Drukpa Kunley’s strange, eccentric and/or mad ways have nothing to do with realization or his realized state. That was simply his own way and manner of being as a human being. He liked to be that way and he chose that way, but those eccentric and highly irregular ways were not a product of his realization, but because he was a realized person he expressed his realization honestly and in consonance with his own unique character and personality. And even though Drukpa Kunley was an awakened or realized person that doesn’t mean he was a flawless or perfect human being. Many of the things he did had no relation to spirituality or realization. Sometimes he just really liked to drink, get drunk and have sex with as many woman as he was able to. Yes he was awakened and realized but that doesn’t mean that he was emotionally, ethically and spiritually mature or perfect in his realizations, character and personality. Many things he did were expressions of his realized or awakened state; but many things he did were expressions of basic human lust and libido. Being realized doesn’t instantly make a person saintly or godly. The person has to deepen his realization, become more rooted, settled and grounded in his realization and mature in his realization. Realization is not a static event but a continual process. Everything that Drukpa Kunley said and did was not spiritual nor was it an expression of his realized state. Moral flaws, human character defects and raw desires and passions do not instantly disappear when one awakens or becomes realized; but the process leading to the sublimation of those passions, desires, human flaws and character defects is active. The realized person must continue to deliberately and intentionally cooperate with the current, power and intelligence of realization that has awakened or appeared in him. Awakening or realization is like light moving through a prism. The prism may be symmetrical, clear and not cracked or it may be a prism that is asymmetrical, with cloudy spots and cracked. The light coming through both kinds of prism is true light, is identical light, but how that spectrum of color seen coming through the prism is seen will be affected directly by the state and condition of the prism. A distorted light is light; but it is best to receive light that is not distorted. The light of Drukpa Kunley was a distorted light. Once in a while the true and undistorted light revealed itself through him. The prism of Drukpa Kunley’s life never reached a complete state of symmetry, clarity, or harmony, or balance, or integral health. Much of what he said and did had less to do with realization and more to do with the desires of his loins and his personal addictions to vices, and even perversions. We must be sober, vigilant and discerning when dealing with the teachings and examples of realized beings. A realized being is still a human being who side by side with his authentic realizations has strengths and weaknesses side-by-side; some aspects of their being and life are mature and some are not.
