuff in your comments before, but I think it's time for round two. Are we seriously at a point in which you have the sensor the words 'weapon' and 'assassination'? Un-fucking-believable.

At 7:26 I think it's meant "hydrophilic". Because then it makes sense, that it doesn't dissolve in oil
Similarly you can also say "lipophobic". This way it exactly means, that it can't bind to oil
