At least all of the people you mentioned great potential, track records and accolades, especially Wright. His potential was worth the gamble of 4 mil over 25 yrs. Darko had length and a great 40 time. People licked their chops and mortgaged the future of a franchise. MLB is a different animal which is why there are 20 rounds in the draft.

Then Millen's son went off & said "Great.. The Buffon just picked another WR, thats what everybody is gonna be talking about!" He was totally right!! Bad memories

Sharpe was a reach, but so was Dennis Rodman, whose asthma was so bad before the draft no one who saw him at the Portsmouth Invitational thought he was any good. The Pistons saw enough in him to get him treated and it paid off like crazy, so I don't fault a similar calculated risk.
If you think the Pistons would have won a championship with Carmelo Anthony, you just don't understand basketball. They would have had to reconstruct the entire team around him. They won a championship his rookie year. They went to game 7 of the finals the next year. Melo was a soft, pouty drama queen who would have been benched by Larry Brown. The going the work guys would not have liked him on that team. I'll take the championship memories over misguided "what-if" scenarios.
