    What makes this song so poignant is that in 1977 there were no cell phones, no texting, no messages and many people didn't even have home answering machines, I know I didn't have have one until 1989. Nothing is as lonely as calling a number of someone you're missing and listening to it ring and ring. This song always hits me in the heart.

      You nailed it. Kids today have no idea what it meant to be so out of touch when your heart was breaking and there was only a ringtone. Awesome that the song still holds up even though the kids can't really relate. The genius of Jeff.

      @@robotto8858 This will age me, but I can remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of wine, broken heart, using my princess phone with the extra long cord, calling over and over and 'noone answering, I'll just let it ring a little longer...."

    Geoff Lynn is a contemporary of the Beatles and knew them when he was in The Move in the 60’s. He was also a close personal friend of George Harrison and played with him on the Travelling Wilburys

    • @lhpl
      @lhpl 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fun trivia: when Jeff's first single was released in 1967, a sad (but also a bit funny in retrospect) thing happened. This is the story as quoted by the Jeff Lynne Song Database:
      "So in the Idle Race, we finally got a record deal. So I wrote this song called Imposters of Life's Magazine. And I can't wait for this thing to arrive in the mail, this record that I've made. And it's going to have me name on the label. I'm going, 'Oh, I'm going to be a songwriter.' The thing comes and I look at it and I go, 'What the hell is that!?' And it says 'Imposters of Life's Magazine by G. Lynn,' without the e on the end, just l-y-n-n And 'G.'? I thought, 'who's that? Gordon?' You know, I don't know any G. Lynn around here. So I was very, very disappointed, very upset 'cause it was really me big moment and it just turned to shit. [Laughs]"
      Jeff Lynne (Summer 2012 - Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO documentary)
      So I think Jeff would be just slightly miffed about being called "Geoff"... ;-)

    • @lhpl
      @lhpl 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh, btw Jeff joined the Move in 1970, so barely in the 1960es... (but you must know that already? ;-) )
      Before that, he was in the Andicaps (the name changed a few times) which he formed with some friends in 1963 (!), and then went to the Chads, and in 66 he joined the Nightriders, which then became the Idle Race.
      His career thus started a lot earlier than many people seem to think.

    When you wanted to call long distance you dialed 0 and asked an operator to dial the number. The intro tones replicate what you would hear when she dialed. You would start paying as soon as the other party picked up so there was a limit to the # of times she let it ring. Always such a tense time hoping they pick up

    Someone once asked George Harrison what he thought the Beatles would have sounded like if they'd stayed together through the 70'S and into the 80's. He said ELO. George and Jeff Lynn were good friends. They were in the band The Traveling Wilburies together.

    I've been a die-hard Electric Light Orchestra fan since I first heard them in the mid 70's. Yet, I don't understand why this track gets all of the attention. It's a great track, but it's not the only one...not by a long shot. I think too many of these requests are made by people who've only heard one or two songs on the radio.

    You should watch them do this live as they sound as good live (if not better) asthey do in the studio version. You get to see the audience in the concert all up singing and dancing. All of their songs are great and my favourite is 'All Over The World' which is such a happy song. Jeff Lynne (who is from my home City of Birmingham, UK) was a fantastic musician and producer.

    This is the song that made me fall in love with ELO as a kid in the 1970's. Pure magic! My other favorite is "Can't Get It Out Of My Head". Personally, I say listen to the studio version every time with ELO. As good as some of the live clips are that people recommend, they simply cannot duplicate some of the things that made these songs so special.

    So I spent probably from the late 70’s through 99 going to approximately 12 or 13 concerts a year with my buddies all over the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut (and Massachusetts) areas. Then I moved to Nashville and have worked in the music industry for 25 years now. I’ve been to more shows pretty much than anybody I know (that doesn’t work in the industry).
    That said, bucket list has always had ELO on it, and about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I finally got to see Jeff Lynn’s ELO.
    I’m here to say, 2 songs in and my mind was made up. They were instantly in my Top 3 shows Ever!
    “Telephone Line” was one of my favorite parts of the show, but there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the show! Best audio ever.

    The song is about re-connecting with a lost love. Hello, How are you? Are you still the same? He misses the love they shared and he's hoping she will pick up the phone and reciprocate his longing. He's stuck in twilight. If you would only pick-up that telephone. Of course, she doesn't pick up. His only choice is to let it ring evermore meaning he will never give up trying to reconnect. It's a masterpiece. For those of us that grew up with that ring and that anticipation of connecting, it's simply amazing.

Add in the laser show and awesome sound mix, made it an unbelievable show! There are tons of videos here on youtube, watch one song if not the whole show! You'll see what I mean. This was a bucket list show for me, I live in Akron, Ohio and missed them in Cleveland. Found next closest show and drove to Detroit to see it, best decision ever! You really should do the combo of El Dorado (overture) and Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. Just don’t do the supposed live video. It’s not and they cut the overture short. Trust me on this, do the studio and make sure you do them right into each other. It’s not that much longer doing them both, but well worth it. I promise you’ll love it. Jeff is a huge Beatles fan so a lot of their songs give that vibe. They have so many great tunes you’ll get into since you opened this rabbit hole. Jeff definitely used the studio as an instrument.

    I will never forget the first time I heard it because it was in a car in Virginia Beach, Virginia and my brother begged my mom. “No no don’t change it. You don’t understand!”
    Then we did

    Everything Jeff Lynne Touched Is Gold He Produced Albums For George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Steve Winwood in Addition To All ELO Albums. He Is Often Referred to As the 5th Beatle

    Jeff Lynne is/was personal friend of The Beatles & his admiration/influence of them is very apparent in ELO's music

    Great stuff to review - ELO has some of my favorites. 2 other great tracks on this album are 'Mission' and 'Tightrope'.

    They are amazing aren't they? Jeff Lynne doesn't get nearly the accolades he deserves. The way they can perfectly replicate this sound live too, is crazy, well you've seen them at Wembley. You gotta check out 'Don't Bring Me Down', if you don't already know it, talk about bangers. Thanks for this, just what I needed. ✌❤
